Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Last Secret

Claire read Daniel’s letter alone.

Not because Jake asked her to.

Not because Miriam suggested privacy.

Because for ten minutes she needed Daniel to belong only to her.

My love,

If you are reading this, then keeping you out of it did not protect you.

I am sorry.

I told myself I was shielding you and the kids. The truth is uglier. I was afraid that if I told you, you would ask me to walk away, and I knew I wouldn’t.

You deserved the choice to be angry with me while I was alive.

Claire pressed her fist against her mouth.

Daniel continued.

Copper Ridge is laundering money from the resort through fake vendors and inflated contracts. Collins is taking cash and favors. Grant is using the scheme to manipulate Blackpine’s financials before the Northstar sale.

Marcus knows about the surveillance manipulation.

I do not know whether Marcus is protecting Grant or protecting himself.

Eleanor knows part of this. She does not know how far it goes.

I accepted the $40,000 only as part of Eleanor’s controlled test. I never spent a dollar.

If they call me a thief, that is how they will do it.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then came the paragraph she feared.

Grant offered me one million dollars.

I refused.

Tonight, I found evidence someone accessed Snowcat Twelve under my credentials.

I am supposed to inspect Ridge Relay Two.

I should cancel.

I know that.

But the relay controls emergency communications on the upper mountain, and there are guests staying above it.

If this is nothing, I will feel foolish tomorrow.

If it is not nothing, this letter may be the last honest thing I can give you.

Claire whispered, “You should have stayed.”

The paper trembled.

I love Emma.

I love Noah.

I love you.

And love does not excuse what I did wrong.

I should have trusted you with the truth.

Daniel

Claire cried until there was nothing left.

Then she opened the USB with Detective Ruiz and Omar present.

It contained copies of invoices.

Emails.

Network logs.

Photographs.

A video statement from Daniel recorded the evening before his death.

He sat in the maintenance office wearing the flannel shirt Claire had thrown away after the funeral because it still smelled like him.

“My name is Daniel Bennett,” he began.

“If this file is being watched because I’m unavailable, then the people named in these records may have tried to blame me.”

He explained Copper Ridge.

North Basin.

Collins.

Grant.

Then Marcus.

“Marcus Reed has administrative ability to alter security exports and vehicle tracking. He told me tonight not to take Snowcat Twelve.”

Daniel stared directly into the camera.

“I don’t know whether that means he’s warning me or setting me up.”

Claire leaned closer.

Then Daniel said something none of them expected.

“Grant is not the only person with a financial motive.”

Ruiz paused the video.

“Who?”

They continued.

“Marcus has received payments from a private security contractor called High Mesa Risk.”

Omar searched the files.

A spreadsheet appeared.

High Mesa Risk had received $1.8 million from Vale Alpine over four years.

Its owner?

Marcus Reed’s former business partner.

Daniel continued.

“High Mesa billed services that were never performed. I believe Grant knows. I believe Marcus knows about Copper Ridge. They may be protecting each other.”

This was not one man commanding servants.

It was a network of mutually assured destruction.

Grant needed Marcus to erase evidence.

Marcus needed Grant to protect his security fraud.

Collins needed both to keep kickbacks flowing.

Daniel had threatened all three.

The final file was an audio export.

Time stamped 11:58 p.m. the night Daniel died.

Grant’s voice.

“You spoke to my mother.”

Daniel replied, “Yes.”

“You were warned.”

“You offered me money. That isn’t a warning.”

Marcus spoke.

“Enough.”

Daniel: “You told me not to take Twelve.”

Marcus: “Because somebody accessed it.”

Grant: “Marcus.”

Marcus: “He already knows.”

Silence.

Daniel said, “Who accessed it?”

The recording ended.

Claire stared at the screen.

“Why?”

Omar examined metadata.

“The file may have been interrupted.”

“Or Daniel stopped recording.”

Ruiz looked thoughtful.

“It establishes Grant and Marcus were with Daniel before he left.”

“Where?”

“Metadata says his phone connected to the maintenance-office network.”

Claire whispered, “They were all together.”

Ruiz nodded.

“And now I can prove they were discussing Snowcat Twelve before the crash.”

This was the strongest evidence yet.

But Grant’s attorneys attacked immediately.

They claimed Daniel selectively recorded conversations.

They challenged chain of custody.

They suggested he manipulated files as part of his own embezzlement scheme.

Then came the blow Claire had not expected.

Eleanor Vale withdrew cooperation.

Her new attorney announced she would no longer provide voluntary testimony.

Claire drove to Eleanor’s house.

“You said you were done protecting him.”

Eleanor looked shattered.

“It isn’t Grant.”

“Then who?”

“My grandson.”

Claire stopped.

Grant had a fourteen-year-old son, Oliver, who lived mostly with his mother in California.

“What about him?”

“Grant threatened to expose documents from my late husband’s trust. If they’re litigated, Oliver’s education and inheritance could be tied up for years.”

Claire stared.

“So you folded.”

“For a day.”

“What?”

Eleanor stepped aside.

Miriam was already sitting inside.

Claire looked between them.

Miriam said, “Eleanor contacted me this morning.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“Grant thinks I have withdrawn.”

“But you haven’t.”

“No.”

“Why lie?”

“Because I want him to believe the board investigation is collapsing.”

Claire slowly understood.

“You’re baiting him.”

Eleanor nodded.

“We think Grant still needs the original silver recorder.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains something the copy does not.”

“How do you know?”

Eleanor placed a text message on the table.

It had been sent from Collins’s attorney.

COLLINS SAYS GRANT HAS ASKED THREE TIMES WHETHER POLICE FOUND THE ORIGINAL RECORDER.

Claire felt the room tighten around her.

Grant had possessed the recorder on K-17.

But investigators never found it.

Which meant he no longer had it.

Someone else did.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

Adrian Collins’s attorney.

“Mrs. Bennett, my client wants to speak with you.”

“Why?”

“He says he knows where Daniel Bennett’s original recorder is.”

Claire looked at Miriam.

“And what does Collins want?”

May you like

The attorney answered.

“Protection from Grant Vale.”
