Chapter 2 - Fourteen Days

Ryan called his younger sister Claire first.
“Come get Lily.”
Claire heard his voice and did not ask why.
Twenty minutes later, she entered the kitchen.
She took one look at Lily and became still.
“What happened?”
Ryan answered, “Take her home with you. Please.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“She is not taking my stepdaughter anywhere.”
Lily screamed.
Claire instinctively pulled her closer.
Ryan’s face hardened.
“Do not touch her.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You think because you saw one ugly moment you can erase everything I’ve done for this family?”
“One?”
Ryan held up the phone.
“I have fourteen days.”
Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
Claire looked at him.
“Fourteen days of what?”
“I don’t know yet.”
He hated saying it.
Lily held his hand.
“You’re coming?”
Ryan crouched.
“Soon.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t stay with Vanessa.”
The sentence destroyed him.
“I won’t.”
He kissed her forehead.
Claire took Lily to her house.
The moment the garage closed, Vanessa changed.
The crying disappeared.
Her posture straightened.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You were forcing dog food on a four-year-old.”
“She wasn’t going to eat it.”
“So humiliation was the goal?”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“She had been screaming all morning.”
“About what?”
“You.”
Ryan went still.
“She cries every time you travel. Every time you work late. She wants you constantly. You have no idea what that does to a marriage.”
“Do not blame her.”
“I’m telling you reality.”
“The reality is that you were working with Mark.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Ryan opened the camera archive.
He began copying everything to encrypted storage.
Vanessa watched.
“You recorded me illegally.”
“I recorded my kitchen.”
“You recorded private conversations.”
“That is a question for lawyers.”
“You think this footage saves you?”
“From what?”
Her smile frightened him.
“You’ll see.”
Ryan called Helen Park, his estate attorney.
Then his family lawyer.
Then Detective Lena Ortiz through a contact at the local police department after explaining he needed to report suspected child abuse.
Helen answered first.
“Where is Lily?”
“With Claire.”
“Good.”
Ryan explained the hidden recording.
Then the trust reference.
Helen went silent.
“Ryan, do not confront Mark.”
“He is helping abuse my daughter.”
“I heard you. Do not contact him until we secure your documents.”
“What documents?”
“The estate amendment you electronically signed last month.”
Ryan stopped.
“What amendment?”
A pause.
“Ryan.”
“I didn’t sign a trust amendment.”
“Yes, you did.”
His stomach turned.
Helen opened her records.
Three weeks earlier, Ryan had signed a large electronic packet while traveling in Seattle.
It included financing consents, insurance approvals, tax documents, and what appeared in the index as an “estate administration acknowledgment.”
The actual inserted document amended Ryan’s revocable trust.
“I never reviewed that.”
“That is a problem.”
“What did it change?”
Helen’s voice tightened.
“If you are declared temporarily incapacitated, Vanessa becomes co-trustee.”
Ryan slowly sat down.
“And Lily?”
“Her inheritance remains in trust.”
“Controlled by?”
“Under the amendment, Vanessa has broad administrative authority until Lily turns thirty.”
Ryan stared at Vanessa across the kitchen.
She was watching him.
“How broad?”
“Health, education, maintenance, housing, therapeutic care.”
Therapeutic care.
He remembered Mark’s words.
When he sees how unstable she’s become…
Ryan felt sick.
“They wanted Lily to look disturbed.”
Helen went silent.
“Ryan, preserve everything.”
He ended the call.
Then he watched.
Fourteen days.
Breakfast removed.
Favorite toys hidden.
Vanessa telling Lily:
“Daddy goes away because you cry too much.”
Vanessa breaking a ceramic bowl, then photographing the pieces.
Ryan remembered receiving that photograph in Chicago.
Vanessa had written:
Another meltdown. I don’t know what to do anymore.
Ryan had replied:
No tablet tonight. I’ll talk to her when I’m home.
He stared at his own message.
He had punished Lily for something Vanessa did.
Another video.
Vanessa dumped orange juice onto the floor.
Then called Ryan.
“Lily threw her cup again.”
Another.
Vanessa turned off the visible kitchen camera before locking Lily in the laundry room.
Another.
Mark arrived at 10:42 p.m.
He and Vanessa kissed in the pantry.
Ryan paused the video.
His hands went numb.
The affair was not subtle.
Vanessa wrapped herself around Mark.
Mark whispered, “Once the Series D closes, we’ll finally have leverage.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“And Ryan?”
“He’ll be too busy fighting for Lily to notice the board.”
Ryan stood abruptly.
Vanessa had moved behind him.
“How long?”
She did not pretend confusion.
“Two years.”
He stared.
“You started sleeping with Mark before we married?”
“Yes.”
“You entered my house while pretending to help me after Emily died.”
Vanessa looked away.
Ryan’s first wife, Emily, had died from cancer when Lily was eighteen months old.
Vanessa had been a family acquaintance.
She helped with meals.
Childcare.
Funerals.
Grief.
Ryan had believed kindness became love.
“How long before you married me did Mark plan this?”
Vanessa whispered, “It wasn’t like that at first.”
“What was it?”
Silence.
He resumed the footage.
Mark opened Ryan’s home office.
Vanessa said:
“The hardware key wasn’t in the blue folder.”
Mark replied:
“Then find it.”
Ryan froze.
Hardware key.
An emergency security token tied to his Cole Secure Systems administrator account.
He stored one inside a fireproof envelope with his estate documents.
If Mark obtained it, he could authenticate as Ryan.
Corporate email.
Bank portals.
Electronic signatures.
The house intercom chimed.
Vanessa smiled.
“Too late.”
Ryan’s phone began buzzing.
Account alerts.
His Cole Secure Systems administrator credentials had been disabled.
Then an email arrived.
EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING — CEO FITNESS REVIEW — 8:00 A.M.
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
“You reported me.”
She held up her phone.
“You came home screaming. You threw the dog-food tray. You threatened me.”
Ryan’s stomach dropped.
He had thrown the tray toward the cabinets after pulling Lily away.
Kibble struck Vanessa’s clothes.
The metal tray had landed near her feet.
Reckless.
Angry.
Useful to her.
Headlights appeared outside.
Police.
May you like
Vanessa had called first.
And Ryan realized the conspiracy had been waiting for him to lose control.
