Chapter 14 - Leonard Comes Back

Leonard surrendered through an attorney.
Not to Ethan.
To federal investigators.
Rebecca learned because Agent Price canceled Ethan’s interview and rescheduled it.
“That could be good,” Ethan said.
“It could also be terrible.”
“Does every sentence with you have to end that way?”
“Yes.”
Leonard negotiated a proffer session.
Within twenty-four hours, portions of his account reached Rebecca through lawful discovery channels connected to the trust litigation.
Leonard admitted opening the account in Ethan’s name.
He admitted exporting Ethan’s credentials.
He admitted following Mara.
But he blamed Celeste for everything.
Ethan read the summary.
“She ordered him to forge my identity.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s his claim.”
“Do you believe him?”
“I believe he wants a cooperation deal.”
Leonard described Celeste as architect of the Bellweather fraud.
Gabriel as outside partner.
Malcolm as concealment lawyer.
Judith as paid board protector.
Ethan as oblivious beneficiary.
It almost sounded perfect.
Too perfect.
Then Leonard added something unexpected.
He claimed Mara had secretly paid him.
Ethan looked up.
“For what?”
“To copy Celeste’s records.”
Rebecca continued reading.
“Mara recruited Leonard as an informant shortly after she discovered the scheme.”
Ethan stared.
“Leonard was working for Mara?”
“According to him.”
“Then why turn against her?”
“He says Celeste discovered it and threatened to expose crimes he had committed for Richard Mercer years earlier.”
“What crimes?”
“Document destruction. False inventory reports. Moving paintings between storage facilities to obstruct claimant research.”
Ethan felt exhausted by inherited wrongdoing.
“So Leonard switched sides.”
“Yes.”
“And after Mara died?”
“He worked entirely for Celeste and Gabriel.”
“Why open an account in my name?”
“To create a financial trail.”
“Celeste’s idea?”
“Leonard says yes.”
Rebecca turned the page.
Then stopped.
“What?”
“He says Celeste never intended to send you to prison.”
Ethan laughed.
“Generous.”
“She intended to create enough exposure to force you to resign and settle privately.”
“That is supposed to be better?”
“No.”
“What changed?”
“Gabriel.”
Leonard claimed Gabriel escalated the scheme, sending anonymous evidence to authorities and moving money through Ethan’s false account.
Gabriel wanted prosecution.
Celeste wanted leverage.
Their alliance fractured.
That matched some messages.
But one thing still bothered Ethan.
“If Leonard was afraid enough to flee, why surrender now?”
Rebecca looked at the final paragraph.
“Because Gabriel threatened him.”
“With what?”
“A recording.”
“What recording?”
“Room 317.”
Ethan went still.
Rebecca read:
Laurent possesses an audio recording made by Mara Mercer in Room 317 approximately four days before death. Recording allegedly contains confession by multiple parties and discussion of future restitution plan.
“Multiple parties?”
“Leonard, Celeste, Malcolm.”
“Mara recorded them?”
“Apparently.”
“That was in the red envelope?”
“Possibly a storage device or access information.”
Ethan stood.
“Gabriel has it now.”
Rebecca nodded.
“If Leonard is telling the truth.”
Simone was called.
She remembered Gabriel buying a small digital recorder around that time.
“He said a dying woman was trying to trap him.”
“Mara?”
“I assume.”
“Did Gabriel ever enter Room 317?”
“Not that I know.”
“Then how did he get the recording?”
Simone hesitated.
“Celeste.”
Ethan frowned.
“Celeste took the valuables packet.”
“Yes.”
“But why give Gabriel evidence incriminating herself?”
“Maybe she didn’t know what it was.”
That evening Celeste requested a meeting.
Through attorneys.
Rebecca insisted on attending.
Celeste arrived without makeup, without jewelry, without the armored elegance she usually wore.
“I need Lily protected,” she said.
Ethan almost laughed.
“From you?”
“From Gabriel.”
“You are not in a position to make requests.”
“I know.”
That surprised him.
Celeste placed a keycard on the table.
“Private storage facility in Newark.”
“What’s there?”
“Gabriel’s backup files.”
“How do you know?”
“I rented the unit for him.”
Rebecca asked, “Why tell us now?”
Celeste looked at Ethan.
“Because Leonard surrendered.”
“And?”
“Gabriel will assume I sent him.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
She took a breath.
“And because Gabriel sent me this.”
She played a voice message.
Gabriel’s voice:
“Bring me the pendant and withdraw the restitution disclosures, or I release the Room 317 recording edited exactly the way I want the world to hear it.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Edited?”
“He can make Mara sound as if she accused you.”
“Did she?”
Celeste looked at him.
“At first.”
The old wound reopened.
“But later she knew the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Does the full recording prove that?”
Celeste nodded.
“And more.”
“What more?”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“She made me promise to protect Lily from all of this.”
Ethan’s voice became hard.
“You failed.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Then Celeste said the words Ethan never expected.
“I will confess publicly.”
He stared.
Rebecca did not react.
Celeste continued.
“Fraud. Forgery. Bellweather. All of it.”
“Why now?”
“Because I finally understand what Mara meant.”
Ethan waited.
Celeste looked at her hands.
“She told me there would come a moment when saving myself and saving Lily would become two different choices.”
She looked up.
“That moment is here.”
Before anyone could answer, Ethan’s phone buzzed.
A news alert.
An audio clip had just been published online.
Mara’s weak voice filled the room:
“Ethan knew enough to stop this.”
Then the clip cut.
The headline beneath it read:
