Chapter 9 - The Second Petition

Victoria changed strategy.
If she could not immediately remove Daniel as trustee through neglect allegations, she would attack his competence.
Her lawyers filed papers arguing Daniel had recklessly approved unauthorized trust transactions.
The $4.2 million transfer bearing his signature became evidence.
Rebecca stared at the filing.
“She’s using her own fraud to prove you are unfit.”
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
“Can she?”
“If you negligently approved the transaction, it is relevant.”
“Even if she engineered it?”
“Yes.”
He hated courts.
They separated moral outrage from legal elements.
Daniel wanted Victoria’s misconduct to erase his errors.
Law did not work that way.
Neither did life.
The neutral co-trustee remained in place.
Victoria demanded Daniel be removed permanently.
Rebecca prepared defenses.
Daniel prepared for another deposition.
Meanwhile, Adrian disappeared.
Not dramatically.
He simply failed to arrive for a scheduled interview.
His apartment was empty.
His passport records showed no legal departure.
His phone went dark.
Federal investigators issued alerts.
Daniel immediately suspected Victoria.
She denied contact.
Then Maria found something.
Months of deleted guest-garage logs restored from backups.
Adrian had stored boxes at the mansion.
Not in Victoria’s suite.
In the old wine cellar.
Daniel and law enforcement searched.
Behind an unused rack were six banker’s boxes.
Crestwell invoices.
Vendor contracts.
Trust records.
And handwritten notes.
Victoria’s handwriting.
One page contained calculations:
24 + 30 = 54
Below:
Replace Elaine.
Remove D.
NorthBridge vote.
A second page:
Adrian CEO.
V chair.
Owen GC.
Daniel stared.
A government of thieves written on yellow paper.
But the most important box contained medical records.
Sophie’s.
Copies of pulmonology notes.
Pharmacy schedules.
Emergency plans.
Victoria had mapped the child’s vulnerability.
Daniel had to leave the room.
Outside, he leaned against the cellar wall.
Rebecca followed.
“She studied when Sophie would be at risk.”
“Yes.”
He punched nothing.
Shouted at no one.
He simply stood there shaking.
“I let her live here.”
“You trusted your sister.”
“I ignored signs.”
“Yes.”
He looked at Rebecca.
“You don’t soften anything.”
“You have enough people who did that.”
The records showed Victoria had noted nights Daniel traveled.
She targeted medication removal before those periods.
That way any episode could be attributed to his absence and household mismanagement.
Maria said:
“That is why she always asked when you were coming home.”
Daniel remembered.
Victoria appearing helpful.
Offering to stay with Sophie.
Suggesting Maria take evenings off.
Every kindness looked contaminated now.
The police uncovered another important fact.
Victoria had not discarded the older stolen medication.
She had given it to Adrian.
Text:
VICTORIA: Dispose of these.
ADRIAN: Why me?
VICTORIA: Because Maria counts everything.
ADRIAN: You said you were only documenting gaps.
VICTORIA: I am.
ADRIAN: This is too far.
VICTORIA: Then stop benefiting.
Adrian understood.
He objected.
But he continued.
That distinction would matter later.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Adrian.
“Daniel.”
“Where are you?”
“I need a deal.”
“You need a lawyer.”
“I have evidence.”
“Then give it to prosecutors.”
“I need protection first.”
“From Victoria?”
Silence.
Daniel frowned.
“Adrian?”
“Victoria is not the person I’m afraid of.”
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“Who?”
Adrian whispered:
“Owen.”
Daniel stared.
“Owen came to me.”
“He came because we told him to.”
Daniel went cold.
“What?”
“The whole confession was staged.”
Rebecca moved closer.
Daniel put the call on speaker.
Adrian continued:
“Owen was supposed to find out what you knew.”
“Then why tell me about the plan?”
“Because he gave you enough truth to make you trust him.”
Daniel remembered.
Owen arriving frightened.
Claiming Adrian wanted documents destroyed.
“He lied.”
“Yes.”
“Where is he now?”
“I don’t know.”
“What is he protecting?”
Adrian breathed heavily.
“The original Thomas Ashford memorandum.”
“I know about it.”
“No.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“You know the version Owen wanted you to know about.”
Daniel stopped.
“There are two memoranda.”
One said Thomas wanted Victoria removed as successor trustee.
The second, Adrian claimed, explained why.

And it was not only about Victoria.
It named Owen Kessler.
