Chapter 4 - The Board Chooses

The emergency board meeting began at eight the next morning.
David had slept less than two hours.
Noah remained at the family apartment overlooking Central Park with a child-care professional recommended by Detective Park.
Celeste arrived ten minutes late.
She wore gray.
No visible anger.
No shame.
Her attorney accompanied her.
The five independent board members sat between the siblings like judges.
Robert Langford opened the meeting.
“The purpose is immediate risk containment.”
David placed copies of the S-14 recording transcript on the table.
“Our immediate risk is twenty-one million dollars in suspicious payments.”
Celeste replied, “Our immediate risk is a chief executive who assaulted an employee.”
David did not look away.
“I did.”
Several directors shifted uncomfortably.
Celeste had expected denial.
David continued.
“Maya Torres filed a complaint. I will cooperate fully.”
Celeste smiled faintly.
“That does not make you noble.”
“No.”
Robert interrupted.
“Enough.”
Outside counsel summarized the forensic concerns.
Monarch payments.
The suspicious farewell email.
Old security footage involving Claire and Richard.
David expected the board to authorize a full investigation.
Instead Robert produced a sealed folder.
“Richard left contingency instructions.”
David stared.
“My father controlled this board from the grave?”
“He anticipated allegations from Claire.”
“What did he say?”
Robert read.
“In the event Claire Ashford or persons acting through her accuse the hotel, its officers, or the family of financial misconduct, David’s judgment must be treated as compromised by marital conflict.”
David laughed.
“She disappeared.”
Robert continued.
“If David attempts to use such allegations to seize unilateral control, he should be placed on administrative leave.”
David pushed back from the table.
“This is insane.”
Celeste folded her hands.
“Dad knew you.”
“He knew how to build traps.”
Her eyes hardened.
“You only call them traps when they close around you.”
The board voted.
Four to three.
David was temporarily suspended as chief executive pending an independent investigation.
Celeste was not made CEO.
Robert appointed the hotel’s chief financial officer, Evan Pike, interim chief.
That should have comforted David.
It didn’t.
Evan had worked under Richard for twenty-two years.
After the meeting, Celeste found David alone in the hallway.
“You should have left S-14 closed.”
“You knew what was inside.”
“I knew Claire was obsessed.”
“She said Dad stole twenty-one million dollars.”
“Claire said many things.”
“She said you lied.”
Celeste’s face tightened.
“Claire hated me.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw through her.”
“Or because she saw through you.”
Celeste stepped closer.
“You still don’t understand what she did.”
“Then explain it.”
“She married you and immediately began trying to separate you from Dad.”
David almost laughed.
“Dad despised nearly everyone I dated.”
“Claire despised him back.”
“She had reasons.”
“You did too. You still obeyed him.”
That landed.
Celeste continued.
“Claire wanted you to sell the hotel.”
“No.”
“She wanted you to leave the family.”
“She wanted boundaries.”
“She wanted control.”
David stared.
“You sound like him.”
Celeste smiled without warmth.
“Someone had to learn something from him.”
David’s phone buzzed.
Rebecca Sloan.
She had received preliminary forensic results from Claire’s farewell email.
The message had been composed on Richard’s office computer.
Not just sent from it.
A local cache contained fragments of the draft.
David looked at Celeste.
“Dad wrote Claire’s goodbye.”
Something flashed in her face.
Fear.
Then she recovered.
“Or Claire used his computer.”
“At two fourteen in the morning?”
“She had access.”
“After he was holding her wrist in S-14?”
Celeste said nothing.
David lowered his voice.
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Dad hurt her?”
“No.”
The answer came too fast.
David grabbed her arm.
Immediately he heard Noah screaming in his memory.
Maya falling.
He released Celeste.
She looked at where his hand had been.
“There he is.”
David stepped backward.
She whispered, “Dad always said pressure reveals people.”
David replied, “It revealed you hitting an eight-year-old.”
Her expression changed.
Then she walked away.
That afternoon, the first media story appeared.
HOTEL HEIR ASSAULTS HOUSEKEEPER ON SECRET SERVICE FLOOR.
The leaked clip showed only David striking Maya.
No Celeste.
No Noah being attacked.
No locked room.
David watched ten seconds of his worst decision repeat on every local channel.
Rebecca called.
“Do not make a statement yet.”
“Who leaked it?”
“We don’t know.”
David did.
Or thought he did.
Celeste.
Then another message arrived.
From Maya.
I DID NOT GIVE THEM THAT VIDEO.
David stared.
Seconds later, hotel security notified him that someone had attempted remote deletion of the three-year-old S-14 archive.
The login credentials belonged to a user account that officially should have been disabled eighteen months earlier.
May you like
Richard Ashford.
Someone was still using his dead father’s access.
