Chapter 10 - Sarah’s Black Car

The search warrant was executed at 6:12 the next morning.
Vanessa’s attorney protested from the front driveway.
She herself stood in the marble foyer wearing a navy robe and watching investigators enter the garage.
Detective Ruiz supervised.
The black sports car remained where Michael had left it before Chicago.
A 2018 performance coupe Sarah had ordered during one of the brief periods when her treatment seemed to be working.
She had chosen black because, she told Michael, red cars looked as though they were trying too hard.
Lucas remembered everything about it.
Investigators searched underneath.
Nothing.
Behind the tires.
Nothing.
Inside the wheel wells.
Nothing.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“This is absurd.”
Ruiz ignored her.
A technician moved the portable lift slightly.
Something clicked.
He crouched.
A small metal capsule had been magnetically attached beneath the lift rail.
“Detective.”
Ruiz put on gloves.
Inside the capsule was an encrypted USB drive.
Vanessa’s face changed.
That was enough for Ruiz to notice.
“Recognize it?”
“No.”
“Interesting.”
“What is?”
“You stopped breathing.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You people desperately want me to be a criminal.”
Ruiz sealed the drive.
“We want evidence.”
The encryption took nine hours to break using credentials Dana provided after reaching an agreement with prosecutors regarding the unauthorized Sarah transfer.
The government did not promise she would face no consequences.
Dana accepted that.
“I should have disclosed it years ago,” she told Michael.
“So should I.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I knew Sarah was worried about Graham.”
“That’s different.”
“No.”
Michael looked at her.
“I dismissed her because listening was harder.”
Dana said nothing.
The USB contained seven years of records.
Northstar invoices.
Bank transfers.
Email exports.
Draft agreements.
Screenshots.
Vendor approvals.
Messages between Graham and Thomas Keene.
One message made Rebecca swear aloud.
Thomas had written:
POA SIGNATURE PAGE READY. NEED V TO PRACTICE INITIALS.
Graham answered:
USE SCANNED EXECUTIVE PACKET VERSION. CLEANER.
Another thread involved Alderbridge.
ADRIAN: If MB is removed temporarily, how long until forced recap?
GRAHAM: 30-45 days if bank cooperates. Less if we manufacture reporting failure.
Then Rebecca found a folder labeled LUCAS.
Michael did not want to open it.
He did anyway.
Videos appeared.
Vanessa filming Lucas crying at a dining table.
Vanessa ordering him to repeat false confessions.
Photographs of broken objects beside captions describing “episodes.”
Draft emails to Dr. Pike.
An application to a residential behavioral program in Utah.
And a private memorandum from Vanessa.
Objective: establish pattern of instability before Michael becomes unavailable.
Michael read that sentence three times.
“What does ‘unavailable’ mean?”
Rebecca’s face had gone pale.
They searched the folder.
Another document appeared.
A timeline.
First: intensify Lucas behavioral file.
Second: finalize Michael POA.
Third: secure board suspension trigger.
Fourth: obtain emergency management authority.
Fifth: challenge Michael as trustee of Lucas shares based on incapacity and domestic violence.
Sixth: residential placement for Lucas during litigation.
Michael could barely breathe.
“She planned to take him away.”
Rebecca looked at the dates.
“This started nine months ago.”
Before Michael’s Chicago trip.
Before Dana disappeared.
Before the slap.
The slap had not created Vanessa’s plan.
It had simply given her useful evidence.
The realization did not absolve Michael.
It frightened him more.
“What was supposed to make me unavailable?”
Rebecca searched.
No answer.
Then Dana found another file.
A PDF titled MEDICAL.
Inside were invoices from a concierge physician Michael had never met.
Requests for information about sedatives.
Drug interactions.
Blood concentrations.
Michael stared.
“Was she going to poison me?”
Rebecca raised a hand.
“We do not know that.”
Dana whispered, “Graham asked me two months ago whether an executive could be removed if toxicology showed medication misuse.”
Michael’s skin went cold.
Rebecca immediately contacted Ruiz.
By evening the criminal investigation expanded again.
Yet the strongest revelation did not involve medication.
It involved Sarah.
The USB contained scanned pages from her original audit.
Sarah had traced Northstar directly to Graham.
She had also written something beside Vanessa’s name.
Michael stared.
“How could Sarah know Vanessa?”
Dana leaned closer.
The date was six months before Sarah died.
Vanessa had not met Michael—at least not officially—until almost a year later.
The handwritten note read:
Vanessa Mercer — G.V. connection? Event vendor. Ask Dana.
Michael turned slowly toward Dana.
“You knew her.”
Dana’s silence answered.
“How?”
“Vanessa worked for one of the corporate event agencies we used.”
“And Sarah met her?”
“Yes.”
“Why did nobody tell me?”
Dana looked miserable.
“Because it seemed irrelevant after Sarah died.”
Michael felt the room tilt.
“When did Vanessa meet Graham?”
“Years before she met you.”
“How many?”
“At least two.”
Michael sat.
His marriage had not merely become part of Graham’s conspiracy.
There was a possibility it had begun as part of it.
Rebecca searched the USB further.
A photograph appeared.
Taken at a Bennett Mobility charity gala five years earlier.
Sarah was visible in the foreground.
Thin but smiling.
Behind her stood Graham.
Beside him was a younger Vanessa.
Their hands were touching.
The timestamp was eighteen months before Vanessa supposedly met Michael.
Michael stared.
Then Dana whispered, “There’s more.”
A deleted message recovered from the archive appeared beneath the photograph.

It had been sent from Graham to Vanessa.
Be patient. After Sarah, he’ll need someone.
