Chapter 16 - No Way Back

Police would not authorize David entering Bennett Tower alone.

Richard made the decision for them.

He sent live video showing Elena and Celeste inside the apartment.

A digital timer on the wall counted down from ninety minutes.

Richard spoke calmly.

“At zero, evidence stored in this building disappears.”

Detective Shah said, “Could be bluff.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“He’s burned records before.”

Richard contacted David directly.

“Come alone or I leave before police arrive.”

“You already know police are involved.”

“I know everything your company knows.”

That confirmed the leak was still active.

David looked around the command room.

Then at Thomas Wren’s name on the board system.

Not Thomas.

Someone with real-time access.

Simone.

Security.

Police.

Or—

David looked at his replacement CEO dashboard.

Richard still had administrator privileges through the company’s legal technology contractor.

Their internal communication platform was compromised.

David said aloud, “Shut down Bennett corporate network access.”

Technicians isolated the system.

Richard’s video feed vanished.

So did his visibility into their plan.

It was the first time David had taken power away from him instead of reacting.

Police planned covert entry through service levels while David approached the building openly as distraction.

He agreed.

Before leaving, he knelt beside Noah.

Anna had brought him to a secure police location at David’s insistence after threats escalated.

“Dad, are you going to get Mom?”

“I’m going to help.”

“You promised not to get mad.”

“I remember.”

Noah took the brass B-17 key from his pocket.

David had returned it after police finished processing it.

“Take this.”

“Why?”

“Mom said it keeps truth safe.”

David closed Noah’s fingers around it again.

“No. You keep it.”

Noah looked frightened.

“What if you don’t come back?”

David’s throat tightened.

“Then you remember something.”

“What?”

“None of this was your job to fix.”

He hugged him.

Then turned to Maya.

She stood with Gabriel.

David said, “I’m sorry again.”

Maya met his eyes.

“I know.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it was no longer refusal to hear him.

That mattered.

At Bennett Tower, David entered alone through the lobby.

Richard called.

“Thirty-ninth floor.”

David entered the elevator.

Police teams moved through a neighboring service stairwell two levels below.

Richard could no longer see their communications.

The apartment door opened before David knocked.

Celeste stood there.

A bruise darkened her jaw.

“Come in.”

David stared.

“Where’s Richard?”

“Inside.”

“Are you helping him?”

“No.”

“Then why are you opening the door?”

“Because he told me to.”

David entered.

Elena sat at the dining table.

Her wrists were free now.

Richard stood beside the window holding a handgun.

David stopped.

Elena looked at him.

Twenty-two months collapsed into one moment.

He had imagined this reunion thousands of times.

In every version, he ran to her.

In reality, neither moved.

Too much stood between them.

Richard smiled.

“The husband returns.”

David ignored him.

“Elena.”

“David.”

Her eyes moved over his face.

“You look older.”

“So do you.”

She almost laughed.

Almost.

Richard lifted the weapon.

“Touching later.”

Celeste stood near the kitchen.

Richard ordered David to sign a settlement agreement withdrawing his trust challenge and supporting the Westlake sale or any replacement transaction Richard approved.

David looked at the document.

“Westlake withdrew.”

Richard’s face flickered.

“You think there aren’t other buyers?”

“This isn’t about selling the company.”

“No?”

“You want immunity money and leverage.”

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand business.”

“No. I understand you.”

David put down the papers.

“You spent twenty years making everyone afraid of what you knew.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You signed them.”

“The Northstar approvals?”

“The family. The company. Every lie. Your name is on all of it.”

David nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena watched him.

Richard seemed surprised.

David continued.

“I was careless. Proud. Easy to manipulate. I signed things I should have questioned. I ignored Elena. I trusted my father. I hit Maya because I saw what I expected instead of what happened.”

Richard tightened his grip on the gun.

“You think confession makes you noble?”

“No.”

“Then why say it?”

“Because shame doesn’t control me if I stop hiding it.”

Celeste stared at him.

Richard laughed.

“Very therapeutic.”

Then David saw it.

The timer.

Not connected to a gas system.

Connected to a shredder unit in the office.

Richard intended to destroy documents.

The fire threat was partly bluff.

Elena followed his eyes.

Tiny nod.

Richard noticed.

“Enough.”

He pointed the gun at Elena.

David’s body tensed.

Richard smiled.

“There he is.”

The anger.

The impulse.

The trap.

David forced himself still.

“Tell me what you need.”

Richard stepped closer.

“I need you to admit Elena created Northstar.”

Celeste said, “She didn’t.”

Richard swung the gun toward his wife.

“Shut up.”

Celeste did not.

“I did.”

David looked at her.

She continued.

“I created Northstar. I stole the first money. You expanded it. You paid Cole. You ordered Marrow to hold Gabriel.”

Richard’s face twisted.

“You pathetic—”

“And I recorded you.”

Richard froze.

Celeste touched the diamond pendant at her throat.

The same pendant she always gripped when afraid.

She pulled.

The chain snapped.

Inside the pendant was a tiny recording device.

Richard lunged toward her.

At the same instant, Elena swept a glass from the table.

It shattered against the floor.

The prearranged signal.

Police breached the service entrance.

Richard spun.

The gun fired.

May you like

Celeste fell.

And David had no idea where the bullet had gone.
