Chapter 1 - Behind the Glass

“Dad! Help me!”
Emily Mercer’s scream broke apart into another violent cough.
The eight-year-old struck both palms against the fogged glass door.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Outside the cabin, Vanessa stood perfectly still.
The brass key rested between two fingers of her right hand.
Beside her was Richard Vale.
Daniel Mercer’s oldest friend.
His chief financial officer.
And, judging by the way Vanessa’s hand rested against Richard’s chest, something far more dangerous.
Smoke rolled through the private spa cabin built into the east wing of Daniel’s mansion in Bedford, New York. A faulty—or supposedly faulty—gas water heater had filled the enclosed room with thick white fumes.
Emily’s knees trembled.
“Please…”
Richard looked toward the hallway.
“What if someone hears her?”
Vanessa’s eyes moved to Emily.
There was no panic in them.
Only calculation.
“Then she should’ve stayed quiet.”
Emily heard every word.
Her fear changed.
The door was not jammed.
Vanessa had the key.
She was choosing not to open it.
Emily staggered backward.
Her shoulder hit the tiled wall.
That was when she noticed the blinking blue light behind the decorative teak panel.
The waterproof camera.
Daniel had installed the spa security system after a plumbing leak the previous year. Vanessa had complained about it and eventually told everyone the camera had been disconnected.
But the light was blinking.
Emily looked directly toward it.
“Dad…”
Across the mansion, Daniel Mercer was standing in his study reviewing financial projections when the wall-mounted security console flickered.
A camera feed appeared.
Daniel almost ignored it.
Then he saw Emily.
For half a second, his mind refused to understand the image.
His daughter was behind fogged glass.
She was coughing.
Pounding.
Collapsing.
Outside stood Vanessa.
And Richard.
Daniel’s phone slipped from his hand.
He ran.
The distance between the study and the spa had never seemed so long.
He hit the hallway at full speed.
“EMILY!”
Inside the spa, Vanessa spun toward the sound.
Her face emptied of color.
Richard stepped away from her.
The door crashed open.
Daniel came through like a storm.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“Daniel—” Vanessa began.
He shoved past Richard.
The cabin door was locked.
Daniel grabbed the handle.
“Emily!”
Her hand appeared weakly against the other side.
“Daddy…”
Daniel pulled once.
Nothing.
“Where’s the key?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel turned.
Then he saw it.
In her hand.
His expression changed so completely that Vanessa took an involuntary step backward.
“Give me the key.”
“It’s not—”
“GIVE IT TO ME.”
Vanessa handed it over.
Daniel unlocked the door.
Smoke poured into the room.
He reached inside, caught Emily under the arms, and lifted her against his chest.
She wrapped herself around him instantly.
“Dad…”
“I’ve got you.”
She coughed against his neck.
“I’ve got you, sweetheart.”
Daniel carried her into the hallway and shouted for the house manager to call 911.
Then he looked back.
Richard stood near the wall, eyes lowered.
Vanessa looked frozen.
Daniel stared at them.
“You watched her.”
“No,” Vanessa said quickly. “Daniel, listen to me. The heater malfunctioned. We were trying to figure out—”
“You had the key.”
“It wasn’t the cabin key.”
“I just used it.”
Silence.
Richard finally spoke.
“This looks worse than it was.”
Daniel turned toward him.
Richard immediately regretted the sentence.
“You want to tell me,” Daniel said quietly, “what part looks worse than my daughter begging for help while my wife stands beside you holding the key?”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“She wasn’t supposed to be in here.”
Emily tightened her arms around Daniel.
His voice dropped.
“Neither were you.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed toward Richard.
It lasted less than a second.
Daniel saw it.
So did Emily.
Paramedics arrived four minutes later.
They placed an oxygen mask over Emily’s face and checked her pulse.
Daniel stayed beside the stretcher.
A police officer approached Vanessa.
“Ma’am, we need everyone to remain on the property.”
Vanessa immediately straightened.
“This was an equipment malfunction.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t get to explain anything to me.”
“Daniel—”
“Not one word.”
Emily reached for his sleeve.
“Dad.”
He bent down.
She pulled the oxygen mask slightly away.
“Keep it on, Em.”
“I have to tell you.”
“You can tell me at the hospital.”
Her fingers dug into his coat.
“No. Now.”
Something in her expression stopped him.
Daniel leaned closer.
Emily whispered.
“Vanessa and Richard were talking before the smoke.”
Vanessa heard her name.
Her head snapped around.
Emily continued.
“They said you were signing something tomorrow.”
Daniel’s body became completely still.
“What something?”
“The red file.”
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Emily swallowed.
“She said after you sign it, Richard gets your company.”
Daniel slowly raised his eyes toward his CFO.
Richard said nothing.
Emily wasn’t finished.
“They said you wouldn’t know until it was too late.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“She’s confused. She inhaled smoke.”
Emily flinched.
Daniel moved between them.
Vanessa stopped.
Emily’s voice trembled.
“And Vanessa said they were going to tell everyone you were sick.”
Daniel frowned.
“Sick?”
Emily nodded.
“She said people would think you were losing your mind.”
Richard finally spoke.
“This is insane.”
Emily looked at him.
“You said the board would believe you instead of Dad.”
Nobody moved.
The paramedic replaced Emily’s oxygen mask.
Daniel looked from Richard to Vanessa.
For years, he had trusted the two people standing before him more than almost anyone in his life.
Richard had been beside him since college.
Vanessa had slept beside him for three years.
And his daughter had just told him they were planning to take his company while building a story that he was mentally unstable.
Daniel remembered the camera.
He turned toward the security technician standing in the doorway.
“Save that footage.”
Vanessa’s head jerked toward him.
“What footage?”
“The spa camera.”
For the first time that night, real terror appeared in her eyes.
Richard whispered, “You said it was disabled.”
Daniel heard him.
So did the police officer.
Daniel stared at his oldest friend.
Richard closed his eyes.
And Daniel understood something terrifying.

Whatever had happened behind the glass door was not the beginning of the betrayal.
It was the moment he had finally seen it.
