Chapter 5 - The Money Beneath the Family Name

By noon, Leonard’s private legal team had pulled the original trust records.

Or what were supposed to be the originals.

Margaret Vale had created the trust in 1994.

Its primary asset was an eighteen-percent voting interest in Vale Holdings, the private company controlling Vale Timepieces.

Beneficiary: Eleanor Margaret Vale.

Trustee: First Hudson Fiduciary Services.

On October fourteenth, 2000, Eleanor had supposedly executed an assignment transferring her interest into Vale Family Holdings, an entity jointly controlled at the time by Leonard and Malcolm.

Three days later she vanished.

Arthur stared at the signature.

“That isn’t hers.”

Leonard looked at him.

“You’re certain?”

“I watched Eleanor sign service sheets for eight years. Her capital E always leaned left.”

The document’s E leaned right.

Naomi said, “We need a forensic document examiner.”

Martin Shaw agreed.

Leonard said nothing.

The eighteen-percent interest had later been redistributed.

Eleven percent had gone to Leonard.

Seven percent had ultimately become part of a trust established for Chloe.

Arthur looked at the ownership chart.

“There.”

Chloe currently controlled seven percent of the company because of an instrument originating from Eleanor’s allegedly voluntary transfer.

Leonard whispered, “Malcolm gave it to her on her twenty-first birthday.”

Arthur looked at him.

“With Eleanor’s shares.”

Leonard stood so abruptly his coffee spilled.

At that moment Naomi’s phone rang.

She listened.

“Send her up.”

Chloe entered fifteen minutes later with Celeste Grant.

This time she did not pretend nothing was wrong.

She placed a folder on the table.

“I am formally requesting that all company resources stop being used for Leonard’s personal investigation.”

Leonard stared at her.

“My daughter’s forged share assignment is a company matter.”

“Allegedly forged.”

Arthur pushed the ownership chart toward her.

“Did you know where your seven percent came from?”

Chloe didn’t touch it.

“My father created my trust.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Celeste interrupted.

“Arthur, you are not an attorney or investigator.”

“No. I’m the repairman your client tried to humiliate yesterday.”

Chloe’s jaw tightened.

Arthur continued.

“And I’m the man her father threatened.”

Chloe looked at Leonard.

“You are trusting him because you’re desperate to rewrite the past.”

Leonard’s expression darkened.

“What past?”

“The one where Eleanor stole from you and ran.”

Arthur saw something behind Chloe’s anger.

Not certainty.

Need.

She needed Leonard to keep believing the old story.

Leonard noticed too.

“Why does her guilt matter so much to you?”

“It doesn’t.”

“Then help me prove the truth.”

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“You think I don’t know what happens if that assignment is invalidated?”

Leonard said nothing.

“My voting stake disappears. Every distribution made through my trust becomes subject to litigation. Every board vote where my shares mattered gets challenged.”

“There it is,” Arthur said.

Chloe turned.

“There what is?”

“The fear.”

Celeste touched her shoulder.

Chloe ignored her.

“My entire life was built around this company.”

Arthur’s voice was quiet.

“So was Eleanor’s.”

The room went silent.

Chloe’s eyes flashed.

Then she did something unexpected.

She sat.

“My father told me Eleanor hated the family.”

Leonard frowned.

“When?”

“After she disappeared.”

“You were eighteen.”

“He said she stole because she wanted independence.”

“That makes no sense.”

“I know that now.”

Arthur watched her carefully.

“How much did you know when you found the watch?”

Chloe looked down at her hands.

“Enough to know my father lied about never seeing Eleanor that night.”

Leonard’s breathing changed.

“What?”

“In his safe there was a note.”

“What note?”

“Eleanor’s.”

Arthur stepped closer.

“What did it say?”

Chloe’s eyes filled, but she refused to cry.

“She wrote, ‘You can take the shares. I want my mother safe.’”

Leonard gripped the table.

“Where is that note?”

“I burned it.”

No one moved.

Leonard’s voice became almost inaudible.

“You destroyed a letter from my daughter.”

“I panicked.”

“You burned it.”

“My father was dead. I had just inherited his estate. If Eleanor had been coerced—”

“Your shares were stolen.”

Chloe stood.

“I was twenty-one when he gave them to me! I didn’t steal anything!”

“No,” Leonard said. “But thirteen years ago, when you found that letter, you knew.”

Chloe’s face collapsed for one second.

Then rebuilt itself.

“I knew there were questions.”

“And you chose your money.”

“Don’t simplify it.”

“What should I call it?”

“My entire identity was Vale! My career, my home, my trust, everything!”

Arthur stared at her.

“And Eleanor’s identity?”

Chloe turned on him.

“You don’t get to judge me. You took Malcolm’s money.”

The blow landed.

Arthur said nothing.

Chloe saw it and kept going.

“You had twenty-six years to tell Leonard the truth. You didn’t. So don’t sit there pretending you’re brave because you finally found your conscience at sixty-six.”

Arthur’s face burned.

She was right about enough of it to hurt.

Leonard looked between them.

Then Chloe opened her handbag.

She removed a check.

Two million dollars.

She slid it toward Arthur.

Celeste’s face changed.

“Chloe.”

“What is that?” Arthur asked.

“A settlement.”

“For what?”

“Your emotional distress. Your damaged reputation. Whatever story you want.”

Arthur stared.

“In exchange for?”

“You state publicly that after twenty-six years your memory is unreliable.”

Leonard slowly stood.

Celeste whispered, “Withdraw the offer.”

Chloe did not.

Arthur picked up the check.

For a second, Chloe believed he might accept it.

Then Arthur tore it in half.

And half again.

And once more.

He dropped the pieces on the table.

“I made that mistake once.”

Chloe stared at him.

“I won’t make it twice.”

Her phone vibrated.

She checked the screen.

A message preview appeared before she could hide it.

BOARD COUNSEL: We have enough votes.

Arthur saw Leonard read it too.

Chloe slipped the phone away.

Leonard asked, “Enough votes for what?”

Chloe looked at her uncle.

Something cold returned to her face.

May you like

“To protect this company from you.”

And before sunset, Leonard Vale discovered that Chloe had begun the process of removing him from control of the business carrying his own name.
