Chapter 8 - Cole Key

Cole Key was less an island than a private patch of limestone and mangrove fifteen miles offshore.

Richard Cole bought it in the 1990s.

A six-bedroom storm house stood near the center.

Nathan had not visited in years.

Celeste used it occasionally for executive retreats.

Damon Pike maintained security systems there.

The Broward sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant.

Nathan was told to stay away.

He did not argue.

He had finally learned that wanting answers did not make him an investigator.

The search lasted fourteen hours.

They found no body.

They found evidence Mara had been there.

A broken earring beneath a bedroom cabinet.

A scarf identified by Nathan.

Her fingerprints on an interior window.

And inside a locked storage room, dried blood.

The quantity was small.

Enough for testing.

Nathan sat in his kitchen waiting.

Caleb slept upstairs.

Grace remained nearby because Caleb had begun refusing to stay with unfamiliar staff.

At 2:11 a.m., Morales called.

“The blood is consistent with Mara’s DNA.”

Nathan did not speak.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Was she alive there?”

“The evidence suggests she was injured there.”

“Was she killed there?”

“We cannot say.”

“What else?”

Morales hesitated.

“A bedroom door had an exterior latch.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Someone had held Mara on the island.

The next morning, Pike changed his story.

Faced with physical evidence, he admitted taking Mara to Cole Key.

“Why?”

“He says Celeste wanted the copied documents.”

Nathan’s voice was cold.

“Did Celeste go with them?”

“No.”

“Convenient.”

“Phone records support that she remained in Palm Beach until morning.”

That surprised him.

Pike said Mara was held overnight.

She refused to reveal where she had hidden the original evidence.

Pike claimed he left her alone while he took a call.

Mara smashed the bedroom window and escaped.

“Escaped where?” Nathan asked.

“It’s an island.”

Morales nodded.

“She reached the beach.”

Then she stole a maintenance skiff.

The skiff disappeared.

Pike claimed he assumed she reached the mainland.

“Do you believe him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he received seven hundred fifty thousand dollars three days later.”

Nathan looked toward the ocean.

“That was the payment.”

“Possibly.”

The word irritated him.

He had learned not to fight it.

The search team found something else on Cole Key.

An old voice recorder inside a ventilation duct.

Mara had hidden it.

The first file contained nearly twenty minutes of conversation.

Pike.

Mara.

No Celeste.

Pike said:

“Give me the Northstar copies.”

Mara answered:

“Tell Celeste she can explain it to Nathan.”

“He’ll choose her.”

“You hope.”

“He always chooses blood.”

Mara was silent for several seconds.

Then:

“Caleb is his blood too.”

Nathan covered his mouth.

Pike continued.

“If this goes public, the company collapses.”

“No. Celeste loses control.”

“She says lenders will call everything.”

“She created that risk.”

“She says you approved the trust guarantee.”

“I approved three million.”

“She has your signature.”

“She changed the schedules.”

Then Pike said:

“You signed too many things without reading.”

Mara answered:

“That is Nathan’s problem, not permission to steal from our son.”

Nathan stopped the recording.

Grace sat across from him.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She nodded.

No false reassurance.

He resumed.

Near the end, Pike said:

“Your marriage is already over.”

Mara replied:

“That does not mean Nathan is my enemy.”

“So you are leaving him?”

“Yes.”

Nathan went completely still.

Mara continued.

“I was going to file after Caleb’s school year.”

Grace looked away.

Nathan listened.

“I love Nathan,” Mara said. “But I can’t keep raising Caleb in a family where nobody says no to Richard’s habits just because Richard is dead.”

Pike laughed.

“Richard built everything.”

“And taught Celeste that protecting the company excuses anything.”

The recording ended with Mara saying:

“If I get out of here, I’m telling Nathan everything.”

Nathan sat in silence.

Mara had planned to leave him.

That truth hurt.

But it did not mean she abandoned Caleb.

It did not mean she stole.

And it did not make what happened to her less criminal.

Nathan was beginning to understand that truth could injure him without becoming Celeste’s weapon.

Then Morales called again.

Divers had found the missing maintenance skiff.

It lay seventy feet below the surface.

Six miles north of Cole Key.

There was no one inside.

May you like

But one seat belt had been cut.

And the inside of the hull contained more of Mara’s blood.
