Chapter 1 - The Choice

Eight-year-old Sophie Carter walked into her living room and saw her father kissing another woman.
“Daddy?!”
Her bright pink backpack slipped from her shoulder and hit the hardwood floor.
Ryan Carter jerked backward from Jessica Vale so quickly that his knee struck the coffee table.
Jessica grabbed the sofa for balance.
For one breathless second, nobody moved.
Then Sophie understood.
“You’re cheating on Mommy!”
Her voice cracked.
Ryan stood.
“Sophie, wait—”
But Sophie rushed forward. She shoved Jessica away from him with both hands.
“Get away from my daddy!”
Jessica stumbled against the sofa.
Ryan’s face changed.
The panic vanished.
Anger replaced it.
His hand moved before Sophie could retreat.
The sharp sound echoed through the room.
Sophie’s head turned with the blow.
Silence followed.
Ryan stared at his own hand.
“Don’t you ever touch Jessica again!”
Sophie froze.
Her fingers slowly rose to her cheek.
Jessica whispered, “Ryan…”
Then a voice came from behind them.
“What did you just do to my daughter?”
Ryan turned.
Emily Carter stood inside the open front door.
She was thirty-six, still wearing the navy coat she had put on for a lunch meeting that had ended early. Her keys were in one hand. Her phone was in the other.
She looked at Sophie.
At the red mark beginning to appear on her cheek.
At Jessica.
At Ryan.
Then at the wedding ring lying on the coffee table.
“Emily,” Ryan said quickly. “Calm down. Let me explain.”
She walked past him without answering.
“Sophie.”
The child ran into her arms.
Emily knelt.
“Look at me, sweetheart.”
Sophie’s lips trembled.
“I saw Daddy kissing her. I pushed her. Then Daddy hit me.”
Emily touched her cheek carefully.
“Does it hurt?”
Sophie nodded.
Ryan moved closer.
“It was a reflex. She attacked Jessica.”
Emily stood.
“She’s eight.”
“Emily—”
“She caught you cheating, and you punished her for seeing it?”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“You’re twisting this.”
Emily slapped him.
Ryan stared at her.
“That was for Sophie.”
She slapped him again.
“And that was for betraying this family.”
Jessica jumped to her feet.
“You can’t treat him like that!”
Emily turned.
“You kissed my husband in my home.”
Jessica flushed.
“You have no idea what’s happening.”
“You’re right. I don’t. What I know is enough.”
Jessica took a step toward her.
Emily pushed her backward.
“And you watched him hurt his own daughter.”
“Stop!” Ryan shouted.
Sophie flinched.
That ended the confrontation instantly.
Emily pulled Sophie against her.
“Mommy,” Sophie whispered, gripping her coat, “please don’t let Daddy hit me again.”
Something inside Emily hardened.
“He never will.”
She looked at the wedding ring on the coffee table.
Eleven years earlier, Ryan had slipped it onto his finger beneath white roses while promising that nothing would ever matter more than their family.
Emily picked it up.
Ryan watched.
For one painful second, she remembered the man she thought she had married.
Then she dropped the ring at his feet.
“You have two minutes to leave.”
Ryan’s expression darkened.
“This is my house too.”
Emily lifted her phone.
“Then explain Sophie’s cheek to the police.”
Jessica grabbed her coat.
Ryan did not move.
“Don’t do this in front of her.”
“You already did.”
“Emily, think about what you’re destroying.”
She almost laughed.
“You think I’m the one who destroyed it?”
Ryan looked toward Sophie.
“Sophie, I made a mistake.”
The child immediately moved behind Emily.
Then she stared at him with tear-filled eyes.
“No.”
Ryan stopped.
Sophie swallowed.
“You chose her.”
Ryan’s face collapsed.
Jessica looked away.
Two minutes later, she was outside.
Ryan reluctantly followed.
Emily slammed the door.
The deadbolt clicked.
Ryan began pounding.
“Emily! Open this door!”
She ignored him.
“Emily!”
Sophie covered her ears.
Emily led her toward the kitchen.
Then the pounding suddenly stopped.
Through the glass beside the door, Emily saw Ryan standing beneath the porch light.
Something in his expression had changed.
His anger was gone.
Now he looked frightened.
“Emily.”
She didn’t answer.
Jessica turned toward him sharply.
Ryan swallowed.
“Jessica wasn’t here just because of me.”
Jessica’s face drained of color.
“Ryan. Don’t.”
Emily stepped toward the door but did not unlock it.
“What does that mean?”
Ryan stared through the glass.
“I need something from the house.”
“What?”
Jessica grabbed his arm.
“Ryan, stop talking.”
Emily’s heartbeat changed.
Ryan pulled away from Jessica.
“Your father’s safe.”
Emily went still.
Her father, Thomas Bennett, had died three years earlier.
His old fireproof safe remained bolted inside the study closet. Emily kept family documents there—insurance papers, Sophie’s birth certificate, her father’s estate records, and the original share certificate proving Emily owned fifty-two percent of Bennett Home Group, the company Thomas had founded thirty-one years earlier.
Only Emily and Ryan knew the combination.
At least, she had believed that.
“What about the safe?” Emily asked.
Ryan looked at Jessica.
Jessica whispered, “If you tell her, you ruin everything.”
Emily stared at them.
“Ruin what?”
Ryan pressed one palm against the glass.
“There’s a document inside it.”
“What document?”
“The Bennett share certificate.”
Emily’s stomach turned cold.
Jessica closed her eyes.
Ryan continued.
“I need it before Monday.”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
Emily stepped closer.
“Why do you need my original share certificate?”
Jessica suddenly grabbed Ryan’s coat.
“We’re leaving.”
Ryan resisted.
“Jessica—”
“Now.”
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“What have you done?”
Ryan looked through the glass at his wife.
For the first time that afternoon, the shame on his face had nothing to do with being caught kissing another woman.
“I borrowed money.”
Emily stared.
“How much?”
Ryan said nothing.
“How much, Ryan?”
Jessica whispered, “Don’t.”
Ryan finally answered.
“Four million dollars.”
Emily felt Sophie’s fingers close around hers.
She could barely speak.
“From whom?”
“A private lender.”
“Why would my share certificate have anything to do with your loan?”
Ryan looked down.
That silence told Emily more than an answer would have.
Her voice dropped.
“You used my company shares.”
Jessica stepped backward.
Emily gripped the door handle.
“You pledged something you don’t own?”
Ryan finally looked up.
“I can explain.”
“No. You can explain to my lawyer.”
She turned away.
“Emily!”
She stopped.
Ryan’s final words came through the door.
“If they don’t get that certificate Monday, they’ll know the paperwork was fake.”
Emily slowly turned back.
Jessica stared at Ryan in horror.
Sophie whispered, “Mommy?”
Emily looked toward the hallway leading to her father’s study.
The affair had shattered her marriage.
But now she understood why Jessica had really been inside the house.
Someone had not merely betrayed Emily.
Someone had forged her name.
May you like
And the original proof of what she owned was sitting twenty feet away.
Or at least Emily prayed it still was.
