Chapter 14 - The Men Who Thought They Controlled Everything

Margaret walked toward the documents.

Adrian kept the pistol pointed at Isabel.

Wynn uncapped a pen.

“Sign here. Here. Initial page seventeen.”

Margaret read.

“These documents transfer Noah’s voting shares to a Bermuda holding company.”

“Temporarily,” Wynn said.

“No.”

Adrian raised the pistol toward Noah.

Margaret picked up the pen.

Isabel forced herself not to move.

“Adrian,” she said, “Wynn is using you.”

“Be quiet.”

“He helped Northstar build the side agreements.”

“I know.”

“Do you know he kept copies?”

Wynn looked sharply at her.

Isabel lied.

“We found them.”

Adrian’s eyes shifted.

Wynn said, “She’s stalling.”

“Northstar paid him one-point-eight million dollars,” Isabel continued.

“I know that too.”

“Did you know six hundred thousand came two days after Daniel died?”

This time Adrian looked at Wynn.

Wynn’s jaw tightened.

“Crisis work.”

Adrian said, “You told me Northstar paid eighty.”

Wynn went still.

There.

A secret.

Isabel pushed.

“He lied to you.”

Wynn snapped, “Adrian, focus.”

Margaret put down the pen.

Adrian shouted, “Sign!”

She looked at him.

“No.”

His face contorted.

“Do you want Noah to die?”

“No.”

“Then sign.”

“You already killed one son.”

Adrian recoiled as if struck.

Margaret continued.

“I will not help you turn his child into money.”

Adrian pointed the gun at Noah.

Isabel stepped forward.

“Shoot me.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian stared.

“Isabel.”

“You want leverage? Use me.”

“Stop.”

“Noah’s seven. He cannot control the trust. He cannot expose Greywake. He cannot testify about Daniel’s murder.”

“He saw me at the chandelier.”

“Noah’s testimony is not your biggest problem.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Owen is.”

Silence.

Owen stood behind him.

Adrian turned slightly.

“Owen?”

Owen’s face was gray.

“You told police,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

“After everything I did for you?”

Owen laughed once.

“You bought me.”

“I saved you.”

“You owned me.”

Adrian pointed the gun at him.

Wynn stepped backward.

Too far.

Isabel noticed.

The lawyer was preparing to run.

Owen said, “I watched you cut Daniel’s shroud.”

Noah looked at Isabel.

Adrian’s face emptied.

Owen continued.

“You told me to kill the cameras.”

“Shut up.”

“You waited for Daniel to sail.”

“Shut up.”

“You watched the boat burn.”

Adrian fired.

Owen dropped behind an engine block.

The bullet struck metal.

Police outside now had the gunshot.

The tactical plan changed instantly.

Adrian screamed toward the walls.

“You brought them!”

Isabel said, “Of course.”

Wynn ran.

Margaret grabbed the trust seal.

Adrian lunged for her.

Isabel tackled him.

The pistol skidded beneath the workbench.

Noah screamed.

Owen emerged and pulled Noah’s chair backward.

Wynn reached the side door.

It burst inward.

Police shouted.

“DOWN!”

Wynn dropped.

Adrian shoved Isabel off and grabbed the flare gun from the tender.

He fired toward the warehouse lights.

The flare struck a canvas cover.

Fire erupted overhead.

Smoke filled the building.

Adrian ran toward Noah.

Owen blocked him.

Adrian punched him.

Margaret untied Noah.

“Go!”

Noah clutched his wooden sailboat.

Adrian grabbed Margaret from behind.

A knife appeared in his hand.

“Back!”

Police stopped.

The blade pressed near Margaret’s throat.

Isabel raised her hands.

“Adrian.”

He was crying now.

Not softly.

Rage and grief mixed together.

“She chose him every time.”

Margaret said, “This is not about Daniel anymore.”

“It was always about Daniel.”

“No.”

Her voice was calm despite the knife.

“It is about you refusing to become anyone except his brother.”

Adrian’s hand trembled.

Fire spread across the canvas above them.

Sprinklers activated.

Water exploded from pipes.

Adrian dragged Margaret toward the south dock.

Isabel followed.

“Let her go.”

“Stay back.”

“Take the papers.”

“I need her.”

“No. You need her signature.”

“I need everyone to stop choosing Daniel!”

Margaret closed her eyes.

There it was.

The motive beneath the money.

Not legal.

Not financial.

Human.

Rotten.

Small.

Adrian reached the racing tender.

He forced Margaret aboard.

Then grabbed Noah.

Isabel screamed.

“No!”

Adrian pulled Noah onto the boat.

The engine started.

Owen shouted, “Fuel line!”

Adrian looked at him.

Owen’s face changed.

The old tender had not been properly serviced.

Gasoline fumes filled the stern.

One spark from the flare could ignite it.

Adrian stared at the burning warehouse.

Then at the child.

For one second, Daniel’s death repeated itself.

Cut cable.

Fire.

Water.

A Bennett boy trapped by Adrian’s need for control.

Noah looked up at his uncle.

“You killed Daddy.”

Adrian froze.

May you like

Those four words did what police weapons could not.

They made him hesitate.
