Chapter 4 - The Other Names

By morning, four students had contacted Emma.

By lunch, there were seven.

Liam wanted none of it.

He sat behind the gym with his lunch untouched while Emma read messages from her phone.

“Marcus Reed says Mrs. Keller called him ‘the next mug shot in the family.’”

Liam winced.

“That was last year.”

“Jasmine says Keller told her she should understand deadlines since her mother understood eviction notices.”

“Stop.”

Emma lowered the phone.

“I thought you’d want to know.”

“I don’t know what I want.”

“You could help them.”

“Why me?”

“Because somebody finally has proof.”

Liam looked at her.

“You have proof.”

“It happened to you.”

“Exactly.”

He stood.

“I’m the kid with the prison dad. That’s what everybody knows now.”

Emma’s expression hardened.

“Everybody already knew.”

“Not like this.”

“No. Now they know what she did with it.”

Liam walked away.

He almost reached the building before she called after him.

“She told me to stay invisible.”

He stopped.

Emma was still by the wall.

“So I recorded her,” she said. “But if everybody decides being visible is too dangerous, then she wins.”

Liam hated when Emma made sense.

The school placed a substitute in Room 214.

Mrs. Keller’s name disappeared from the classroom door before fourth period.

Rumors replaced her immediately.

Some students said she had been fired.

Others said Liam’s family was suing for millions.

Someone claimed Liam had deliberately provoked her.

At his locker, a boy named Trent Holloway muttered, “Guess Carter finally figured out how to make money legally.”

Liam slammed his locker.

“What?”

Trent raised both hands.

“Relax.”

“Say it again.”

A teacher turned the corner.

Trent walked away smiling.

Liam spent the rest of the afternoon furious at himself for almost giving everyone exactly what they expected.

After school, Principal Mercer asked him to stay.

Rachel joined through video from work.

Mercer explained that the district had opened a formal personnel investigation.

“We need a written account from Liam.”

Liam looked at him.

“Emma has the recording.”

“Yes.”

“Then why do you need me?”

“Because audio establishes words. It does not establish everything around them.”

Liam understood.

“You want to know if I caused it.”

Mercer frowned.

“That isn’t what I said.”

“It’s what everybody keeps asking.”

Rachel spoke from the tablet.

“Liam, you don’t have to answer anything today.”

Mercer nodded.

“That’s correct.”

Liam looked around the office.

A framed plaque behind Mercer’s desk read EVERY STUDENT BELONGS.

He almost laughed.

“Did anyone complain about her before?”

Mercer became still.

“That’s part of the investigation.”

“So yes.”

“I can’t discuss other students’ records.”

“That means yes.”

“Liam.”

“How many?”

Mercer removed his glasses.

“I am not permitted to tell you.”

“Did you know?”

The principal’s silence lasted too long.

Rachel noticed.

“So there were complaints,” she said.

Mercer leaned forward.

“There were concerns over the years involving communication style and disciplinary language.”

“Communication style?” Liam repeated.

Mercer looked uncomfortable.

“Some were documented. Some were informal.”

“And she kept teaching.”

“None included a recording like this.”

Liam stared at the plaque again.

Every student belongs.

Apparently belonging required evidence.

At home, he created a new document.

At the top he typed:

What Happened in Room 214

Then he deleted it.

Typed it again.

Deleted it again.

Finally he wrote one sentence.

I dropped a worksheet beside my desk.

The rest came slowly.

The ruler.

The father comment.

The cell and desk.

Emma objecting.

The threat.

When he reached the sentence Your family already has one person everybody whispers about, he stopped.

For five minutes, he could not continue.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

You think one recording makes you a hero? Ask your mother what she begged the Kellers not to tell you.

Liam read it twice.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed his father outside a courthouse eighteen months earlier.

Beside Daniel stood Frank Keller.

They were shaking hands.

Not angrily.

Almost privately.

Liam enlarged the image.

On the back of Daniel’s hand was the old scar Liam knew well.

It was definitely him.

Liam looked toward the kitchen, where Rachel was washing dishes.

There was another part of the story.

May you like

And somebody wanted him to find it.
