Chapter 8 - The Acquisition Plan

Vanessa ran.

Not dramatically.

She simply turned and hurried toward her car.

Claire followed.

“Vanessa!”

Richard caught Claire’s arm.

She jerked free.

“Don’t touch me.”

Vanessa shoved the box into her trunk.

Claire reached the car before she could close it.

“What is the Mercer Acquisition Plan?”

Vanessa stared at Richard.

He said, “Leave.”

Claire blocked the trunk.

“Not with trust records.”

Vanessa’s composure cracked.

“They’re company records.”

“They came from my trust’s warehouse.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Claire.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I’m calling police.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Wait.”

Richard turned sharply.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You told me the warehouse records were corporate.”

“They are.”

“No,” Claire said. “Some are trust property.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Richard’s voice became threateningly quiet.

“Get in your car.”

Vanessa did not move.

Claire saw fear.

Not fear of her.

Fear of Richard.

Police arrived before the box left.

Claire had already told Rebecca where she was going, despite ignoring the advice not to go. Rebecca had quietly requested a welfare check after Claire stopped responding.

It was the kind of annoying legal caution that suddenly felt wise.

The officers did not decide ownership on the spot. They documented the dispute and prevented anyone from destroying records while attorneys sought a court order.

By morning, the box was under temporary preservation.

Maya reviewed scanned copies first.

The Mercer Acquisition Plan had been created nine months before Claire married Richard.

Its goal was blunt:

Obtain operational influence over Summit Crown Resorts.

Develop relationship with controlling Bennett heir.

Identify trust restrictions.

Create acquisition vehicles capable of purchasing underperforming or non-core family assets.

Claire read the second line repeatedly.

“Develop relationship.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Another page listed Claire personally.

Widowed? No, the premise didn't specify; we made Richard spouse but we don't need previous spouse. Noah's father could be Claire's ex-husband living elsewhere? Wait we've implied Claire family surname Bennett, son Noah Bennett. We haven't said father status. Need establish. Could say Noah's father, David Bennett, divorced and living in Seattle? But Claire's maiden Bennett same? Hmm. We named Claire Bennett Mercer, suggesting Bennett is maiden and maybe Noah shares her surname. Fine, father could not matter. Let's avoid.

The plan described Claire as “primary decision-maker; limited financial attention; high reliance on trusted operators.”

She felt exposed.

Predicted.

Targeted.

“You were researched before he dated you,” Rebecca said.

Claire swallowed.

“Is that illegal?”

“No.”

“Just disgusting.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s name appeared as a financial consultant.

She and Richard had formed Silver Ridge together.

Their relationship predated Claire by at least a year.

The affair had not begun after the marriage.

It had survived through it.

Claire went to the bathroom and threw up.

When she returned, Noah was sitting outside Rebecca’s office.

He looked at her.

“You look sick.”

“I’m okay.”

“That means no.”

Claire sat beside him.

“Richard knew Vanessa before he met me.”

Noah frowned.

“Like friends?”

“Yes.”

“Like kissing?”

Claire did not want to put adult details on him.

“They were involved.”

Noah looked furious.

“He tricked you.”

Claire nodded.

Then Noah said something harder.

“You still didn’t believe me.”

She closed her eyes.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he spent a long time teaching me that he was the reasonable one.”

Noah looked down.

“He always said I was dramatic.”

“I know.”

“He told you I broke his laptop.”

Claire remembered.

The laptop had fallen from the kitchen island three months earlier.

Richard said Noah knocked it off while angry.

Noah denied it.

Claire punished him by taking away his games for a week.

Her stomach turned.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Another memory.

A broken wineglass.

A scratched car door.

A missing envelope.

Each time Richard had suggested Noah.

Not always accused.

Suggested.

Claire had accepted a pattern that Richard himself had created.

Psychological groundwork.

If Richard needed Noah branded dishonest later, he had started months in advance.

“I’m sorry,” Claire whispered.

Noah’s eyes filled.

“You always believed him first.”

There was no defense.

“Yes.”

“Why did you marry him?”

Because he was charming.

Because he understood numbers.

Because after her father died, every decision felt heavy.

Because Richard made certainty look like love.

“I made a mistake.”

“A big one.”

“Yes.”

Noah stood.

“I don’t want to talk.”

Claire let him leave with Ethan, who had become an unexpected steady presence during the investigation because Noah trusted him.

She did not chase.

Consequences had to be endured, not immediately repaired.

That afternoon, Vanessa requested a meeting through her lawyer.

She wanted immunity from civil claims in exchange for cooperation.

Rebecca laughed.

“She’s negotiating like she’s holding the only evidence.”

“Does she?”

“We’ll find out.”

Vanessa entered with counsel.

She looked exhausted.

Claire did not greet her.

Vanessa placed a flash drive on the table.

“I have Richard’s Silver Ridge communications.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Claire almost admired the consistency.

Everyone around Richard kept insurance against everyone else.

“What do you want?” Claire asked.

“To avoid being destroyed with him.”

“You helped him target me.”

“Yes.”

“You helped forge my signature?”

Vanessa’s eyes flickered.

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“I know who created the certificate.”

“Who?”

“Ask Martin Keene.”

The lender.

Claire’s expression hardened.

Vanessa continued.

“But that’s not what Richard is most afraid you’ll find.”

“What is?”

“He used Silver Ridge to buy more than property.”

Claire waited.

Vanessa whispered, “He bought Summit Crown shares.”

“How many?”

“Enough that if he combines them with the proxies he’s collecting, he can challenge you.”

Claire stared.

“Challenge me for what?”

Vanessa answered.

“Control of the company.”

Richard had not married Claire merely to steal from an heiress.

May you like

He intended to replace her.
