Chapter 2 - The First Recording

Daniel locked the kitchen doors.

It was irrational.

No one was trying to break into the mansion.

But after watching Vanessa disable the security system with a device he had never seen, locking a door felt like the only decision he could still control.

“Give me the fob.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You already took it.”

Daniel stared at the small black device in his palm.

“Where did you get it?”

“Rachel gave it to me.”

Elena laughed once.

There was no humor in the sound.

“Rachel wouldn’t have given Vanessa the code to her own phone.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.

Daniel noticed.

“Elena, what are you saying?”

Elena touched her swollen cheek.

“I am saying your wife stopped trusting her sister six months before she died.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“And I’m saying this employee has spent eighteen months poisoning Lily against her own family.”

“Elena is family,” Lily whispered.

Vanessa looked at the child.

That tiny glance was enough.

Lily moved behind Daniel.

His shame deepened.

He crouched.

“Did Aunt Vanessa hit you?”

Lily nodded.

“Before today?”

Silence.

Daniel felt the answer before he heard it.

“Yes.”

His face tightened.

“How many times?”

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa exploded.

“That is ridiculous! Children say things when adults lead them.”

“No one led me!” Lily shouted.

Daniel stood.

“Enough.”

He called his security company using a number printed on the wall panel. After twenty minutes with a technician, he learned something that made his blood run cold.

The mansion had two security networks.

The first was the modern system Daniel knew.

The second was an older isolated network registered under Rachel Carter’s name.

“Can you access it?” Daniel asked.

“Not directly,” the technician said. “The local hub appears to have been disabled, but there was an off-site archival service attached to several cameras.”

“Where?”

“I can’t see the storage provider. Whoever configured it masked the destination.”

Elena said, “Rachel did.”

Daniel ended the call.

“You knew about this?”

“Only that it existed.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elena’s eyes flashed.

“Because Rachel asked me not to.”

Daniel flinched.

“She was my wife.”

“And she was afraid.”

“Of me?”

Elena hesitated.

Vanessa immediately said, “There. You hear this? She’s turning Rachel against you now that Rachel can’t defend herself.”

Elena ignored her.

“She wasn’t afraid of you hurting her.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“What was she afraid of?”

“Of what you might do if you discovered the truth too early.”

Daniel stared.

The words made no sense.

Before he could demand more, the kitchen camera emitted a faint beep.

The wall monitor flickered.

A frozen image appeared.

Lily at the island.

Vanessa standing behind her.

The technician had managed to restore thirty-seven minutes from a local emergency cache.

Daniel pressed play.

He watched Vanessa seize the flour bag.

Watched the white cloud fall.

Watched Lily recoil.

Watched Vanessa grab her.

Then came the first slap.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

The second slap made him look away.

“Keep watching,” Elena said.

He forced himself.

Elena entered.

Protected Lily.

Then Daniel arrived.

He watched Vanessa point.

He watched himself cross the kitchen.

He watched himself hit Elena.

The sound from the recording was even worse than Daniel remembered.

He stopped the video.

No one spoke.

Finally, Daniel turned to Elena.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Yes.”

He waited.

She did not make his apology easier.

“I had no right.”

“No.”

Lily began crying again.

Daniel knelt in front of her.

“I should have listened to you.”

“You didn’t even ask me.”

The sentence hit harder than Elena’s silence.

Daniel bowed his head.

“No. I didn’t.”

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

“This spectacle is finished.”

Daniel rose.

“You’re not leaving.”

“Try stopping me.”

“I want your phone.”

“You have no right.”

“I want every access code you have to this house.”

“You are behaving like a lunatic.”

“And you hit my daughter.”

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“One slap.”

“Two.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the monitor.

Daniel continued.

“And according to Lily, it wasn’t the first time.”

“That housekeeper has manipulated her.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Say my name.”

“What?”

“You’ve known me eleven years. Say my name.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“Elena.”

“Good. Because you will remember it when I testify.”

Vanessa went still.

Daniel saw fear again.

Not fear of child-abuse allegations.

Something larger.

His phone suddenly buzzed.

An email notification.

Then another.

Then twelve more.

His chief of staff called.

Daniel answered.

“Mark?”

“Daniel, don’t speak to anyone.”

“What happened?”

“There’s a video circulating.”

Daniel looked at the camera footage.

“What video?”

“Ten seconds. You hitting Elena.”

His stomach dropped.

“Where?”

“Local press. Social media. Someone sent it anonymously to two reporters.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She smiled faintly.

The leaked clip showed only his assault.

Nothing before it.

No flour.

No Vanessa hitting Lily.

No accusation.

Just Daniel Carter, prominent property developer, striking his housekeeper.

“Daniel?” Mark said. “The company board wants an emergency call.”

Vanessa walked toward the doorway.

This time Daniel did not stop her.

She paused beside him.

“You wanted to know what Rachel was afraid of?”

Daniel turned.

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“She was afraid you would destroy yourself trying to save everyone.”

Then she left.

Twenty minutes later, another email arrived.

This one had no sender name.

Only a subject line.

RACHEL CARTER — ARCHIVE 01.

Daniel opened the attached video.

His dead wife appeared on the screen.

Pale.

Tired.

May you like

Very much alive.

“If you’re watching this,” Rachel said, “Vanessa has finally made her move.”
