Chapter 8 - The Price of Looking Guilty

By morning, Adrian’s mistake was everywhere.

BILLIONAIRE OFFERED $2 MILLION TO WOMAN CLAIMING FAMILY STOLE COMPANY

COLE MERIDIAN BOARD QUESTIONS CEO’S CONTACT WITH POTENTIAL WITNESS

The stock fell eleven percent before lunch.

Adrian watched the ticker from his office.

Miriam Shaw entered without knocking.

“You’re temporarily recused from anything involving Rosa’s claim.”

“I expected that.”

“And from management of the Stonebridge review.”

He turned.

“I did not expect that.”

“Vanessa alleges you are attempting to sabotage the sale because of a personal conflict.”

“Vanessa has a conflict involving her father and brother.”

“Which is why she is also recused from the special committee.”

“She still runs strategy.”

“For now.”

Adrian looked out at Manhattan.

“How many board members support her?”

“Enough that you should stop assuming your surname wins every vote.”

He almost smiled.

“Fair.”

Miriam softened.

“Adrian, you need to understand what your payment did.”

“I do.”

“No. Rosa trusted you because you knelt beside her without treating her like a transaction.”

He looked at her.

“Then you turned her into one.”

That stayed with him.

Across the city, Rosa sat at Lena Ortiz’s office while photographers waited outside.

Javier paced.

“This is exactly what I said would happen.”

Rosa remained quiet.

“They use you,” he continued. “First Victor. Now Adrian.”

“He apologized.”

“Oh, good. Billionaire apology. We can pay Con Edison with it.”

“Javier.”

“You are seventy-three years old and collecting cans.”

Rosa’s eyes hardened.

“You think I do not know my age?”

“I think this obsession destroyed your life.”

“It was your father’s life too.”

“My father has been dead thirty-four years!”

Silence.

Javier immediately regretted it.

Rosa stood.

“Then go.”

“Mom—”

“Go.”

He left.

This time, the door closed quietly.

Lena waited.

“You don’t have to keep fighting.”

Rosa looked at the window.

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I taught my son that powerful men can take something if the victim gets tired.”

She turned.

“I do not want my grandchildren learning the same thing.”

That evening, Rosa returned home with Marcus following at a distance at Adrian’s request.

The apartment door was already open.

Rosa stopped.

Marcus moved in front of her.

“Stay here.”

He entered.

Two minutes later he returned.

“Call the police.”

Nothing expensive had been stolen.

There was almost nothing expensive to steal.

The television remained.

Rosa’s small jewelry box remained.

Cash in a kitchen jar remained.

But the bedroom closet had been emptied onto the floor.

A metal box lay open.

Old letters were gone.

Photographs were scattered.

Rosa’s face went white.

“My Elena letters.”

Marcus called Adrian.

Adrian arrived forty minutes later but stopped outside when Lena told him not to enter the crime scene.

Rosa sat in a neighbor’s apartment.

When Adrian saw her, he stayed near the doorway.

“Can I come in?”

She nodded.

He sat across from her.

“I’m sorry about the money.”

Rosa stared at him.

“I know.”

“I wasn’t trying to buy you.”

“I know that too.”

“That doesn’t make it better.”

“No.”

Adrian accepted the answer.

“The originals are safe with Celeste.”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone besides us know some letters remained here?”

Rosa thought.

“You.”

Adrian nodded.

“Lena.”

“Yes.”

“Celeste.”

“Yes.”

“Marcus?”

“He saw the box yesterday.”

Rosa suddenly remembered.

“And your lawyer.”

“Which lawyer?”

“The gray-haired man.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Malcolm?”

“He came when we left the bank.”

Adrian remembered.

Malcolm had insisted on documenting that Cole Meridian did not take possession of Rosa’s evidence.

While they spoke, Adrian had mentioned that remaining correspondence was still at Rosa’s apartment.

Careless.

Again.

His mistake.

Rosa read his face.

“What?”

“I told Malcolm there were letters here.”

“You trust him?”

“I did.”

Rosa gave him a tired look.

“That sentence is becoming expensive.”

Detectives later confirmed there had been no forced entry.

Someone had used a key or had the lock professionally opened.

The building superintendent swore he had not provided access.

At 11:15 p.m., Adrian received an encrypted message from an unfamiliar number.

I can prove Vanessa ordered the Alvarez digital files deleted.

Do not reply from your company phone.

Come alone tomorrow.

Attached was a photograph of a server audit log.

At the bottom was a name Adrian recognized.

MAYA CHEN.

Director of Compliance.

He had met her maybe four times.

Adrian showed Marcus.

“You’re not going alone.”

“She specifically said—”

“I don’t care.”

Adrian stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

She knows someone is talking.

Malcolm is helping her.

May you like

And then:

If you want to know why the Alvarez boxes disappeared, stop trusting your own legal department.
