Chapter 14 - Eli’s Name in the Log

Eli was asleep when the archive supposedly opened.

Marcus knew because he had checked on him at 1:10 a.m.

Captain Elena’s night steward confirmed Eli never left the children’s suite.

Another cloned credential.

But this one used his son’s identity.

Marcus became so angry he had to leave the room.

He walked alone onto the aft deck.

The same place where he had struck Cole.

Rain had stopped.

The teak was dry.

He stared at the place where Eli had been pinned.

Someone had turned his child into a digital suspect.

Rachel joined him.

“Do not call anyone.”

“I’m learning.”

“Slowly.”

He almost smiled.

The access log showed “Eli Vale” entering the archive at 2:03 a.m.

That credential should not exist.

Children had guest cards only.

Forensics traced its creation to Thomas Vale’s old LEGACY_ADMIN account.

The creator device was located inside Aurelia.

Not remotely.

Someone aboard had done it.

Crew were locked down.

Captain Elena ordered internal interviews.

There were twenty-seven crew members.

Most had worked for Marcus for years.

The atmosphere poisoned quickly.

Suspicion moved through every corridor.

Then Grace Park, the yacht’s chief stewardess, asked to speak privately.

She had worked under Elena for nine years.

“I saw someone outside the archive.”

“When?”

“About two.”

“Who?”

Grace hesitated.

“Celia Vale.”

Marcus froze.

Adrian’s wife.

Celia had returned aboard after midnight to collect clothing from the family suite.

She claimed she left by 12:40.

Security logs supported that.

Unless they were altered.

Marcus called Adrian.

He arrived furious.

“Do not accuse my wife because someone saw a woman in a hallway.”

“I’m not accusing.”

“You dragged me through this for lying. Now Celia is next?”

“Grace saw her.”

Adrian laughed.

“Grace also works for you.”

Captain Elena’s expression hardened.

“She works for the vessel.”

Adrian ignored her.

Celia arrived with her lawyer.

She admitted returning.

She admitted staying later than she told Adrian.

Why?

“I was meeting Lauren.”

Everyone went silent.

Adrian looked destroyed.

“You what?”

Celia stared at him.

“She contacted me after I learned about the affair.”

“Why?”

“She offered evidence.”

“Of what?”

“You.”

Adrian sat down.

Celia continued.

“Lauren said you had hidden more money.”

“I didn’t.”

“I didn’t know that.”

Marcus felt the family machine turning again.

Lauren did not need to control people.

Only feed each person the fear they already had.

Celia met Lauren aboard using a crew service entrance.

Lauren was physically on Aurelia after supposedly fleeing.

“How?” Elena asked.

Celia shook her head.

“She had a crew access card.”

Cole’s system.

“What did she give you?”

“A drive.”

“Where is it?”

Celia handed it over.

It contained Northstar records.

Mostly real.

Some manipulated.

Enough to convince Celia Adrian was hiding millions.

“Did you access the archive?”

“No.”

“Did Lauren?”

“I don’t know. She left me near the service stair.”

Marcus asked, “Why lie about how long you stayed?”

Celia looked at Adrian.

“Because I was ashamed.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Welcome to the family.”

No one found it funny.

The cloned Eli credential had been created twelve minutes after Celia saw Lauren.

That was enough probable cause for law enforcement to focus harder on Lauren.

Then Rachel found a metadata anomaly.

The device that created “Eli Vale” had copied one specific file.

CHILDREN TRUST ORIGINAL STOCK CERTIFICATES.

Marcus stared.

“What can she do with scanned certificates?”

“Not transfer ownership by themselves.”

“Then why take them?”

“To fabricate documents. Support litigation. Create pressure.”

Adrian said, “Or prove something.”

Rachel looked at him.

“What?”

Adrian stared at the trust certificates.

“Dad once told me the children’s shares were not all the same class.”

Marcus frowned.

“They are Class B voting shares.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I remember him saying one certificate carried a conversion right.”

Rachel opened the trust documents.

Buried in an appendix was a clause.

Upon a “change of control event,” Eli and Ava’s Class B shares automatically converted to super-voting shares with ten votes per share for ninety days.

Thomas had built an anti-takeover mechanism into the children’s trusts.

Marcus stared.

“That would give the trusts enormous temporary power.”

Rachel nodded.

“If properly triggered.”

Whitcombe acquiring control could activate it.

So could certain recapitalizations.

Marcus understood why Lauren wanted the certificates.

If she could manipulate or suppress the conversion right, Whitcombe’s takeover path became easier.

Or if she forged a trustee consent, she could try to neutralize it.

Rachel looked at Marcus.

“The children were not incidental.”

His blood ran cold.

From the beginning, Eli and Ava’s shares were the obstacle.

The deck incident served two purposes:

Discredit Marcus as trustee.

And separate the children from him psychologically and legally if possible.

Marcus stood.

“We end this.”

Rachel said, “How?”

He looked at Adrian.

Not as CEO.

Not as controlling trustee.

As a brother he did not fully trust.

“We stop fighting each other long enough to make Lauren believe she still can.”

Adrian stared.

“That sounds like a trap.”

“It is.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No vigilante games.”

“Legal.”

She waited.

Marcus continued.

“We let Whitcombe think the family is accepting rescue capital.”

Adrian slowly understood.

“And force Lauren to surface the missing originals.”

Rachel said, “Only with law enforcement coordination.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

Evelyn arrived twenty minutes later.

When told, she said one word.

“No.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you’re risking the company.”

“You risked it privately for years.”

Her face hardened.

“I will not participate.”

Adrian stood.

“Mom.”

“No.”

Marcus stared at her.

Then Evelyn said the thing that made Chapter 16 inevitable two steps early.

“If you move against Whitcombe publicly, I will vote my ten percent against you.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

Adrian whispered, “Mom.”

Evelyn continued.

“I will not let you destroy what remains because of your pride.”

Marcus looked at his mother.

For the first time, the final confrontation was not theoretical.

May you like

It would be a vote.

And Evelyn had just chosen the other side.
