Chapter 11 - Benjamin’s Withdrawal

Grace stared at the bank record.
“My father stole two million dollars?”
Maya shook her head.
“We don’t know.”
“It went into an account he controlled.”
“Yes.”
“I would know if Dad had two million dollars.”
“Would you?”
Grace looked hurt.
Laura understood the feeling.
Believing you knew a person was not evidence.
They traced the money.
Benjamin moved the $2 million into five certificates of deposit under a legal trust name.
ASTER DEFENSE ESCROW.
No personal withdrawals.
No luxury purchases.
No hidden house.
When Benjamin died, the certificates remained untouched.
Beneficiary instructions required release only upon one of three conditions:
Ethan Mercer publicly reappears.
A government investigation opens into ASTER sabotage.
Noah Mercer reaches age eighteen.
The second condition had now occurred.
The money belonged to the legal defense fund.
Grace closed her eyes.
“He kept it safe.”
“Yes.”
“But he never told anyone.”
Laura said, “He was afraid.”
Grace looked at her.
“That explanation is starting to annoy me.”
“Me too.”
Benjamin had also left a sealed letter with the trust company.
It was addressed to Grace.
She read it privately.
Then handed a copy to Laura.
Grace,
If this letter opens because the investigation finally started, I failed to do what I should have done years earlier.
Victor threatened to accuse me of helping Ethan falsify flight records. He also threatened your job prospects in aviation.
I told myself silence protected you.
Maybe it protected me.
Flight 417 was the worst flight of my career because every person aboard believed secrecy was saving someone.
It wasn’t.
At one point Ethan asked me to land without Victor’s permission.
I should have done it.
I did not.
I am sorry.
Grace cried quietly.
“My father could have landed.”
Laura nodded.
“So could Ethan have insisted sooner.”
“So could Andrea have refused the papers.”
“So could Evelyn have gone straight to regulators.”
“So could I have read what I signed.”
Grace looked at her.
“And Victor?”
Laura’s expression hardened.
“Victor created choices under threat. That matters.”
Responsibility was not equal simply because everyone had failed.
That distinction became important when Victor’s lawyers launched their public defense.
They released selected Ethan emails portraying him as unstable after the crash.
One said:
NO HOSPITAL. NO POLICE UNTIL I KNOW WHO USED LAURA.
Another:
VICTOR IS THE ONLY PERSON I CAN TRUST RIGHT NOW.
The media narrative shifted again.
Maybe Victor had been following Ethan’s wishes.
Maybe Laura was blaming him for decisions Ethan made himself.
Then Andrea’s original Flight 417 notes surfaced.
Ethan’s trust instructions changed over time.
Day 2 after the crash:
Temporary proxy to Victor.
Day 19:
Revoke Victor. Laura to receive emergency voting authority if cleared.
Day 23:
Independent trustee for Noah. No Mercer family member to hold unilateral voting power.
Laura stared.
“Ethan stopped trusting both of us?”
Andrea nodded.
“Not exactly.”
“What else could that mean?”
“He realized the problem was family control itself.”
That hurt differently.
Perhaps Ethan had learned before any of them.
The final unsigned draft created a three-person independent trust committee until Noah turned twenty-five.
Victor had suppressed it.
“Why wasn’t this filed?”
“He died before execution.”
“So legally it means nothing.”
“As an instrument, yes. As evidence of intent, it matters.”
Victor’s lawyers called it a draft.
They were correct.
Then Noah did something no adult expected.
He asked to see the restored music box.
A conservator had repaired the lid but left the fracture line visible.
Noah wound it.
The melody began again.
A simple lullaby Ethan used to hum.
Noah listened.
Then frowned.
“It stops early.”
The conservator checked.
One gear had been deliberately shortened.
Inside the mechanism was a tiny paper cylinder wrapped beneath the spring.
It had not been visible when the box broke because Victor shattered only the lid.
The conservator removed it carefully.
Ethan’s handwriting.
417 — REAR SAFE — TWO LOCKS — MUSIC + TOKEN.
Laura looked at Noah.
“The token is only one lock.”
“What’s music?”
Grace examined the stateroom safe specifications.
The old unit used a mechanical access token plus a four-note acoustic code entered through a tone sensor.
Laura stared at the music box.
The first four notes of Ethan’s lullaby were the second key.
The safe they had opened aboard Mercer One had already been partially open.
Someone had gotten there before them.
But maintenance records showed the safe contained a false inner panel activated only by the second lock.
Victor had never known.
The photograph was only the first layer.
May you like
Something else remained hidden inside Flight 417’s stateroom.
And Mercer One was scheduled to be flown to Victor’s Vesper-controlled maintenance facility the next morning.
