Chapter 16 - No Way Back

Police locked down the county.
Federal agents joined the search.
Marcus gave them everything.
This time he hid nothing.
No secret messages.
No private plan.
No attempt to take control.
Daniel noticed.
“You’re listening.”
“I learned too late.”
“Not too late.”
Marcus looked toward Mia.
“We don’t know that yet.”
Serena arrived under escort after Marcus told investigators about Grant’s demand.
When she heard Lucas had been taken, her face went white.
“He wants me there?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“You know him better than I do.”
Serena shook her head.
“No. I knew the version who always had an exit.”
“Now he doesn’t.”
That was the danger.
Grant had lost Vincent.
Lost Serena.
Lost control of the evidence.
The Northstar deal could not protect him if he was indicted.
A desperate man with nothing left to preserve except himself was unpredictable.
At 6:10 a.m., Grant sent a live video.
Lucas sat inside the old shipyard office.
His hands were not tied.
He appeared physically unharmed.
Grant stood behind him.
“Say hello.”
Lucas stared at the camera.
“Dad, don’t do what he says.”
Marcus’s chest tightened.
Grant smiled.
“Your son inherited the stubbornness.”
“Let him go.”
“Bring Serena at noon.”
“For what?”
“I want her archive password.”
“You already know the evidence exists.”
“I want every copy.”
Serena leaned toward the phone.
“Grant.”
His expression changed.
“Hello, Serena.”
“You took a child.”
“You hit one.”
She went pale.
Grant continued.
“Neither of us gets to pretend now.”
“What do you want?”
“The archive. The original access keys. And written confirmation that you’ll support the Northstar sale.”
Marcus interrupted.
“That deal is dead.”
Grant laughed.
“No. That deal is worth more than your morality.”
Then Lucas spoke.
“Dad.”
Marcus focused.
Lucas looked toward the camera.
“Red door.”
Grant frowned.
Marcus understood immediately.
Lucas was giving him a clue.
Behind Lucas was a rusted fire door painted dark red.
The old shipyard had three such doors.
Only one led to the eastern fabrication bay.
Daniel heard it too.
He silently pointed to a site map.
East bay.
Marcus kept Grant talking.
“You hurt Rosa.”
“Rosa should have stayed out of it.”
“You stole from Mia.”
“That money was temporary.”
“You used Anna.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Anna was going to destroy the company.”
“No. She was going to expose you.”
“Same thing.”
There it was.
Grant believed the company and himself were inseparable.
Marcus recognized the sickness.
He had carried a milder version for years.
“You think Vale Maritime is yours.”
Grant smiled.
“It should have been.”
The real motive surfaced.
“I built it with you,” Grant said. “Then every newspaper called you a genius. Every deal put your name on the building. I moved the money, kept lenders calm, cleaned up disasters. You got the myth.”
“You owned seventeen percent.”
“I wanted half.”
“So you stole it.”
“I corrected the imbalance.”
Serena closed her eyes.
Grant looked at her through the screen.
“And you understood that better than anyone.”
She whispered, “Until you stole from my daughter.”
Grant laughed.
“You stole from his son.”
Serena had no answer.
The call ended.
Agents planned entry through the east fabrication bay.
Marcus and Serena would approach openly at noon while tactical teams moved behind the building.
Serena asked Marcus, “Do you trust them?”
“Yes.”
“You used to trust Grant.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I also used to trust myself too much.”
At 11:48, they arrived.
The abandoned shipyard stood beneath a gray sky.
Rust streaked its metal walls.
This was where Marcus and Grant had built their first prototype twenty years earlier.
Marcus could almost see them at twenty-three.
Hungry.
Exhausted.
Certain success would solve everything.
Grant emerged on an upper catwalk with Lucas beside him.
He held a pistol low at his side.
Serena whispered, “God.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“I’m here.”
Grant smiled.
“Welcome home.”
The words were deliberate.
This had been their first home.
Before money.
Before marriage.
Before betrayal.
Serena lifted a laptop.
“The archive is here.”
Grant gestured toward the stairs.
“Come up.”
Marcus said, “Release Lucas first.”
“No.”
“Then you get nothing.”
Grant raised the gun slightly.
Marcus’s body went rigid.
Lucas shouted, “Dad, don’t!”
Grant snapped, “Quiet.”
Lucas stared at him.
“No.”
The same word he had used against Serena.
You’re not getting near her.
Marcus saw his son shaking.
And still refusing.
Grant grabbed Lucas’s shoulder.
Marcus moved forward.
Serena caught his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
For once, she was the one stopping him from acting blindly.
She called up, “Grant, you want the password?”
“Yes.”
“You remember the account we opened in Geneva?”
Grant frowned.
Serena smiled.
“There was never one account.”
Grant’s confidence vanished.
Marcus understood.
She was provoking him.
Keeping his attention away from the tactical team moving behind the east wall.
Grant shouted, “What did you do?”
“I kept insurance.”
“Give me the password!”
“Let Lucas come down.”
Grant dragged the boy closer.
Then the red fire door behind him moved.
Barely.
An agent was there.
Grant saw the reflection in a broken window.
Everything happened at once.
He pulled Lucas toward him.
Marcus ran.
Serena screamed.
Agents shouted commands.
Grant fired once into the ceiling.
Lucas dropped to the floor.
An agent tackled Grant against the railing.
The pistol fell.
Marcus reached Lucas.
He wrapped both arms around him.
“Dad.”
“I’ve got you.”
Lucas was sobbing.
Marcus held him tighter.
Across the catwalk, Grant struggled in handcuffs.
He looked at Marcus.
“This company exists because of me!”
Marcus stood, keeping Lucas behind him.
“No.”
Grant laughed wildly.
“You still think it’s yours?”
Marcus looked around the decaying shipyard.
Then at his son.
“No.”
For the first time, the answer felt true.
Grant was taken away.
Serena stood several feet from Lucas.
She did not approach him.
Lucas stared at her.
“You told him where we were?”
Her face collapsed.
“No.”
“You helped him before.”
“Yes.”
Lucas looked away.
Serena whispered, “I’m sorry.”
He did not answer.
Marcus did not ask him to.
The final confrontation had happened physically.
But legally, financially, and emotionally, the reckoning was only beginning.
As agents searched Grant, they found a flash drive in his coat.
Daniel examined the label.
NORTHSTAR — FINAL.
Inside was a document showing something nobody expected.
Northstar’s proposed purchase price had been secretly reduced by $140 million.
The difference was to be diverted through advisory fees and side agreements.
Recipients included Grant.
Vincent.
And one undisclosed beneficial owner.
Initials:
S.V.
Marcus looked at Serena.
She stared at the document.
“That isn’t me.”
After everything, nobody in the room immediately believed her.
May you like
And Serena understood exactly how that felt.
