Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Offer

Vanessa asked to negotiate.
Not through divorce counsel.
Through her criminal attorney.
The offer was simple.
She would provide evidence against Mark.
In return, Ryan would support a favorable property settlement and tell prosecutors he did not oppose leniency.
Ryan laughed when Helen explained it.
“She abused Lily.”
“I know.”
“She stole from Lily.”
“I know.”
“She wants me to pay her?”
“She wants leverage.”
Ryan stood.
“No.”
Helen remained calm.
“You should hear what she has.”
“No.”
“Ryan.”
“She made my daughter eat from a dog bowl.”
“She tried to force her toward it.”
He stared at Helen.
Helen did not blink.
“Precision matters.”
Ryan hated that sentence too.
But he attended the meeting.
Vanessa sat across a conference table.
For the first time since he had known her, she wore no makeup.
Ryan felt nothing.
That surprised him.
She began.
“Mark planned to remove you from the company.”
“I know.”
“He used me.”
“You volunteered.”
Her jaw tightened.
“I did things I regret.”
“Name one.”
She looked at him.
“The kitchen.”
“Which day?”
The question landed.
Vanessa looked away.
Ryan continued.
“The dog bowl? The dark laundry room? Taking Lily’s food? Breaking dishes and blaming her? Telling her I didn’t want to come home?”
“I never intended for it to go that far.”
“Then where did you intend it to go?”
Silence.
“Until I signed?”
“Yes.”
Ryan felt sick.
“You wanted me guilty enough to sign whatever Mark put in front of me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mark said once the financing closed, he could move assets into Graybridge.”
“You owned Graybridge.”
“He controlled it.”
“You were beneficiary.”
“I was supposed to receive ten million.”
Ryan leaned back.
There it was.
Not love.
Not desperation.
Ten million dollars.
“And after you got it?”
“I was leaving him.”
Ryan almost smiled.
“Did he know?”
“No.”
That explained why Vanessa had kept backups.
She had been betraying Mark while helping him betray Ryan.
“What was supposed to happen when I came home from Denver?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Fear.
Real this time.
“I wouldn’t do it.”
“Do what?”
“Mark wanted Lily taken to an emergency clinic.”
Ryan’s blood chilled.
“For what?”
“He wanted me to call you and say she hurt herself during a violent episode.”
Ryan’s chair moved backward.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“What was supposed to happen?”
Vanessa began crying.
Ryan felt no sympathy.
“Answer.”
“She was supposed to have a bruise.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Mark said it could look like she fell.”
Ryan stood.
Helen said, “Ryan.”
He stayed standing.
Vanessa rushed on.
“I told him no. That’s why he was angry.”
“So instead you dragged her toward dog food?”
Vanessa covered her face.
“I lost control.”
Ryan stared at her.
For months Vanessa had manufactured Lily’s distress.
But she was claiming there was one boundary she would not cross.
Maybe true.
Maybe another manipulation.
“What evidence do you have against Mark?”
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“A recording.”
She placed a small flash drive on the table.
“Of what?”
“Mark explaining Graybridge.”
“Anything about Lily?”
“Yes.”
Ryan sat.
Helen inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
Audio played.
Mark’s voice:
Once the clinic reports an acute incident, Ryan flies back furious. Rowe recommends leave. Board acts. Incapacity documents activate if Ryan spirals.
Vanessa:
And Lily?
Mark:
Nothing permanent.
Vanessa:
What does that mean?
Mark:
It means stop asking questions you don’t need answered.
Ryan’s stomach turned.
Then Vanessa’s voice:
I won’t let you hurt her.
Mark laughed.
You’ve been hurting her for months.
The recording stopped.
Vanessa whispered, “That’s when I realized what we had become.”
Ryan looked at her.
“No.”
She blinked.
“You realized what you had become when Mark asked you to do something that frightened you. Lily had already known what you were.”
Vanessa flinched.
Ryan stood again.
“I won’t help you avoid consequences.”
“Then I keep the rest.”
Helen’s eyes narrowed.
“What rest?”
Vanessa looked directly at Ryan.
“The proof Mark stole the money.”
“We have proof.”
“No.”
“You have transfers.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“I have his ledger.”
Ryan stopped.
“What ledger?”
“Every shell company. Every payment. Every investor he paid for votes.”
“Where?”
“A place Mark doesn’t know.”
Ryan studied her.
“What do you want?”
“The condo.”
“Purchased partly with stolen money from Lily?”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“Then equivalent value.”
“No.”
“Five million.”
Ryan laughed.
“You think this is a negotiation about price?”
“I think you want your company back.”
Ryan looked through the glass wall at the city below.
Cole Secure Systems employed eight hundred people.
Mark had corrupted vendors, financial accounts and board relationships.
The ledger could end everything.
Vanessa knew it.
Helen asked, “Would you turn it over pursuant to a cooperation agreement with prosecutors?”
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“I’m talking to my husband.”
Ryan corrected her.
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Then lose the company.”
Ryan walked toward the door.
“Ryan,” Helen warned.
He stopped.
Vanessa said, “Mark has enough votes to remove you permanently next week.”
Ryan looked back.
“How?”
“Graybridge isn’t his only hidden block.”
“What else?”
Vanessa smiled.
“You should ask Evelyn Shaw who paid off her brother’s debt.”
Ryan froze.
The board chair.
Vanessa had just accused the one person Ryan still believed was neutral.
May you like
And if she was telling the truth, Mark did not merely have influence.
He had the board.
