Chapter 7 - Laura’s Backup

The safe-deposit box contained less than Daniel remembered.

Laura’s wedding ring.

Two handwritten letters for Emily.

A flash drive labeled FAMILY PHOTOS.

A sealed envelope addressed to Daniel.

And a small metal card engraved with twenty-four characters.

Owen Pike examined a photograph of the card.

“That’s it.”

Daniel sat in the bank’s private viewing room with Helen.

His hands shook as he turned the metal card over.

Laura had been dead four years.

She was still protecting their daughter.

The thought nearly broke him.

Helen noticed the unopened envelope.

“You’ve never read that?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I forgot it was here.”

“Maybe now isn’t the time.”

He agreed.

They took only the recovery key.

By noon, Owen had accessed the emergency archive under police supervision.

Detective Ruiz stood behind him.

Daniel and Helen watched from the opposite side of the technical lab.

The archive showed one event from the night of the pool incident.

Twenty-seven minutes.

Owen looked at Daniel.

“Ready?”

“No.”

Owen pressed play anyway.

The image appeared.

The hidden camera angle captured most of the bathroom entrance and a sliver of the pool deck.

Timestamp: 8:34 p.m.

Vanessa entered first.

Richard followed.

Daniel’s hands curled against the chair.

Richard knelt beside the water-heater control panel.

Vanessa stood watch.

The audio hissed, but voices were audible.

“You said this would look mechanical,” Vanessa whispered.

“It will.”

Richard opened the service panel.

“You changed the temperature limit?”

“Yes.”

“And the exhaust?”

“I can shut it from outside.”

Richard stood.

He looked terrified.

“Vanessa, we could stop.”

She stared at him.

“After everything we’ve done?”

“I meant the shares. The documents. Not this.”

“The bank questioned the transfer.”

“We can find another way.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice was perfectly calm.

“If she survives, none of it works.”

Daniel stood so abruptly his chair struck the wall.

Ruiz reached toward him.

“Daniel.”

He shook his head.

On screen, Richard rubbed his forehead.

“She’s eight.”

Vanessa replied, “And Daniel will never sign those shares away while she’s alive.”

Helen covered her mouth.

The video continued.

Emily appeared eleven minutes later wearing pajamas beneath a robe.

Vanessa smiled.

“Sweetheart, I think your goggles are in the bathroom.”

Emily walked inside.

Richard stepped backward.

Vanessa touched the exterior control.

The door locked.

Emily turned immediately.

Her small hand pulled the handle.

Vanessa switched maintenance mode on.

Richard whispered, “Jesus.”

Vanessa said, “Turn the exhaust off.”

Richard did not move.

Vanessa did it herself.

Daniel could not watch the next minutes.

But he forced himself.

Emily pounding.

Steam thickening.

Richard pacing.

Vanessa watching.

Then Richard’s voice:

“What if someone hears her?”

Vanessa:

“She’ll be quiet soon.”

Clear.

Undamaged.

Exactly as Daniel remembered.

Ruiz stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at Vanessa’s frozen face on screen.

“How fast can you arrest her?”

Ruiz picked up her phone.

“This changes everything.”

Helen touched Daniel’s arm.

He barely felt it.

Richard’s statement had also changed everything.

He had objected.

Not enough to help Emily.

Not enough to stop Vanessa.

But enough to reveal a fracture.

The conspiracy was no longer a single united wall.

Ruiz spoke to prosecutors in the hallway.

Owen began copying the archive under forensic protocol.

Daniel remained seated.

The screen still showed Emily behind the glass.

He reached forward and turned it off.

Helen said, “Daniel.”

“I invited her into our house.”

“Vanessa made this choice.”

“I gave her access to Emily.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I was warned.”

Helen stayed silent.

That was why he trusted her.

She did not offer forgiveness he had not earned.

Daniel took out his phone and called Natalie.

“Is Emily there?”

“Right beside me.”

“Can I speak to her?”

Emily came on.

“Dad?”

He closed his eyes.

“We found the video.”

“Did it see?”

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“So people will believe me now?”

Daniel could not answer for several seconds.

“They should have believed you before.”

Emily was quiet.

Then she said, “Okay.”

Not victory.

Not relief.

Just okay.

Ruiz returned.

“Officers are going to Vanessa’s hotel.”

“And Richard?”

“His residence and attorney’s office.”

Daniel stood.

“Are you charging both?”

“Attempted murder conspiracy is being reviewed. We also have fraud warrants developing.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means this is bigger than the pool.”

Daniel looked at Helen.

They already knew.

An hour later, Ruiz received two calls.

Vanessa had left her hotel before officers arrived.

Richard was not at home.

Their lawyers claimed not to know where either client was.

“They ran,” Daniel said.

Ruiz shook her head.

“Maybe.”

At 4:18 p.m., Vanessa’s attorney issued a statement.

His client was not fleeing.

She was “temporarily unavailable due to credible threats generated by reckless public accusations.”

Richard’s attorney issued a similar statement.

Then Maya called.

Her voice was urgent.

“I found another document.”

“What?”

“A scanned estate memo in the metadata from Vanessa’s tablet.”

Daniel’s pulse tightened.

“She deleted it, but the sync history retained the filename.”

“What filename?”

Maya read it.

SUCCESSION OPTIONS — EM / DM

Emily Mercer.

Daniel Mercer.

Helen whispered, “No.”

Maya continued.

“The file was created the same week Blue Ember was formed.”

Daniel felt a slow horror spread through him.

“Can you recover it?”

“Not from what I have. But there may be a copy somewhere else.”

Ruiz looked at Daniel.

“We need that document.”

Daniel already understood why.

The pool video proved Vanessa had intended to kill Emily.

But the succession memo might prove Emily was never the final target.

That night, Daniel returned to Natalie’s house under police escort.

He found Emily asleep.

He stood in her doorway for several minutes.

Then his phone lit up.

A message from Richard.

May you like

Only five words.

Vanessa was going to kill you.
