Chapter 3 - The Signature Sophie Never Made

Sophie stared at the signature for nearly a minute.

“That isn’t mine.”

William had asked Daniel to leave the conference room before showing her the document.

Victor was there.

So was Helena.

Rachel Kim placed the Harrow Capital agreement on the table.

“It purports to pledge certain dealership real estate interests and trust distributions as additional collateral.”

Sophie looked at her father.

“I was in Napa that week.”

Victor leaned back.

“Your assistant may have used your electronic signature.”

“For an eighteen-million-dollar loan?”

“It was refinancing.”

“You told me Harrow was a vendor.”

Helena intervened.

“Sophie, the structure is complicated.”

“Then explain my signature.”

“It may have been included in an executive consent package.”

“I sign those through DocuSign.”

Rachel turned the document.

“This was wet-signed.”

Silence.

Sophie looked at the notary seal.

“Who is Stephen Lott?”

Victor said quickly, “Outside counsel.”

Rachel replied, “Former outside counsel. His license was suspended last year for unrelated escrow violations.”

Victor shot her a look.

William watched him.

“You understand why my team needs the trust originals now.”

Victor folded his arms.

“This is becoming an interrogation.”

“It became an interrogation when my team found a signature your daughter says is false.”

Sophie turned toward Victor.

“Dad.”

He stared at her.

“Did you sign my name?”

“No.”

“Did Helena?”

“No.”

Helena’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

William closed the folder.

“We’re done for tonight.”

Victor stood.

“Chairman Price, you cannot accuse me in my own building and walk out.”

William looked at him.

“I just did.”

Victor’s face reddened.

William continued.

“Our team will send a formal diligence request by morning.”

“And if I refuse?”

“The acquisition terminates.”

Victor glanced at Sophie.

She saw something she had rarely seen on her father’s face.

Fear.

Outside, reporters had already gathered.

The viral clip had reached more than two million views.

DEALERSHIP MOGUL HUMILIATES DAUGHTER’S BOYFRIEND—DISCOVERS HE’S BILLIONAIRE BUYER’S SON

Sophie hated every version.

They made Daniel look secretly powerful.

Her look foolish.

And Victor monstrous.

Only the last description felt uncomplicated.

Daniel waited beside the elevators.

Sophie approached.

“You knew about the loan?”

“No.”

“Your father did.”

“He learned tonight.”

“How?”

“His team has been doing confirmatory diligence.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Is there anything happening in my life that your family doesn’t know before I do?”

Daniel absorbed it.

“Sophie.”

“No.”

She held up a hand.

“I need you to understand something. My father humiliated you. That was disgusting.”

Daniel said nothing.

“But you humiliated me differently.”

“I never meant to.”

“You let me stand there in front of everyone and discover who you were from your father.”

“I didn’t know he would come to me.”

“You knew he was coming.”

“Yes.”

“And you planned to propose anyway.”

“Yes.”

She looked at the ring box.

“Why tonight?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because I thought afterward everything would become complicated.”

Sophie stared.

“You wanted the yes before the complications.”

His silence answered.

She shook her head.

“That isn’t romantic, Daniel. It’s manipulative.”

The word hurt because it was true.

He had wanted one clean moment before money, surnames, and corporate negotiations polluted everything.

He had never considered that Sophie had a right to enter that moment with all the facts.

“I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

“That doesn’t help?”

“No.”

She entered the elevator alone.

Daniel remained in the showroom.

William approached.

“You should have told her.”

Daniel gave him a tired look.

“You’ve been saying that for two years?”

“I’ve been saying hiding from my name isn’t the same thing as becoming your own man.”

Daniel turned.

“You wanted me on your board before I finished college.”

“I wanted my son around.”

“You wanted an heir.”

William’s expression hardened.

“And you chose a proposal at the seller’s signing ceremony.”

“I didn’t know Sophie’s father had scheduled the event the same night when I reserved the private gallery.”

William paused.

“Private gallery?”

Daniel nodded toward the upper level.

“I had arranged dinner upstairs after the guests left.”

“So you weren’t proposing in front of everyone.”

“Victor saw the ring when I was showing Sophie where we were going.”

William exhaled.

The humiliation had been even more senseless.

“Are you going to kill the deal?” Daniel asked.

“I may kill it because the numbers are fraudulent.”

“Not because of me.”

William looked at him.

“You think I would spend two hundred eighty million dollars to avenge a ring?”

“I think people are already going to assume that.”

William smiled faintly.

“Then give them something else to talk about.”

The next morning, Continental Dealer Finance suspended Grant Premier’s ability to increase inventory borrowing until Victor provided updated financial statements.

It was not a default.

Not yet.

But dealerships survived on floorplan financing.

Without access to it, Victor could not replace sold inventory.

The nine-store empire could begin suffocating within weeks.

Victor called an emergency executive meeting.

Sophie attended remotely from her apartment.

Helena presented options.

Sell real estate.

Borrow more from Harrow.

Push Price to close.

Then Victor said:

“Sophie, you need to speak with Daniel.”

Her face became still on the screen.

“No.”

“This affects three thousand employees.”

“You want me to use my relationship to influence his father.”

“I want you to save the company your mother helped build.”

Sophie’s eyes narrowed.

“Then show me the Grant Family Trust.”

Victor froze.

Helena looked at him.

Sophie continued.

“All of it.”

“There’s nothing relevant.”

“My forged signature is attached to an eighteen-million-dollar loan supposedly secured partly by trust distributions.”

Victor’s voice hardened.

“Be careful what you’re accusing me of.”

“Be careful what you ask your daughter to ignore.”

The call ended.

Victor stared at the blank screen.

Helena waited.

Then she said quietly, “She’s going to look.”

May you like

Victor answered:

“Then we make sure she finds what we want her to find.”
