Chapter 13 - What Ethan Gave Daniel

Laura discovered the betrayal by accident.
Rachel’s forensic consultant had restored an old email from Ethan’s account.
The message was four years old.
Three days after Laura vanished.
TO: Daniel Carter
SUBJECT: Laura’s backup
I got into her laptop. Everything is copied to the drive you gave me. Please see if you can find where she went.
Laura read it twice.
Then she turned the screen toward Ethan.
“You didn’t just give him access.”
Ethan’s face fell.
“You gave him a copy.”
“I was desperate.”
“Of my entire computer.”
“I thought he could search financial accounts faster.”
“Because he was CFO.”
“Yes.”
Laura stood.
Her body was still weak enough that standing too quickly made her sway.
Ethan reached for her.
She pulled away.
“You handed my evidence to the man who imprisoned me.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I didn’t.”
“And I keep telling you that not knowing was a choice.”
The words cut.
Emily stood in the hallway.
Neither saw her at first.
Laura continued.
“I told you Daniel was dangerous.”
“You told me he was stealing.”
“I told you your mother had altered trust records.”
“You didn’t tell me you thought they might hurt you.”
“Would you have believed that?”
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came.
Laura nodded.
“That’s what I thought.”
Emily’s voice broke behind them.
“Stop!”
They turned.
She was crying.
“You’re making Mom leave again.”
Laura rushed toward her.
“No, sweetheart.”
“You’re yelling!”
Ethan knelt.
“This isn’t your fault.”
“I hate this family!”
The words landed on all of them.
Emily ran upstairs.
Laura followed.
Ethan remained alone in the kitchen.
He had spent four years imagining the moment Laura returned.
In those fantasies, reunion erased grief.
Reality did not erase anything.
It exposed everything grief had covered.
That night Laura told him she wanted separate living arrangements indefinitely.
“I need to learn who I am now.”
Ethan nodded.
“And Emily?”
“We co-parent.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
“She needs both of us.”
“I know.”
“Laura…”
“No promises.”
He swallowed.
“I wasn’t asking for one.”
She knew he was lying.
The next morning, Daniel exploited the fracture.
He released selected emails showing Laura had considered divorce.
He suggested Ethan was now assisting her because he feared losing custody and property.
Then came something worse.
A television network received an anonymous recording.
Laura’s voice.
From captivity.
“I swear I’ll destroy Carter Heritage. I’ll burn the whole family down.”
The clip ended.
Ethan heard it once and knew immediately.
“What came before that?”
Laura looked sick.
“Daniel telling me Emily would be better off if I never came back.”
The public did not hear that part.
Within hours, strangers online called Laura unstable.
A fraud.
A manipulator.
Rachel issued a preservation demand and threatened defamation claims.
But reputational damage moved faster than litigation.
Ethan went to Carter Heritage headquarters despite his suspension.
He found Daniel in the lobby.
Cameras were outside.
Employees stopped walking.
“You leaked the recording,” Ethan said.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Can you prove it?”
“You recorded her while she was imprisoned.”
“That is your interpretation.”
“You’re going to prison.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Maybe.”
For the first time, fear flickered in his eyes.
Then arrogance replaced it.
“But before that happens, I can still make sure you lose the company, the house, and whatever chance you think you have with Laura.”
Ethan’s hands curled into fists.
Daniel noticed.
“Hit me.”
Ethan stared.
“Go ahead.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“That would make tomorrow’s headlines easy.”
Ethan forced his hands open.
Daniel’s smile faded slightly.
Power reversal.
Small, but real.
Ethan walked away.
Later Ortiz called.
Margaret’s new attorney had offered a proffer.
Before prosecutors negotiated anything, Margaret would explain what happened.
Laura agreed to listen to a summary, not attend.
Margaret admitted helping conceal Laura.
Admitted feeding her.
Admitted forging trust documents.
Admitted financing Morrow.
But she claimed Daniel alone made the decision to abduct Laura.
Laura shook her head when Ortiz repeated it.
“She’s still lying.”
“How do you know?”
“Because the night they put me down there, Daniel was panicking.”
Laura closed her eyes.
“He kept asking Margaret, ‘What do we do now?’”
“And Margaret?”
“She said…”
Laura stopped.
Ethan waited.
“She said, ‘We finish what we started.’”
Ortiz wrote it down.
Laura continued.
“And there was another person.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
“Not in the room. On the phone.”
“Who?”
“I heard Margaret say, ‘Calvin, the problem is contained.’”
Rachel leaned back slowly.
Calvin Reed.
The family lawyer.
Not just financial fraud.
Not just document forgery.
He may have known about the kidnapping the night it happened.
Ortiz stood immediately.
“We’re getting a warrant for his communications.”
But someone had anticipated them again.
By the time investigators reached Calvin’s office, his paper files had been removed.

His computer server had been wiped.
And Calvin Reed himself was gone.
