Chapter 14 - The Missing Minutes

The original recording lasted forty-seven minutes.

Rebecca’s public version lasted ninety-three seconds.

Nathan called Elena.

She came to the planetarium.

They listened together.

The argument was painful.

Nathan hated hearing himself.

He had accused Elena of destroying Asterion.

Elena had accused him of trusting Gavin more than her.

Then came the line Rebecca released.

“If you take Sophie away from me, I will destroy you.”

Silence followed.

Then Nathan’s voice again.

“No. That’s not what I mean.”

Elena replied, “Then what do you mean?”

“I’ll destroy us fighting you. I know myself. I’m angry enough to burn everything down just to keep Sophie close, and that scares me.”

Recorded Nathan began crying.

“I need to leave before I say something worse.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“Go upstairs.”

“No. Sophie’s upstairs.”

Another pause.

“I’m calling Mara. I’m not staying in this house tonight.”

Nathan stopped the recording.

He could barely look at Elena.

“I forgot that.”

“You were drugged later that night.”

“Not during this.”

“No.”

Nathan forced himself to continue.

The recording captured Rebecca entering twenty minutes later.

Her voice was clear.

“Elena?”

“What are you doing here?”

“Nathan called Gavin.”

“No, he didn’t.”

“Gavin says Nathan has approved the Northlight restructuring.”

“You’re lying.”

Then Rebecca said:

“If you expose us, I can make Nathan’s threat sound like a confession.”

Elena and Nathan stared at each other.

There it was.

Premeditation.

The manipulation had begun before Elena vanished.

Keene delivered the full recording to prosecutors and family court.

Rebecca’s credibility weakened.

But she retaliated from detention.

Through her lawyer she released internal emails proving Elena had initially approved three Northlight invoices despite knowing supporting documentation was incomplete.

Elena admitted it publicly.

“I made decisions I was ashamed of,” she told investigators. “Rebecca used my shame to control me.”

Nathan watched her interview.

For the first time, he understood that Elena’s disappearance had not been one decision.

It had been hundreds.

Fear.

Secrecy.

Pride.

Guilt.

Each reasonable for five minutes.

Together catastrophic.

Sophie began therapy with a child psychologist selected independently by the court.

Nathan hated needing court approval for parts of his own daughter’s life.

But he accepted it.

Rebecca’s adoption case moved forward.

The fraudulent Pike affidavit became central.

The real Warren Pike was still missing.

Prosecutors believed he had discovered Rebecca had stolen his identity.

Then Jonah called.

“I found something.”

Nathan drove to Hart Ridge with Elena.

Jonah showed them an old backup server.

“Pike came here.”

“When?”

“Two months before Rebecca filed the adoption.”

Camera footage showed Warren entering the observatory.

He left a document envelope behind a ventilation panel.

Inside was a notarized statement.

I, Warren Pike, did not conduct any search for Elena Hale in connection with Rebecca Hale’s adoption petition. Any affidavit bearing my name stating otherwise is fraudulent.

Elena gasped.

“This destroys Rebecca’s adoption case.”

Jonah shook his head.

“There’s more.”

Pike wrote that he had confronted Rebecca.

He believed she intended to use the fraudulent adoption to gain influence over Sophie’s future trust.

He also recorded their conversation.

The file was on a microSD card attached to the statement.

Nathan inserted it.

Rebecca’s voice:

“You have no idea what happens if Elena comes back.”

Pike:

“Then tell me.”

Rebecca:

“Nathan loses his company. Elena goes to prison. Sophie loses both parents.”

Pike:

“And you become what?”

A pause.

Rebecca answered:

“The only person left who can keep the family intact.”

Nathan whispered, “That’s how she saw herself.”

Elena looked at him.

“No. That’s how she justified herself.”

The audio continued.

Pike said, “I’m going to the court.”

Rebecca’s response was quiet.

“No, Warren. You’re not.”

The recording ended.

Jonah swallowed.

“Pike disappeared the next morning.”

Nathan stared at the speaker.

Rebecca was already facing kidnapping, fraud, obstruction, and conspiracy allegations.

Now there was a missing witness.

And one person might know where he was.

Gavin.
