Chapter 7 - The Estate Was Already Lost

Mercer Ridge had been dying for years.

Not physically.

The stone façade remained immaculate.

The gardens were maintained.

The ballroom chandeliers still glittered.

But financially, the estate was a corpse kept upright by debt.

Michael’s forensic accountants reconstructed the collapse.

Henry Mercer, Andrew’s late father, had leveraged the property to finance a chain of boutique hotels.

Two failed.

A third development stalled.

Then came litigation.

Tax liens.

Private lenders.

Henry died from a heart attack six years earlier, leaving Victoria control of an estate whose liabilities exceeded its realistic sale value.

“She could have sold it years ago,” Olivia said.

Michael nodded.

“For maybe thirteen or fourteen million.”

“So why didn’t she?”

“Pride.”

Elaine looked through old records.

“And something else.”

She found a letter from Richard Bennett to Henry Mercer written thirteen years earlier.

Henry,

Your wife’s conduct placed both of our companies at risk. I will not participate in concealing what she did. If Crestbridge funds are not returned, I will refer the matter for prosecution and notify your lenders.

Olivia read it.

“What happened?”

Elaine answered.

“The money was returned. Victoria settled.”

Michael continued.

“And Henry’s largest lender discovered undisclosed guarantees during due diligence anyway.”

“Dad caused Mercer’s collapse?”

“No.”

Elaine was firm.

“Henry and Victoria caused their own financial problems. Richard refused to hide them.”

That distinction mattered.

Victoria had spent fourteen years telling herself a different story.

At noon Detective Reed received a warrant for records from Caldera Event Services and Mercer Strategic Holdings.

The offshore two million had gone through a Cayman intermediary.

Recovering it would take time.

More importantly, internal communications began appearing.

One message between Victoria and Andrew had been deleted but recovered from cloud backup.

VICTORIA: Bennett girl confirmed at Museum Foundation gala.

ANDREW: I don’t want to do this.

VICTORIA: You want Mercer Ridge?

ANDREW: Of course.

VICTORIA: Then stop behaving like a child.

Another message:

ANDREW: What exactly am I supposed to do?

VICTORIA: Meet her. Be charming. The rest will happen naturally.

Olivia stared.

The first time Andrew had touched her hand, Victoria had probably been waiting for an update.

Michael looked ready to destroy something.

Olivia remained strangely calm.

Six months later:

ANDREW: I’m done. Find another way.

VICTORIA: There is no other way.

ANDREW: I’m not taking her money.

VICTORIA: You already took mine.

ANDREW: I’ll return it.

VICTORIA: And explain to Olivia why you approached her?

The messages continued.

ANDREW: I love her.

VICTORIA: Then marry her. Everybody wins.

Olivia closed the file.

Michael watched her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to stop?”

“No.”

That evening Andrew asked to meet again.

Olivia agreed only with lawyers present.

He looked worse.

“I never wanted the trust money after I knew you.”

“Yet you helped upload documents.”

“I was trying to buy time.”

“For whom?”

“For the estate. For my mother. For us.”

“There is no us.”

He closed his eyes.

Olivia continued.

“You keep describing betrayal as delay.”

Andrew whispered, “I thought once we were married, I could stop the transfer.”

“After you became co-controller?”

“Yes.”

“With forged documents?”

“I thought I could cancel everything.”

Michael stared.

“You are either lying or profoundly stupid.”

Andrew looked at him.

“Probably both.”

That was the first honest thing Olivia had heard him say.

Andrew pulled a key from his pocket.

“This opens my mother’s private study.”

His attorney immediately objected.

Andrew put it on the table.

“She keeps records there.”

Detective Reed did not touch it.

“We’re not using a private key to bypass lawful process.”

Andrew nodded.

“I know.”

“Why give it to us?”

“Because she has a red ledger.”

Everyone went still.

“What ledger?” Elaine asked.

“Payments. Claire. Lawyers. A mobile notary. People at Greyson.”

“Paper?”

“Paper and digital.”

Michael asked, “Where?”

“Usually in her study safe.”

Reed said, “We’ll handle it.”

Olivia watched Andrew.

“What aren’t you telling us?”

He hesitated.

She leaned forward.

“Every time you hesitate, another lie arrives.”

Andrew stared at the table.

“My mother sold the estate.”

Michael frowned.

“What?”

“Not yet. Agreement signed. Closing scheduled in thirty days.”

“To whom?”

“Blackthorn Heritage Partners.”

Michael searched.

His face changed.

“Andrew…”

“What?”

Michael turned the screen.

Blackthorn Heritage Partners was controlled through three LLCs.

The ultimate beneficial owner was Caldera Holdings.

Victoria’s entity.

Olivia understood.

“She’s selling Mercer Ridge to herself.”

Elaine nodded.

“Using borrowed money secured by the trust transfer.”

Andrew looked stunned.

“That’s impossible.”

Olivia almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Victoria had not been stealing Olivia’s money to save Andrew’s inheritance.

May you like

She was using Andrew to move the estate beyond his reach.

The son who had helped her trap Olivia was being robbed too.
