Chapter 15 - Brother and Sister

Vanessa turned.
For the first time, Adrian saw her truly terrified.
“Grant?”
“You were supposed to get the card.”
“I was.”
“You confessed to half the damn thing.”
Her face changed.
She understood.
“Are you recording me?”
Adrian said nothing.
Grant raised the pistol.
“Take off your coat.”
Outside, police listening to the transmission heard every word.
But Grant had planned ahead.
A man in a dark jacket had cut power to the exterior communications relay moments earlier.
The audio dropped.
Detective Brooks cursed into her headset.
Inside, Grant motioned with the gun.
“Phone.”
Adrian placed it on the floor.
“Recording device too.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You knew.”
“Of course he knew,” Grant snapped. “He finally hired competent people.”
Adrian slowly removed the transmitter.
Grant smashed it beneath his shoe.
The room went silent.
Vanessa whispered, “You didn’t tell me you were coming.”
“I don’t trust you anymore.”
“I’m your sister.”
“You became a liability when you attacked the kid.”
Vanessa flinched.
Adrian noticed.
Not guilt.
Insult.
Grant pointed toward the ceiling cache.
“Get the envelope.”
Adrian stayed still.
“You kill me, police know you’re here.”
Grant smiled.
“They knew Vanessa was here.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Grant planned to blame her.
She understood too.
“You son of a bitch.”
Grant shrugged.
“You always wanted the glamorous part.”
“You said we were partners.”
“We were.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“I covered Claire for you.”
“You covered yourself.”
“I lied to Adrian. I took the ring. I stopped Stein from meeting him. I went back to the mechanic.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“Stop talking.”
“You needed me.”
“I needed access.”
Adrian watched the alliance collapse.
The conspiracy that had destroyed his family was finally devouring itself.
Vanessa turned to him.
“He cut the hose.”
Grant aimed at her.
“Shut up.”
“You asked Samuel how long it would take, then you cut it.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I saw the knife.”
Adrian’s pulse roared.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with rage.
“You told me Claire would get a warning and pull over.”
Grant laughed.
“She would have ruined everything.”
“So you meant to kill her.”
“I meant to solve the problem.”
The sentence hung in the room.
Adrian would remember it forever.
Outside, police had lost audio but not visual surveillance from a long-lens camera.
They saw the gun.
Brooks ordered the tactical team forward.
Grant heard the first movement downstairs.
His expression changed.
“You brought them too close.”
Adrian moved suddenly.
Not toward Grant.
Toward Vanessa.
He knocked the lighter from her hand.
She screamed.
Grant fired.
The bullet struck the wooden bedpost.
Adrian hit the floor.
Police crashed through the house.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
Grant grabbed Vanessa around the neck and pulled her in front of him.
She screamed.
“Grant!”
He backed toward the hidden passage.
Adrian saw the envelope hanging halfway out of the ceiling compartment.
Claire’s trust.
Grant saw him look.
“Don’t.”
Adrian did not move.
Grant dragged Vanessa backward.
“You ruined everything,” Vanessa hissed.
“You ruined it when you lost control with Sophie.”
“She was hiding the card!”
“She was five!”
The irony stunned Adrian.
Grant Keller had helped engineer Claire’s death, stolen millions and pointed a gun inside a family home.
Yet even he understood Vanessa’s attack on Sophie had been reckless.
Vanessa elbowed him.
Grant lost balance.
Police fired a nonlethal impact round.
He dropped the gun.
Officers tackled him.
Vanessa ran toward Adrian.
For half a second, he thought she was seeking protection.
Then she grabbed the envelope.
Adrian caught her wrist.
“Let go.”
“It’s mine!”
“It belongs to Sophie.”
“She has everything!”
Vanessa’s mask finally shattered.
“She has your love. Claire had your name. Grant had the company. What did I get?”
Adrian stared at the woman he married.
“Everything you stole.”
Police pulled Vanessa away.
She screamed as they handcuffed her.
“You chose me!”
Adrian did not answer.
Detective Brooks retrieved the envelope.
Inside was the original notarized trust amendment.
Claire’s signature.
Harold Stein’s seal.
First Atlantic Fiduciary named successor trustee.
And a handwritten cover letter.
Adrian read the first line.
If this document is being opened because I am dead, do not let guilt make Adrian weak.
He almost laughed through his tears.
Claire knew him.
Even now.
The trust documents blocked Grant’s forged amendment.
But one major problem remained.
The audio recording had cut before Grant’s most explicit statements.
The police heard Vanessa’s partial admissions before the signal failed.
They did not record Grant saying he cut the brake hose.
Vanessa heard it.
Adrian heard it.
But Grant’s defense team would attack their credibility.
And Vanessa had every incentive to shift blame.
Rebecca arrived near dawn.
She read the trust.
“Enough to stop the sale.”
“Enough to convict Grant?”
“Not by itself.”
Adrian looked toward the broken bedpost.
Grant had nearly killed him.
Claire’s case was still incomplete.
Then investigators searched Grant.
Inside his coat they found Claire’s old phone.
Adrian stared.
“Why would he carry that?”
Brooks powered it into an evidence bag.
“He probably took it from the lake-house cache.”
The phone had been dead for eighteen months.
Its screen was cracked.
Its data partially corrupted.
But when technicians examined it, they discovered something Grant apparently never knew.
Claire had activated automatic audio recording through a security application shortly before her final drive.
And the last file was still there.
