Chapter 8 - The Family Vote

Cal’s meeting place was an abandoned lakeside service station two hours north.
Daniel insisted Claire not go alone.
Cal never appeared.
They waited forty minutes.
Then Claire received a photograph.
Cal bound to a chair?
No—too dangerous/graphic. Instead: Cal standing outside an airport departure board, face tense, holding newspaper? Let's make adult threat. Maybe picture of his daughter leaving school implies blackmail. Better.
A photograph of Cal’s adult daughter entering her Milwaukee apartment.
Under it:
He has family too.
Claire showed Daniel.
“Victor?”
“Maybe.”
“Can we trace it?”
“Ortiz can try.”
Cal’s phone went dead.
That afternoon, Victor summoned a special board meeting at Mercer Velocity.
Claire attended.
She had not sat in the glass boardroom since Adrian died.
Victor occupied Adrian’s chair.
That insult felt deliberate.
Evelyn sat to his right.
Bell presented the agenda.
“Market stabilization measures.”
Victor spoke first.
“Our stock has lost nearly four hundred million dollars in market capitalization because private family accusations were leaked.”
Claire said, “Then disclose the concealed wreck.”
Board members shifted.
Victor continued.
“I propose removing Claire Mercer from the Mercer Foundation board and suspending her nonvoting observer rights here pending investigation.”
Naomi, seated beside Claire as adviser, whispered, “He wants you outside.”
Claire stood.
“You should know Victor transferred company funds through sham suppliers.”
Bell immediately objected.
“Unsubstantiated.”
Claire distributed summaries.
Victor did not look at them.
“You stole privileged corporate documents.”
“They came from Adrian’s personal fail-safe.”
“Which you unlawfully accessed.”
“My husband created it for me.”
Victor smiled.
“Can you prove that?”
Claire held up her wedding ring.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Victor’s composure slipped.
Only slightly.
The board took a recess.
During it, Evelyn approached Claire.
“Withdraw the accusations.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor has enough votes.”
“Then vote against him.”
Evelyn looked away.
Claire understood.
“You still won’t.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Because your husband borrowed from the company too.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“Adrian moved eighteen million dollars into an undisclosed project.”
Victor had told Evelyn a different version.
Another secret.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who told you?”
“Victor.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You still believe him?”
“I saw the transfer.”
Naomi joined them.
“What transfer?”
Evelyn described it.
Naomi’s expression changed.
“That wasn’t Adrian taking money.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I approved it.”
Claire stared at her.
Naomi said, “Project Bastion.”
“What is that?”
“Adrian purchased the land beneath the Lake Geneva test facility.”
Evelyn frowned.
“The company already owned it.”
“No. Mercer Velocity leased it from a holding company.”
“Whose?”
Naomi looked at Claire.
“Leo’s.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Adrian had established a trust for Leo containing the land and several patents.
It was lawful, disclosed to auditors, and structured years earlier.
The eighteen million dollars had been a board-approved purchase option payment into the trust.
Victor had transformed it into theft when speaking to Evelyn.
Claire faced her mother-in-law.
“He has been feeding you just enough truth to make the lie believable.”
Evelyn looked toward Victor through the boardroom glass.
Something inside her broke.
But when voting resumed, she still sided with him.
Claire lost nine votes to four.
Her foundation seat was removed.
Her observer rights suspended.
Victor smiled after the meeting.
“You keep confusing suspicion with power.”
Claire stepped close.
“And you keep confusing temporary power with safety.”
His smile disappeared.
Then he said quietly, “Adrian made the same mistake.”
Claire’s pulse jumped.
“What does that mean?”
Victor walked away.
Naomi caught Claire’s arm.
“Don’t chase him.”
Claire did anyway.
“Victor!”
He entered the executive elevator.
Claire reached the closing doors.
“Did Adrian threaten you the night he died?”
Victor looked at her through the narrowing gap.
“No.”
“Then why are you still afraid of a dead man?”
The doors closed.
Naomi approached.
“You got to him.”
“No.”
Claire looked at the elevator.
“I reminded him.”
Her phone rang.
Detective Ortiz.
“We found Cal.”
Claire’s heart jumped.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Milwaukee.”
“What did he say?”
Ortiz paused.
“He says he never contacted you.”
Claire stopped walking.
“What?”
“He says the voicemail wasn’t him.”
Claire replayed the voice in her mind.
“Then someone wanted me to believe Cal knew about the twenty-two-minute delay.”
Ortiz said, “Or someone wanted you to go looking for him.”
Claire turned toward Naomi.
A trap.
Then Daniel called.
“Claire, get somewhere private.”
“Why?”
“I found the source of Victor’s debt.”
“Who did he owe?”
“No one outside the family.”
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel took a breath.
“Victor owed Adrian.”
May you like
And the amount was not eighteen million.
It was sixty-three million dollars.
