Chapter 5 - The Land Beneath the School

Briarwood Academy sat on eighty-seven acres north of Dallas.

Most families saw football fields, oak trees, science buildings, and manicured lawns.

Grant Blake saw real estate.

The thirty disputed acres bordered a new toll-road interchange.

Jonathan had known the land would appreciate.

So had Grant.

What Jonathan had not known was that Grant already held an option contract through Lone Mesa allowing him to resell the property after acquisition.

To whom?

Carter Development’s analysts found the answer.

A national logistics company.

Potential resale price:

$58 million.

Grant wanted Briarwood to sell him the land for $31 million.

Then he intended to flip it.

Profit before taxes and financing:

possibly $20 million.

Jonathan sat in David’s office.

“That’s why he needed speed.”

“And secrecy.”

“And Reeves?”

David nodded.

“Ridgepoint would receive twelve percent of Lone Mesa’s profit.”

Jonathan stared.

“The principal gets millions.”

“If closing occurs.”

“And Madison knew enough to target Emily.”

“Apparently.”

Jonathan looked out the window.

“This is corruption.”

“Potential breach of fiduciary duty, self-dealing, fraud depending on disclosures. Maybe criminal conduct, maybe civil. We need documents.”

“I want the attorney general.”

“Slow down.”

Jonathan looked at him.

David continued.

“We have screenshots from teenagers and corporate records. Before accusing people of crimes, we verify.”

Jonathan smiled without humor.

“You and Rachel would’ve liked each other.”

“We did.”

Jonathan forgot.

Rachel had hired David years earlier.

Evidence moved quickly after that.

Briarwood’s board formed a special committee excluding Grant.

Principal Reeves was placed on administrative leave.

The land transaction was frozen.

Grant resigned as board president but retained his trustee seat pending investigation.

The power reversal was immediate.

Madison’s father, once untouchable on campus, could no longer enter board offices without counsel.

But Emily paid a price.

At school, students no longer called her poor.

Now they called her princess.

Billionaire baby.

Daddy’s lawyer.

Some apologized sincerely.

Others became fascinated.

Girls who had ignored her suddenly asked about her house.

Boys wanted invitations.

Emily hated it.

One afternoon she threw her backpack onto the kitchen floor.

“This is worse.”

Jonathan looked up.

“What happened?”

“Everyone knows.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re not.”

He flinched.

“You always wanted me to stop hiding.”

“I wanted you safe.”

“You wanted people to know so they’d be scared.”

Jonathan opened his mouth.

Stopped.

There was some truth in that.

Emily continued.

“Madison poured water on me and suddenly nobody sees me anymore. They see your money.”

Jonathan sat.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Yes, it is.”

She turned away.

Jonathan almost followed.

Almost forced the conversation.

Then Rachel’s voice came back.

Let her come to you.

He stayed.

Emily reached the stairs.

Then stopped.

“Ryan got punched.”

Jonathan stood.

“What?”

“After practice.”

“By whom?”

“Two seniors.”

“Why?”

“He told people to stop posting my address.”

Jonathan’s blood heated.

“Where is he?”

“Urgent care.”

Jonathan grabbed his keys.

Emily stepped in front of him.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“His brother is with him.”

“I can help.”

“You’ll make it bigger.”

Jonathan stopped.

Again.

That word.

Bigger.

He forced himself to breathe.

“What does Ryan want?”

Emily looked relieved.

“He wants us not to post anything.”

“All right.”

Jonathan hated every syllable.

But he obeyed.

Later Ryan called.

One eye swollen.

“I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine.”

“Two stitches.”

Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

“Who did it?”

“School is handling it.”

“That phrase currently has a poor track record.”

Ryan laughed painfully.

“They were already suspended.”

“Police?”

“My brother filed a report.”

“Good.”

Ryan became serious.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Madison told Chloe that if the school deal fails, her dad loses everything.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Everything?”

“That’s what she said.”

Grant Blake was wealthy.

At least publicly.

He owned construction companies, energy investments, and commercial property.

Why would one land deal matter that much?

Jonathan asked David to review publicly available liens.

The answer arrived the next morning.

Grant’s empire was leveraged far more heavily than anyone knew.

Three properties faced loan maturity.

One lender had issued a default notice.

Grant needed cash.

Fast.

The Briarwood flip was not greed alone.

It was rescue money.

That made him more desperate.

And desperate men rarely stopped after one lie.

At 4:40 P.M., Jonathan received an anonymous email.

Attached was a photograph of Emily in the school parking lot.

Taken that afternoon.

Text beneath it:

DROP THE BOARD INVESTIGATION. NEXT TIME WATER WON’T BE THE PROBLEM.

Jonathan stared at the screen.

His hands began shaking.

Then he called Emily.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

May you like

And for the first time since the bucket hit the cafeteria floor, Jonathan was truly afraid.
