Chapter 10 - The Vault Beneath Cat Cay

Federal agents reached the Cat Cay property first.
Nathan was not allowed inside until the site was secured.
He hated that.
But he stayed on the dock with Ella.
She had insisted on coming to the Bahamas only after her therapist approved the trip and only if she remained away from the search area.
Nathan watched her feeding bread to fish.
“You ever been here?”
She shook her head.
“Nana hated islands.”
“Why?”
“She said boats can be followed.”
Maria had spent eight years looking over her shoulder.
Nathan wondered how many ordinary joys fear had taken from Ella.
Agent Cho appeared.
“We found the vault.”
Nathan stood.
“And?”
“Locked.”
“Of course.”
The old Sterling records room sat beneath a concrete marina office.
Nathan remembered his father showing it to him when he was fourteen.
The combination had been Richard Sterling’s founding date.
Investigators tried it.
Nothing.
Ella looked toward the old building.
“Can I see?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Evidence.”
She rolled her eyes.
Nathan smiled faintly.
Then Ella touched her dolphin pendant.
“Nana said Mom liked dolphins because they remember people.”
Nathan stared.
Grace had always used the same six-digit number for private keepsakes.
The date Nathan proposed.
June 8.
He told Cho.
The vault opened.
Inside were rusted file cabinets.
Old ledgers.
Microfilm.
And a modern waterproof case.
Grace’s initials were written across it.
G.S.
Nathan stopped at the evidence line.
He was not allowed to touch.
Cho opened it.
Inside:
Original Blue Harbor invoices.
A second flash drive.
A handwritten affidavit signed by Grace.
And a photograph of Malcolm, Adrian, and Vanessa together at the Bimini marina the morning after Grace disappeared.
Nathan felt his stomach turn.
Grace had dated the affidavit.
June 4.
Three weeks after the supposed deaths.
She wrote:
I, Grace Sterling, am alive as of the date of this statement. My daughter Ella Sterling is alive and in the care of Maria Ruiz. My husband Nathan Sterling does not know our location. I believe Malcolm Sterling, Adrian Sterling, and Vanessa Carlisle participated in unlawfully confining me and attempting to obtain evidence concerning Sterling Maritime financial crimes.
Nathan stared.
There.
Grace had exonerated him.
Explicitly.
The affidavit continued.
She described the night aboard the Aurora.
Vanessa drugged Nathan’s drink.
Grace discovered it after seeing Vanessa crush tablets into his whiskey.
Grace switched the glasses before Nathan drank enough to be seriously harmed.
That explained Nathan’s foggy memory.
Vanessa then realized Grace knew.
Grace fled with Ella and Maria.
At Bimini, Adrian and Malcolm confronted her.
They demanded Grace surrender Blue Harbor evidence and sign an amendment giving Adrian successor control over Ella’s trust shares.
She refused.
Vanessa sedated her.
Grace woke at the clinic.
Nathan read every line.
His hands shook.
Then Grace described escaping and locating Maria.
Finally:
I am returning to Cat Cay because Mr. Vale located original customs records linking Malcolm to Blue Harbor’s earliest accounts. If something happens to me, Nathan must know his brother did not begin this. Malcolm did.
Nathan looked at Cho.
“She went after Malcolm.”
“Yes.”
“What happened next?”
The second flash drive contained a video.
Grace at Cat Cay.
Sitting exactly inside the vault.
She looked exhausted.
Hair tied back.
Bruise beneath one eye.
But alive.
“Nathan,” she said.
He stopped breathing.
“If you see this, I’m sorry I didn’t come home.”
Ella stood behind him.
Nathan turned.
She was too close.
Her therapist approached.
Nathan almost stopped the video.
Ella whispered, “I want to hear Mom.”
The therapist nodded gently.
Nathan let it play.
Grace looked into the camera.
“I wanted to come home every minute.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“But I didn’t know who around you was safe. Lucas lied. Adrian controlled company security. Malcolm controlled the board. Vanessa knew our house codes.”
Grace swallowed.
“I thought if I came back without proof, they would take Ella or make me look insane.”
Nathan’s face tightened.
That was exactly what they had already begun doing.
Grace continued.
“I made mistakes.”
A pause.
“I should have trusted you sooner.”
Nathan whispered, “Yes.”
Ella touched his hand.
Grace spoke:
“If I don’t return, protect Ella from this company before you protect the company from scandal.”
Nathan looked down.
Eight years later, that instruction still mattered.
The video continued.
“Malcolm is coming tonight.”
Everyone froze.
Grace had known.
“He contacted me through Thomas. He says he wants to negotiate.”
Nathan stared at Cho.
“What date?”
June 4.
The last confirmed date Grace was alive.
Grace continued:
“I don’t believe him.”
Then she lifted something into frame.
A red waterproof envelope.
“I’m placing the master account records somewhere Malcolm can’t reach without exposing himself.”
The video ended.
No location.
Nathan almost cursed.
Then Ella said:
“Red envelope.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What?”
“Nana had one.”
His pulse jumped.
“Where?”
Ella frowned.
“She didn’t keep it.”
“Who did she give it to?”
“I don’t know.”
Then she remembered.
“A man with a bird tattoo.”
Agent Cho immediately asked:
“When?”
“When I was little.”
“Where?”
“Key West.”
Nathan looked at Rachel.
The master records had survived.
May you like
Somewhere.
With a man Maria trusted enough to carry a red envelope for eight years.
