Chapter 14 - The Missing First DriveOlivia had made two evidence drives.

Maria remembered now.
“One black.”
“One silver.”
The police had recovered the black drive from the boathouse.
“What was on the silver one?” Daniel asked.
“I don’t know.”
“When did you last see it?”
“Hospital.”
Daniel went still.
“Olivia had evidence in the hospital?”
Maria nodded.
“She asked me to bring her laptop bag.”
Daniel remembered the bag.
Claire had taken it home after Olivia died.
She said she was organizing personal belongings.
Daniel had thanked her.
The silver drive disappeared.
Claire’s attorney claimed she never saw it.
Arthur denied knowing it existed.
Thomas denied too.
Then investigators traced the anonymous email.
It came from a cybersecurity consultant named Julian Cross.
Olivia had hired him privately.
Julian met Daniel at Caroline’s office.
“I helped her create redundant archives.”
“Why didn’t you come forward?”
“She instructed me not to unless someone accessed a dead-man storage account.”
“Someone did?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Who?”
“Credentials belonging to Thomas Reed.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Julian displayed logs.
Thomas accessed an encrypted archive Olivia had created.
He downloaded one file.
Then attempted deletion.
“What file?”
“A directory index for the silver drive.”
“Does the archive contain a copy?”
“Partial.”
The partial files revealed something unexpected.
Olivia had not only investigated financial fraud.
She had investigated her own medical privacy.
Someone inside Whitmore Holdings accessed her insurance claims and treatment schedules without authorization.
Daniel’s skin went cold.
“Why?”
Julian opened an email.
Claire to Thomas:
Need dates she’ll be inpatient. Easier to manage D when she’s unavailable.
Daniel stared.
They had used Olivia’s medical schedule to time corporate actions.
Board approvals.
Vendor transfers.
Trust amendments.
Whenever she was hospitalized.
Not causing illness.
Exploiting it.
Daniel’s hands shook.
Another email from Thomas:
She asked compliance about access. Kill the audit request before it escalates.
“Kill” meant cancel.
Still, seeing the word beside Olivia’s medical records made Daniel sick.
Then Julian showed them the final index.
A video file existed on the silver drive.
Filename:
ARTHUR_CLAIRE_T_REED_BOATHOUSE.mp4
The photograph had been a still from it.
Julian had no full copy.
Who did?
Thomas probably downloaded the index searching for it.
Claire might have taken the physical drive after Olivia died.
Or Arthur.
Caroline asked:
“What would the video prove?”
Julian shook his head.
“Olivia told me it was the conversation that made her change her estate plan.”
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
The trust provision protecting Emma and Noah.
The audit trigger.
Everything might have begun after that conversation.
Maria looked at him.
“Olivia came back from the boathouse crying once.”
“When?”
“About eight months before she died.”
“What did she say?”
Maria thought.
“She said, ‘They finally said it out loud.’”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
The hunt for the silver drive began.
Police searched Claire’s apartment.
Nothing.
Arthur’s office.
Nothing.
Thomas’s properties.
Nothing.
Then Emma provided another child-sized clue.
“Grandpa has Mom’s silver thing.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
“At Christmas.”
“Which Christmas?”
“The one Mom was sick.”
“What did you see?”
“Grandpa put shiny thing in his coat.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Where?”
“Boathouse.”
She had been five.
Children saw more than adults remembered.
Arthur had taken the drive.
Why had he not destroyed it?
Insurance.
Always insurance.
Daniel called his father.
No answer.
Caroline contacted Arthur’s lawyer.
Twenty minutes later came a reply.
Arthur would produce the silver drive.
Under one condition.
Daniel had to meet him privately first.
Caroline said no.
Daniel agreed with her.
No secret meetings.
Arthur’s lawyer responded:
Then no drive.
Daniel stared at the message.
Old Daniel would have gone.
Alone.
Family conversation.
Private resolution.
Instead he wrote:
Produce it to law enforcement or explain in court why you withheld evidence.
Three hours later, Arthur surrendered the drive to federal investigators.
Daniel felt a small, strange victory.
Not over his father.
Over his own reflex.
The forensic team restored the video.
Everyone gathered the next morning.
Arthur appeared first on screen.
Claire.
Thomas.
Olivia’s hidden camera watched from the boathouse shelf.
Arthur’s voice:
“We have one option left.”
Claire:
“No.”
Thomas:
“If she audits North Harbor, lenders will find everything.”
Arthur:
“Then Olivia cannot remain trustee.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Claire said:
“How do you remove her?”
May you like
Arthur answered:
“Make Daniel believe she’s too sick to manage anything.”
