Chapter 11 - Isabella’s Complete Voice

The recording began with static.
Then Isabella.
Her voice was older than Lucas remembered.
Tired.
He sat beside Bianca.
Elena sat across from them.
Independent counsel recorded the listening session.
Isabella spoke to a small handheld recorder while working late in the atelier.
Elena makes me furious.
Bianca closed her eyes.
This was the sentence she had preserved.
The digital clip she once played for Kessler.
The clip she had used to convince herself their mother regretted the restoration plan.
The tape continued.
She makes me furious because she forgave me too early.
Elena’s eyes filled.
Isabella laughed softly on the tape.
She says we were young. We were scared. My father had money. Life was complicated. She turns every betrayal into a reason to understand someone. I hate it.
Lucas looked at Elena.
She wiped her face.
Isabella continued.
I knew by 1996 that Elena’s redemption had been dishonest. I did not know the signature was forged until this year. That distinction matters legally. It does not matter morally. I let the company keep benefiting from her work because admitting what happened would have endangered everything I had built.
Bianca’s breathing changed.
That was cowardice disguised as responsibility.
The room became silent.
Isabella continued.
Bianca says correcting this now is selfish because Lucas’s financing may suffer. Maybe she is right about the timing. She is wrong about the truth. There will never be a convenient year to admit a company was built partly on someone else’s invisible labor.
Elena covered her mouth.
Lucas stared toward the speaker.
Then Isabella addressed her children.
Lucas, you think numbers can make the world fair if you measure enough things. They cannot.
Lucas almost smiled through tears.
Bianca, you think being powerful means nobody can make you feel small. That is not power. That is fear in good clothes.
Bianca stood abruptly.
“Turn it off.”
Lucas looked at her.
“Sit down.”
“No.”
“Bianca.”
“I said turn it off.”
Elena reached toward the player.
Lucas stopped her.
“No.”
Bianca stared at him.
He pressed play.
Isabella’s voice returned.
I love both of you more than this company. If Moretti Atelier can only survive by hiding Elena, then it does not deserve to survive in its current form.
Bianca began crying.
Not elegantly.
Not quietly.
She sat again.
I am signing the restoration papers tomorrow. If something happens before then, Miriam has copies. Elena has the notebook. The blue file contains the original stock certificate, Carlo’s correspondence, and the board consent Samuel Chen signed tonight.
Lucas leaned forward.
“Samuel Chen.”
Former outside director.
Still alive.
Retired in California.
Isabella continued.
The board consent matters. Carlo’s original theft created legal confusion. I cannot fix thirty years with one signature. But I can finally stop adding to the lie.
The tape clicked.
Then one final statement.
Bianca, if you are hearing this because you found the tape before Lucas did, do not destroy it. You will want to. That is exactly why you must not.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Bianca stared at the floor.
Elena looked at her.
“You didn’t destroy it.”
Bianca whispered, “I never knew it existed.”
Elena believed her.
That mattered.
Lucas contacted Samuel Chen immediately.
Samuel was eighty-one.
His memory was imperfect.
His records were not.
He found a copy of a faxed board consent.
Dated the night Isabella died.
The consent authorized issuance and transfer arrangements intended to settle Elena’s founder claim, subject to final execution.
Samuel had signed.
So had Isabella.
A third director had not.
The board required two of three signatures.
It had them.
Priya nearly shouted when she saw it.
“This changes everything.”
“Does it prove ownership?” Elena asked.
“It proves the company formally authorized a settlement mechanism.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning Bianca’s claim that this was merely Isabella’s private guilt is dead.”
Lucas’s independent counsel agreed.
Vallon would now require formal resolution before investing.
Elena had real leverage.
Then Bellweather Private Bank sent a default notice to Bianca.
Her collateral representations were under investigation.
She had ten business days to cure or refinance.
If she failed, her Moretti shares could be seized and sold subject to transfer restrictions.
Bianca’s personal crisis became corporate.
She stormed into Lucas’s office.
“I need the company to guarantee the loan.”
“No.”
“You guarantee it and Bellweather backs off.”
“No.”
“I own a major stake.”
“So does the company whose dresses you pledged without permission.”
Bianca stared.
“If Bellweather takes my shares, we lose family control.”
Lucas remained calm.
“Then refinance personally.”
“I can’t.”
“Sell the apartment.”
Her expression changed.
“Sell Aire assets.”
“They’re worthless.”
“Then you are asking Moretti Atelier to rescue you from a loan you hid while Moretti is negotiating with Elena over a fraud you helped hide.”
Bianca’s eyes filled.
“Family used to mean something.”
Lucas stood.
“It still does.”
He looked at her.
May you like
“It just doesn’t mean nobody tells you no.”
For the first time, Bianca realized Lucas might let her lose everything.
