Chapter 10 - The Files Alice Kept

Alice Chen had worked at Silver Peak for eighteen months.
She left after Dominic ordered her to classify land-option payments as marketing costs.
“I knew it was wrong.”
“Why didn’t you report it?” Evelyn asked.
Alice looked ashamed.
“My husband had cancer. I needed the insurance.”
No one judged her.
Too many people in the story had been controlled by what they feared losing.
Alice kept copies because she worried Silver Peak would blame her later.
Her files documented false invoices.
Land flips.
Payments to Vanessa.
Payments to Leonard Mercer’s trust.
And a consulting account labeled RSP.
RSP received $2.1 million.
“Who is RSP?” Daniel asked.
Alice shook her head.
“Dominic called it the legal channel.”
They traced the account.
Rockwell Strategic Partners.
Beneficial owner:
Graham Pike.
Whitmore Alpine Resorts’ general counsel.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Claire had been right not to trust him.
Four insiders.
Vanessa.
Dominic.
Leonard.
Graham.
The legal department had helped conceal related-party deals.
Graham also drafted the proposed Montana lease.
And reviewed the therapeutic-school paperwork.
Evelyn stared at the documents.
“He wasn’t merely answering Vanessa’s trust questions.”
“He was designing the path,” Margaret said.
Alice provided emails.
One from Graham to Vanessa:
If N is placed residentially, D will be vulnerable. M can be approached as protector through welfare concerns.
“M is Margaret,” Daniel said.
Another:
Do not frame this as asset control. Frame it as stability for the child.
The entire scheme depended on language.
Never:
send Noah away.
Instead:
therapeutic placement.
Never:
take trust land.
Instead:
stabilize assets.
Never:
steal.
Instead:
consulting.
Power liked soft words.
Police and federal investigators expanded the case.
Because bank wires crossed states and the resort company was publicly traded, federal agencies became involved.
The SEC requested information.
The FBI opened interviews.
Graham resigned as general counsel before the board could remove him.
Leonard resigned from the board.
Dominic remained suspended.
Vanessa’s divorce lawyers tried to distance her from Silver Peak.
“She was a passive investor,” they claimed.
Alice laughed when she heard.
“She approved payroll.”
Then Alice produced a message from Vanessa:
We need Noah’s placement before the March trust meeting.
Alice had asked:
Why is a child relevant to Montana?
Vanessa replied:
Because Margaret will do anything for him.
That was motive.
Not to kill Noah.
To control Margaret through fear for him.
Abuse him.
Describe him as unstable.
Push him toward residential placement.
Then offer a solution Margaret might accept out of desperation.
A committee.
A land lease.
A profitable route through Noah’s property.
Margaret sat beside Noah that night while he worked on a school puzzle.
He looked up.
“Was Vanessa mean because of money?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Partly.”
“Then why didn’t she just ask for money?”
Margaret almost laughed.
“Because people who want control usually want more than money.”
“What’s control?”
“Getting to decide what everyone else does.”
Noah thought.
“Like when she said I had to eat alone.”
“Yes.”
“Or when Dad says I can’t stay up?”
Margaret smiled.
“Not all rules are control.”
“That sounds suspicious.”
She laughed.
Then Noah became serious.
“Did Vanessa hate me?”
Margaret’s heart tightened.
“I don’t know.”
“She said I made Dad sad.”
“Your father was sad because he lost your mother.”
“I reminded him.”
“Yes.”
“That’s bad?”
“No.”
Margaret leaned closer.
“You are not responsible for adults feeling grief.”
Noah nodded but did not fully believe it.
Healing would take longer than prosecution.
At headquarters Daniel faced shareholders.
He disclosed the Silver Peak investigation publicly.
Whitmore shares fell eleven percent.
He took questions for forty minutes.
One analyst asked:
“Did management fail?”
Daniel answered:
“Yes.”
The room went quiet.
Another:
“Are you personally responsible?”
“For some failures of oversight, yes.”
The board later reprimanded him formally.
He accepted it.
Then Evelyn called.
Alice had one more file.
A recording.
Dominic and Vanessa.
Recorded accidentally during a conference-room video call.
Vanessa’s voice:
Margaret won’t sign while Noah is happy here.
Dominic:
Then make the house impossible for him.
Vanessa:
He already hates me.
Dominic:
Good. Difficult children make desperate grandmothers.
Daniel listened once.
Then walked into the bathroom and vomited.

His wife had not merely lost her temper with Noah.
For at least a year, making him miserable had been part of a financial strategy.
