Chapter 17 - The Last Flight Grant Tried to Steal

Grant intended to escape in a Bennett Aero light jet parked inside the rear bay.

The fire door gave him forty seconds.

It was not enough.

Federal agents disabled the hangar-door controls before the aircraft could taxi out.

Grant locked himself inside the cockpit.

Then discovered the plane had been remotely immobilized by maintenance control.

For twenty years he had designed Bennett security procedures.

Now they trapped him.

Agent Reed approached beneath cover.

“Grant Hollis! Exit the aircraft!”

No response.

David stood with Laura behind an armored service vehicle.

“You’re shaking,” he said.

“So are you.”

He almost laughed.

There would be time for anger.

Questions.

Marriage.

Betrayal.

Eighteen lost months.

Right now she was alive.

Marcus sat nearby in handcuffs.

Not arrested yet, Agent Reed explained, but detained for safety and pending questioning.

Evelyn was already inside a federal vehicle.

Celeste watched from the headquarters windows across the ramp.

Grant finally opened the aircraft door.

He descended with empty hands.

Agent Reed cuffed him.

As he passed David, Grant smiled.

“You think Laura came home because you won?”

David looked at him.

“No.”

Grant’s smile faded.

“You still don’t understand your wife.”

Laura stepped forward.

“I understand myself.”

Grant turned.

For the first time, fear entered his face.

Laura continued.

“You told me David would protect the company before he protected the truth.”

Grant glanced toward David.

Laura said:

“He stepped down.”

Grant’s expression changed.

That one decision had broken Grant’s central assumption.

Thomas Bennett’s family would always choose control.

David had not.

Grant was taken away.

Then Laura saw Ethan’s compass on the floor.

She picked it up.

A dent marked one edge.

“You kept it.”

David answered, “Ethan did.”

Her eyes filled.

“Where is he?”

“With Maya.”

“Does he know?”

“That you’re alive? Yes.”

“That you’re here?”

“No.”

Laura closed her eyes.

“I need to see him.”

David did not say home.

He did not presume.

“I’ll take you.”

At Maya’s apartment, Ethan opened the door.

For several seconds he simply stared.

Laura knelt.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Ethan’s face crumpled.

He ran into her.

The sound Laura made was somewhere between a laugh and a sob.

David turned away.

Maya put a hand on his shoulder.

No one spoke for a long time.

Finally Ethan pulled back.

“Why didn’t you come?”

Laura cried harder.

“I was afraid coming back would put you in danger.”

“I was already in danger.”

Laura closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“Aunt Celeste hit me.”

Laura looked at David.

He nodded.

Laura’s face changed.

Not toward rage.

Toward grief.

“She promised me she would never bring you into it.”

Ethan held up the compass.

“She wanted this.”

Laura looked at the dent.

“What happened?”

“Dad dropped it.”

David said, “That part was useful.”

Ethan almost smiled.

Then he looked at his mother.

“Did you leave because you didn’t love Dad?”

The adults went still.

Laura sat beside him.

“No.”

“Were you going to divorce him?”

David looked at Laura.

This was her answer.

She did not lie.

“I was thinking about it.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

“Because your dad and I had stopped trusting each other the way we needed to.”

David sat on Ethan’s other side.

“And I made mistakes.”

Laura looked at him.

“So did I.”

Ethan frowned.

“Are you still married?”

“Yes,” Laura said.

“Are you staying married?”

Silence.

David answered:

“We don’t know yet.”

Ethan looked between them.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

It was not the fairy-tale reunion David might once have promised.

It was better.

It was true.

Later, Agent Reed interviewed Laura formally.

She explained Grant had located her seven weeks earlier through Nora.

He forced her to leave Vermont by threatening Ethan.

At the West Virginia property, Laura pretended to cooperate while gathering information.

She escaped during the planned FBI raid because Grant panicked and ordered her to drive separately.

At the marina, Nora tried to hand her the Northstar ownership documents.

Grant arrived.

Nora escaped later.

Laura was recaptured briefly, then brought to Hangar Five as leverage.

Every stage had evidence.

Phone logs.

Cameras.

Documents.

Witnesses.

No miracles.

Only a chain of bad decisions and desperate survival.

Agent Reed then asked the question David dreaded.

“Did Celeste knowingly help Grant locate you?”

Laura looked through the glass toward David’s sister.

“Yes.”

David closed his eyes.

Laura continued.

“But later she helped me disappear from him.”

Celeste had betrayed Laura.

Then protected her.

Then betrayed her again.

Exactly the kind of contradiction this family produced.

The next morning prosecutors unsealed several warrants.

Grant Hollis faced kidnapping-related charges, wire fraud, identity theft, extortion, obstruction, and conspiracy.

Evelyn Marsh faced conspiracy and fraud charges.

Marcus faced separate financial-fraud exposure.

Jonathan entered cooperation discussions.

And Celeste?

Celeste was arrested before breakfast.

As agents led her through the Bennett Aero lobby, she looked at David.

“Is Ethan safe?”

“Yes.”

“Laura?”

“Yes.”

Celeste nodded.

Then she asked:

“Does she know I found her?”

David looked at his sister.

May you like

“She knows everything.”

For once, Celeste had nowhere left to hide.
