Chapter 1 - The Fall

Serena’s hand was already driving into Elena’s back when the pregnant woman lost her balance on the grand staircase.

Elena gasped.

Her right hand caught the polished mahogany banister. Her left arm folded instinctively over the curve of her seven-month pregnancy as her shoes slipped from beneath her.

One step.

Then another.

Her hip struck the runner covering the center of the staircase, and she slid several feet before managing to twist onto her side and stop herself.

“Elena!”

The study doors burst open below.

Adrian ran into the marble foyer, his face draining of color.

“What happened?”

For one suspended second, Serena remained at the top of the staircase.

Cold.

Silent.

Watching.

Then her entire expression changed.

She rushed downward.

“She slipped!” Serena cried. “I tried to catch her!”

Elena stared at her.

Serena reached the bottom first and stepped between her brother and Elena as though shielding the injured woman from some invisible danger.

“She lost her footing. I was right behind her.”

“No.”

Elena’s voice came out breathless.

Adrian dropped to one knee.

“Elena, don’t move.”

“She pushed me.”

Serena froze.

It lasted barely half a second.

Then outrage replaced the fear in her face.

“How dare you?”

Elena ignored her.

“Adrian, she pushed me.”

Serena pointed at Elena.

“She has been trying to turn you against me for months.”

“What?” Adrian said.

“You know how paranoid she’s become about this house, about the company, about me. Now she falls and suddenly it’s my fault?”

Elena’s heart was hammering, but the panic inside her began to sharpen into something colder.

Three weeks earlier, temporary security cameras had been installed throughout Ravenwood’s west wing while electrical work was being completed. Elena, an architectural preservation consultant before her pregnancy, had been supervising portions of the restoration herself.

Serena knew the main security system.

She did not know about the temporary camera above the west foyer arch.

Elena reached for the phone in her cardigan pocket.

“I don’t need you to believe me,” she said.

Serena’s face changed.

Elena noticed.

She unlocked the phone.

“Watch.”

The camera application opened.

The footage showed the staircase from above.

Elena walked into frame.

Serena followed.

Even through the small screen, the gold bracelet around Serena’s wrist flashed beneath the chandelier.

She looked toward the foyer.

She looked toward the closed study.

Then she placed both hands against Elena’s back.

And pushed.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“You pushed my pregnant wife.”

Serena’s lips parted.

“It looks—”

“It looks exactly like what happened,” Elena said.

Adrian rewound the recording.

“Wait.”

The camera captured sound.

Thirty seconds before Elena appeared, Serena had been standing alone near the landing, speaking quietly into her phone.

Her voice came through the speaker.

“Once that baby arrives, you’ll own everything.”

Elena stared at the screen.

Adrian looked slowly toward his sister.

“What does that mean?”

Serena did not answer.

Adrian rewound farther.

The recording played again.

Serena’s voice was clearer this time.

“She falls tonight, and the inheritance stays exactly where it belongs.”

The foyer went silent.

Elena’s anger disappeared.

Something much colder replaced it.

Adrian stood.

“What inheritance?”

Serena’s face turned white.

“Give me the phone.”

“No,” Elena said.

Serena stepped toward her.

Adrian moved between them.

“Don’t.”

Serena stared at her brother.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“You pushed my wife down the stairs while she’s carrying my child.”

“I wasn’t trying to—”

“To what?”

Serena looked toward Elena’s stomach.

That glance answered more than her words could.

Adrian’s face hardened.

Elena felt another sensation then—not pain exactly, but a tightening low across her abdomen.

She inhaled sharply.

Adrian turned immediately.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know.”

The fury disappeared from him.

“Call an ambulance.”

Serena stepped forward.

“Elena—”

“Stay away from me.”

It was the first time Elena had raised her voice.

Serena stopped.

Adrian called emergency services while Elena remained seated against the lower step, one arm around her belly.

Within minutes, sirens cut through the quiet winter grounds surrounding Ravenwood.

Paramedics entered.

A deputy from the Westchester County Sheriff’s Office arrived behind them after Adrian reported that the fall had been intentional.

As Elena was lifted onto a stretcher, Serena stood beside the staircase where the gold bracelet on her wrist still gleamed beneath the chandelier.

One deputy asked her to remain in the foyer.

Serena looked toward Adrian.

He did not look back.

Elena held onto his hand while the paramedics wheeled her toward the doors.

Then her phone vibrated.

A notification appeared from the temporary security system.

REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS REQUESTED.

Elena frowned.

Another message followed.

REQUEST ORIGIN: RAVENWOOD MAIN OFFICE.

Someone inside the mansion was trying to access the camera system.

Elena looked across the foyer.

Serena was speaking with the deputy.

Behind her, through the open study doors, the light on the office computer had just turned on.

And someone was sitting at the desk.
