Chapter 9 - Claire’s Ledger

Nathan did not confront Richard.

That was his first good decision in days.

Instead, Margaret persuaded him to stop reacting and start building a case.

“Anger tells them what you know,” she said.

“What should I tell them?”

“Nothing.”

Nathan hated nothing.

He was a founder. He solved problems by moving faster than everyone else.

Claire had spent years trying to teach him patience.

Now patience became revenge.

The forensic team restored Claire’s photographs from the old terminal.

They showed invoices, account numbers, corporate registrations, and spreadsheets.

One image contained Claire’s handwritten heading:

RICHARD’S LEDGER

Under it were seven transactions.

$1.2 million.

$2.8 million.

$940,000.

$3.5 million.

Each moved through a legitimate Mercer Maritime vendor before reaching an affiliate linked to Vale Strategic Capital.

Richard had hidden theft inside real work.

Susan Bell brought in outside counsel and forensic accountants.

They confirmed enough to expand the investigation.

Nathan sat through the meeting.

For once, he did not interrupt.

At the end, the lead accountant, Priya Shah, said, “Mr. Mercer, I need to ask an unpleasant question.”

“Ask.”

“Did Mr. Vale ever pay you personally?”

“No.”

“Benefits? Real estate? Travel? Investment opportunities?”

“No.”

“Did he contribute to any entity you control?”

Nathan started to say no.

Then stopped.

“The Mercer Family Foundation.”

Priya looked up.

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Priya did not.

“Find out.”

Nathan’s assistant produced the records.

Vale-linked donors had contributed $4.6 million over three years.

Vanessa had overseen foundation development.

Nathan stared at the report.

“There.”

Priya nodded.

“Potentially legitimate philanthropy. Potentially another influence channel.”

Nathan thought of gala dinners.

Awards.

Photos of Vanessa standing beside Claire.

Vanessa had not entered Nathan’s life after Claire died.

She had been inside it all along.

That afternoon Margaret opened Claire’s sealed package.

Nathan expected documents.

Instead, the first item was a child’s cloth-bound journal.

Mia’s name was embossed on the cover.

Nathan touched it carefully.

“What is this?”

“Claire’s letters to Mia.”

His throat closed.

“I didn’t know.”

“She didn’t want you to read them unless Mia chose to share them one day.”

Margaret removed it from his reach.

Nathan nodded.

He would respect that.

The second item was a flash drive.

The third was a handwritten letter addressed to Nathan.

Margaret gave him the letter.

Nathan stared at Claire’s handwriting.

He was afraid again.

He opened it.

Nathan, if you are reading this because I am gone, I am sorry that grief has become the place where truth finally found you.

He stopped.

Margaret waited.

He continued.

Richard is taking money from the company. Vanessa is helping him. I do not believe Martin created the scheme, but I believe he knows enough to be dangerous.

Nathan looked up.

“Claire knew Martin was involved.”

Do not assume every suspicious signature is forged. Some are yours. That is why this works.

Nathan flinched.

Claire had known his weakness exactly.

You sign quickly. You trust confidence. You mistake certainty for competence.

He almost smiled through the pain.

That sounded like her.

Then:

If they ever try to use Mia to control you, remember this: the person who decides what a child is allowed to need will eventually decide what everyone else is allowed to have.

Nathan stared at the sentence.

The empty bowl.

Suddenly it seemed less like a random cruelty and more like Vanessa repeating the same instinct Claire had recognized years earlier.

Control through deprivation.

Margaret inserted the flash drive into an isolated computer.

It contained scanned bank records.

Not enough for a criminal case by themselves.

But enough to identify accounts.

Priya began tracing them.

Then one file appeared.

A screenshot of a message between Vanessa and Richard.

Vanessa:

Claire is pushing Nathan to cancel the Atlantic closing.

Richard:

Keep him focused on expansion.

Vanessa:

She thinks I’m spying on her.

Richard:

You are.

Nathan leaned back.

The room was silent.

Another message:

If Claire tells him everything?

Richard replied:

Nathan doesn’t hear things that interfere with what Nathan wants.

Nathan closed his eyes.

There it was.

The conspiracy’s greatest weapon.

Not blackmail.

Not forged signatures.

Nathan himself.

He whispered, “He knew me.”

Margaret answered, “He studied you.”

A notification sounded from Priya’s laptop.

She had identified one of Claire’s account numbers.

Her expression changed.

“This account still exists.”

“Whose?”

“Harbor Vale Consulting.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“How much?”

Priya stared at the screen.

“Current balance is approximately nine-point-seven million.”

Nathan felt his pulse rise.

“Can we freeze it?”

“Not without legal process.”

“Then start.”

Priya shook her head.

“There’s more.”

She rotated the screen.

The account had transferred $600,000 that morning.

Destination:

A litigation finance firm.

Nathan frowned.

Margaret understood first.

“They’re funding the fight against you.”

Priya opened the memo line.

M. MERCER BENEFICIARY PROCEEDING

Nathan went still.

Mia.

May you like

Richard and Vanessa were not only defending themselves.

They were preparing a lawsuit in his daughter’s name.
