Chapter 10 - Mother and Daughter

Emma saw Laura the next morning.

A child therapist prepared both of them.

No dramatic surprise.

No adult unloading secrets onto a seven-year-old.

Ryan waited in the adjoining room.

He heard Emma’s footsteps stop.

Then silence.

“Mom?”

Laura began crying.

“Hi, baby.”

Emma did not run immediately.

That hurt Ryan to hear.

Children remembered abandonment even when adults gave it better names.

“Where were you?”

Laura knelt.

“I was away because I was scared and made some wrong choices.”

“Did you not want me?”

“Oh, Emma.”

Laura’s voice broke.

“I wanted you every day.”

“Then why didn’t you come?”

The therapist let Laura answer simply.

“I thought staying away would keep you safe. I was wrong to stay away so long.”

Emma looked down.

“Vanessa said you left us.”

“I know.”

“Dad thought so too.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Laura answered:

“Dad was told things that weren’t true.”

Emma frowned.

“Were you mad at him?”

“Yes.”

“Are you still?”

Laura glanced toward the open doorway where Ryan stood.

“Sometimes.”

Ryan almost smiled.

Emma considered that.

Then stepped forward.

Laura opened her arms.

Emma entered them.

The sound Laura made was half sob, half breath.

Ryan looked away.

That reunion did not solve anything.

It began something.

An hour later reality returned.

Hale Alpine’s board convened.

Miles entered with three directors supporting administrative suspension.

Ryan entered with Rachel.

Then Laura walked in.

Miles stopped.

The expression lasted less than a second.

But everyone saw it.

“Laura,” Susan Bell whispered.

Miles recovered.

“This is highly inappropriate.”

Laura sat.

“So was stealing three million dollars in my name.”

Silence.

Miles looked at counsel.

Ryan said calmly:

“Continue the meeting.”

Miles presented his motion.

Ryan’s domestic protection order.

Press reports.

His “erratic accusations.”

The reopened missing-person investigation.

“Shareholders deserve stable leadership.”

Susan interrupted.

“Before we discuss Ryan, explain your ownership of Summit Crest.”

Miles’s face changed.

Rachel distributed the operating agreement.

Miles attacked authenticity.

Laura said:

“I received that copy directly from Summit Crest’s formation attorney after requesting records as trustee counsel.”

Miles stared.

“You had no authority.”

“I had enough to get a copy before you removed my access.”

Maya presented bank tracing.

Hale Alpine funds to Alpine Restoration.

Alpine Restoration to Summit Crest.

Summit Crest ownership tied to Miles, Vanessa, Dorsey.

Director Steven Boyd leaned back.

“Is this true?”

Miles said:

“These were lawful investment structures.”

“With company money?” Susan asked.

“Intercompany consulting advances.”

“No agreements exist.”

“They may have been lost.”

Ryan almost laughed.

The board had heard enough.

Susan moved to suspend Miles pending independent investigation.

Four directors voted yes.

Two no.

Miles was suspended.

Power reversed.

For approximately twenty minutes.

Then Hale Alpine’s lender called.

The fraud allegations triggered a covenant requiring temporary restriction on extraordinary spending and acquisitions.

Projects froze.

Contractors panicked.

The company’s credit line remained open for payroll and ordinary operations but expansion stopped.

Miles had poisoned the structure deeply enough that removing him did not remove the damage.

Then Vanessa appeared at the courthouse for the protection-order hearing.

Mrs. Parker testified.

Her full video played.

Vanessa throwing snow.

Demanding the key.

Ryan arriving.

Pulling her away.

The judge dissolved Vanessa’s temporary protection order against Ryan after finding insufficient evidence that Ryan posed an ongoing threat.

But the judge also warned both parties to avoid contact.

Vanessa left the courtroom surrounded by cameras.

Reporters asked whether she had abused Emma.

Her lawyer denied it.

Vanessa looked directly at Ryan.

“You think Laura coming back saves you?”

Ryan did not answer.

She smiled faintly.

Then said loud enough only for him to hear:

“Ask her what she signed before she ran.”

Laura, several feet away, went pale.

Ryan saw it.

Another secret.

Outside the courthouse he turned to her.

“What did you sign?”

Laura looked away.

“Laura.”

She closed her eyes.

“The East Ridge consent.”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

“Miles put it in front of me the night before I left.”

“You approved the sale?”

“I thought I was signing an acknowledgment that protected Emma’s trust.”

“Did you read it?”

Her silence answered.

Ryan felt anger explode.

“You had been accusing everyone of forged paperwork, and you signed something without reading it?”

“I was terrified.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

Laura’s voice sharpened.

“It’s my failure.”

Ryan walked away.

Another careless signature.

Another consequence.

Rachel reviewed the document.

Laura’s signature appeared genuine.

If valid, the trust now had one of the required parental consents.

Miles’s suspension did not automatically invalidate it.

They still had to prove fraud.

And the East Ridge court hearing was in forty-eight hours.
