Chapter 6 - Seventeen Minutes

Silver Pine’s rapids attraction used a computer-controlled pump system.

Normal family operation ran at Level Four.

The system could increase to Level Six for adult training sessions.

On the afternoon Lily was pushed, the pumps had been changed from Four to Six.

Seventeen minutes before Bianca brought Lily to the water.

The access log showed the override came from a maintenance credential assigned to supervisor Luis Ortega.

Luis had been attending his daughter’s school performance forty miles away.

“I didn’t use it,” he told Detective Ruiz.

“Who knew your password?”

“Nobody.”

“Was it written anywhere?”

Luis looked uncomfortable.

“In the maintenance office. Emergency binder.”

“Who can enter?”

“Managers. Executives.”

“Grant Mercer?”

Luis nodded.

Nathan listened from across the interview room.

His anger became almost unbearable.

Afterward Ruiz stopped him.

“You are going home.”

“I want Grant arrested.”

“We don’t arrest people because you’re furious.”

“The flow was increased.”

“Using someone else’s credential.”

“Grant had access.”

“So did fourteen other people.”

“Bianca knew the cameras had a blind spot.”

“Yes.”

“She asked what happened if someone lost consciousness.”

“Yes.”

“She asked what happened to Lily’s shares if she died.”

“According to Lily.”

Nathan clenched his jaw.

Ruiz said, “We are building it.”

“While Grant still runs my company.”

That was the other crisis.

Because Nathan had been charged with misdemeanor assault for striking Jake, HLG’s board convened an emergency governance committee.

Grant argued Nathan should temporarily step aside from operational control.

Nathan expected the proposal to fail.

It passed six to three.

Grant Mercer became acting CEO.

Nathan remained chairman and majority shareholder but lost day-to-day authority pending legal review.

He walked out of the boardroom humiliated.

Grant followed him.

“Nathan.”

“Stay away from me.”

“You’re making this worse.”

Nathan turned.

“You were with my wife near the rapids.”

Grant lowered his voice.

“Detective Ruiz told you not to confront me, didn’t she?”

Nathan froze.

Grant smiled faintly.

“You think I don’t have lawyers?”

“Did you increase the water?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Bianca how Lily’s trust worked?”

“I explained corporate structure to your wife.”

“Why?”

“Because you signed a postnup giving her economic rights in a sale.”

“I didn’t knowingly sign it.”

“That sounds like a problem between you and your lawyers.”

Nathan stepped closer.

Grant didn’t move.

“You knew Amelia opposed Ridgewell.”

“Amelia opposed everything she didn’t control.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“Don’t talk about her.”

Grant laughed.

“There he is.”

“Who?”

“The Nathan I’ve spent fifteen years cleaning up after.”

Nathan stared.

Grant continued.

“You think you built HLG alone? I negotiated the debt. I found investors. I kept Silver Pine alive during Amelia’s treatment while you lived at hospitals.”

“I trusted you.”

“You used me.”

“Is that what you tell yourself?”

Grant’s smile vanished.

Nathan said, “If you helped Bianca hurt Lily, I will—”

“What?”

Grant leaned in.

“Hit me too?”

Nathan stopped.

Grant stepped away.

“That’s your problem now. Every threat proves my point.”

He walked back into the boardroom.

Nathan stood alone.

He had lost control again because he had allowed anger to become evidence against himself.

That evening Lily’s forensic interviewer completed a second recorded session.

Nathan was not allowed to watch live.

Later Ruiz summarized.

“Lily described multiple incidents.”

Nathan braced himself.

“Bianca locked her in a linen closet twice.”

His fists tightened.

“Made her stand outside in the cold after spilling milk.”

Nathan shut his eyes.

“Destroyed one of Amelia’s letters and told Lily she did it herself.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“Lily says Bianca tore it and then told you Lily had damaged the box.”

Nathan remembered.

He had grounded Lily for three days.

Ruiz continued.

“Bianca also told Lily that children who lie can be sent away.”

Nathan could barely speak.

“Why didn’t Lily tell me?”

Ruiz’s expression softened, but not enough to absolve him.

“She did.”

Nathan looked at her.

“She says she tried.”

The room felt very small.

“When?”

“Several times.”

Ruiz slid a printed transcript across the table.

Lily: I told Dad Bianca was mean.

Interviewer: What did Dad say?

Lily: He said she was trying hard and I had to try too.

Nathan stared at the words.

His own voice returned from memory.

Bianca is trying to be your family.

You can’t keep punishing her because you miss Mom.

You need to be fair.

He had turned Lily’s grief into a weapon against her.

Ruiz quietly said, “There’s another witness.”

Nathan looked up.

“Who?”

“Your former nanny.”

“Marisol?”

Marisol Vega had worked for the family for four years.

Bianca fired her nine months earlier for “stealing jewelry.”

Nathan had believed Bianca.

Of course he had.

“What did Marisol say?”

“She says she never stole anything.”

Nathan’s heart sank.

Ruiz continued.

“She says Bianca fired her after Marisol threatened to tell you what she saw.”

“What did she see?”

Ruiz’s eyes hardened.

“Bianca holding Lily’s face under cold shower water as punishment.”

Nathan stood so abruptly the chair fell backward.

Ruiz did not stop him.

May you like

He covered his mouth.

For the first time since the rapids, Nathan began to cry.
