Chapter 5 - Maria’s Copy

Maria agreed to meet Detective Ortiz.
Not Daniel.
Ortiz allowed Grace to attend because of the corporate evidence.
Daniel waited outside.
He hated waiting.
Perhaps he needed more practice.
Maria entered through a side entrance wearing a gray coat.
The redness on her cheek had faded.
Daniel’s shame had not.
She stopped when she saw him.
Neither spoke.
Finally Daniel said, “I won’t approach you.”
Maria nodded.
“Thank you.”
Those two words created more distance than anger would have.
The interview lasted ninety minutes.
When Grace emerged, Daniel stood.
“Well?”
“Maria did not leak the video.”
“You believe her?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Her account was cloned.”
Daniel frowned.
Someone had copied Maria’s household access token two weeks earlier.
The clone logged into the security archive from an IP address associated with a private suite at Whitmore’s own Harbor Point Resort.
Grace continued.
“The room was booked under Harlow Capital.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Victor.”
“Maybe someone working for him.”
Maria appeared behind Grace.
She carried an envelope.
Daniel stepped back automatically.
Maria noticed.
She looked at Ortiz.
“Can I give this to him?”
Ortiz nodded.
Maria crossed the distance.
She held out the envelope.
“I should have given this to police immediately.”
Daniel took it.
“What is it?”
“Something Claire dropped.”
Inside was a photograph Maria had taken with her phone.
Bank instructions.
Wire transfers.
Three payments from Whitmore Harbor Management to an entity named Marblegate Consulting.
Total: $3.4 million.
Daniel looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Maria’s face tightened.
“Because Claire said she would say I stole from the house.”
“You thought I’d believe her.”
Maria’s silence answered.
Daniel felt sick.
Of course she had thought that.
He had proved her right at the staircase.
Maria continued.
“I have a mother and two younger brothers who depend on me. I could not afford to lose my job because rich people were fighting.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.”
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“You understand now.”
He looked at her.
The phrase echoed Emma.
You know now.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.”
Maria seemed surprised he did not defend himself.
She continued.
“I saw Claire take papers from your safe. I saw Victor at the house twice when you were traveling.”
Daniel looked up.
“Victor came here?”
“Yes.”
“At night.”
“With Claire?”
“Yes.”
“What were they doing?”
“I do not know.”
Maria hesitated.
“But once I heard them arguing.”
“About what?”
“Victor said, ‘If Daniel stays in control, we all lose.’”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
Maria looked toward Ortiz.
“And Claire said, ‘I will not hurt the children.’”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel barely breathed.
“When?”
“About six weeks ago.”
Before Noah’s stroller attack.
“What did Victor say?”
Maria closed her eyes, remembering.
“He said, ‘Then find another way to break him.’”
Daniel’s skin went cold.
Claire’s words after the staircase returned.
You were supposed to be the one who broke.
The plan had begun before that afternoon.
Maria continued.
“I thought they meant business.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“So did I, until now.”
Ortiz took the photograph.
Marblegate Consulting became the next target.
It was a Delaware LLC owned through layers of shell entities.
But the bank receiving the money was in Connecticut.
The authorized signer was Claire Whitmore.
Daniel stared at the paperwork.
She had siphoned millions from company management accounts.
Grace warned him.
“Do not jump to the conclusion that all of it went to her.”
“Her signature.”
“Follow the money.”
They did.
Most Marblegate funds moved within twenty-four hours to Harlow Special Situations.
Claire had been paying Victor.
Debt service.
Interest.
Penalties.
Her original $8.6 million guarantee had grown to nearly $13 million.
Victor had her trapped.
Daniel felt no sympathy when he remembered Noah tumbling down marble.
But he finally understood the machinery.
Claire had stolen from the company to service Victor’s debt.
Victor used that theft to control her further.
Every payment made her more vulnerable.
Every lie required another.
Maria prepared to leave.
Daniel said, “One thing.”
She stopped.
He did not move closer.
“I’ve instructed my attorney to cooperate fully with your civil claim.”
Maria’s expression did not change.
“I’m not asking you to drop anything.”
She studied him.
“You think money fixes it?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I think consequences are supposed to cost something.”
Maria looked at him for several seconds.
Then she nodded once.
After she left, Emma appeared from a nearby office where Celeste, Daniel’s cousin, had been watching her.
Emma ran to Maria.
“Wait!”
Maria turned.
Emma hugged her.
Maria immediately knelt.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
“Are you coming home?”
Maria’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Emma’s face crumpled.
“Because of Dad?”
Maria looked toward Daniel.
He did not interfere.
“Partly.”
Emma started crying.
Maria wiped her tears.
“Listen to me. I love you. But sometimes loving people does not mean staying where something bad happened.”
Emma sniffed.
“Can I still call you?”
Maria glanced at her attorney.
Then at Daniel.
Daniel nodded.
“If Maria wants.”
Maria smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
Emma hugged her again.
Daniel watched.
He understood something uncomfortable.
Maria could remain part of Emma’s life without returning to his control.
Perhaps that was healthier for everyone.
Grace’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression hardened.
“What?”
She looked at Daniel.
“Harlow just called the old reserve loan.”
Daniel stared.
“On what basis?”
“Default.”
“We aren’t in default.”
“They claim the forged amendment gave them acceleration rights.”
Daniel’s pulse climbed.
Grace continued.
“They intend to seize pledged collateral Monday morning.”
“How much?”
“Enough to swing the shareholder vote.”
Daniel looked through the window toward the mansion.
The staircase had been one piece.
Claire’s debt another.
The leaked video another.
Victor had not been improvising.
He had been building a takeover.
May you like
And Monday—
he planned to finish it.
