Chapter 10 - What Daniel Signed

Forensic analyst Dr. Priya Shah reconstructed Daniel’s electronic approvals.

The result was humiliating.

Marcus had not technically hacked Daniel’s account.

He had exploited Daniel’s habits.

At least nine times, Marcus sent legitimate board packages containing small inserted amendments.

Daniel approved seven without opening every attachment.

Vanessa supplied his authentication device on five occasions.

Three approvals occurred while Daniel was with Lily.

One while Daniel was on the telephone with a hospital about Grace’s sister.

One during a charity dinner.

Marcus knew when Daniel was distracted.

Vanessa created the distractions.

“You signed them,” Priya said.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“The documents were manipulated and misleading. But your authentication is real.”

“So I helped them steal from me.”

Sarah answered.

“You were deceived.”

“I authenticated them.”

“Both facts can be true.”

Daniel looked at the transaction history.

“I blamed everyone around me for not warning me.”

Sarah said nothing.

“I should have read.”

“Yes.”

No comfort.

He appreciated that.

The worst document was the amended Morrow exclusivity agreement.

Its terms were unfavorable but not obviously fraudulent.

Daniel had approved it.

That gave Morrow a genuine legal argument.

“We can prove Marcus concealed the amendment,” Sarah said, “but litigation could take months.”

“How long before the lender acts?”

“Covenant review is in eleven days.”

“And if Caldwell fails?”

“They can increase rates, restrict distributions, and potentially demand a restructuring plan.”

Daniel looked toward Blackthorne on a wall map.

“They created a crisis and made the land sale look like the cure.”

“Yes.”

At home, Vanessa sent another message through counsel.

She wanted access to personal belongings at Blackthorne.

Legally, she was still Daniel’s wife.

Sarah arranged supervised access.

Vanessa arrived in a black sedan at three o’clock.

Daniel stayed in the library.

He did not trust himself.

Lily was off the property with Caroline.

Grace remained with a deputy.

Vanessa walked through the house like a guest who still believed she owned it.

She entered the bedroom she had shared with Daniel.

Thirty minutes later, she came downstairs carrying two suitcases.

She paused outside the library.

“Can I speak to him?”

Sarah said, “Through counsel.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

Against Sarah’s advice, he stepped into the hall.

Vanessa looked thinner.

For one dangerous second, she looked like the woman he remembered.

“I never wanted Lily hurt.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You locked her in a pen.”

“I was angry.”

“You threatened her.”

“She stole from me.”

“She was eight.”

Vanessa looked away.

“I never struck her.”

“You cracked a crop beside her head.”

“And you know exactly why I didn’t hit her.”

Daniel stared.

“That is your defense?”

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“It’s the one truth nobody wants.”

“You want credit because you terrorized her carefully?”

Vanessa flinched.

Sarah stepped forward.

“This conversation is over.”

Vanessa ignored her.

“Marcus said we needed the key.”

Daniel felt himself harden.

“Why?”

“Because the box had records.”

“We found them.”

“I know.”

“For how long were you sleeping with him?”

Vanessa’s face went still.

That was answer enough.

Daniel swallowed.

“How long?”

“Daniel.”

“How long?”

“Before we married.”

Grace inhaled sharply.

Daniel felt something inside him become quiet.

Not broken.

Finished.

Vanessa continued.

“It ended.”

“When?”

“After the wedding.”

“Then started again.”

She did not deny it.

Daniel laughed softly.

“My wife and my CFO.”

“Marcus was never what you think.”

“What do I think?”

“That I loved him.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you love me?”

Vanessa looked at him.

Too long.

Sarah said, “Daniel.”

He raised a hand.

Vanessa whispered, “Eventually.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

She continued.

“That was the problem.”

“The problem?”

“I was supposed to make you lose everything. Then you made it complicated.”

“You married me to destroy me.”

“At first.”

Grace turned away.

Daniel felt nauseated.

Vanessa took one step toward him.

“I stopped wanting the company.”

“You stole millions.”

“Marcus controlled that money.”

“Your company received nearly two million.”

“My company was his idea.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everything was someone else’s idea.”

Her face hardened.

“You think your family is innocent?”

“My father reported a thief.”

“Your father took our farm.”

“Your father stole his employees’ retirement money.”

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound cracked through the hall.

Everyone froze.

Daniel did not move.

Vanessa stared at her own hand.

Sarah spoke first.

“Deputy.”

Vanessa backed away.

Daniel touched his cheek once.

“You should leave.”

Tears stood in Vanessa’s eyes.

“You always get to be righteous.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice was calm.

“That’s what I’m finally learning.”

Vanessa was escorted out.

As her car reached the gates, Sarah’s phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then looked at Daniel.

“Neal Ross just resigned from the board.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Good.”

“No.”

Sarah’s expression darkened.

“He also filed an affidavit.”

May you like

“About what?”

“He claims the entire Morrow plan was your idea.”
