Chapter 1 - The Bracelet

The storm was so violent Laura Westbrook almost missed the sound of her baby crying.

Rain struck Oceancrest Villa sideways, rattling the tall windows as she pushed through the nursery door.

Then she stopped.

Her husband was tied to a chair.

“Laura!”

Daniel Westbrook twisted against the rope around his chest and wrists.

“Don’t let her touch Mia!”

Behind him stood his older sister Serena with another length of rope in her hand.

Nine-month-old Mia screamed from her crib.

Serena turned toward the baby.

Not toward Daniel.

Toward the antique gold bracelet around Mia’s tiny wrist.

Laura dropped her bag.

“Get away from my family!”

She crossed the room before Serena could reach the crib, caught her by the arm, and pulled her backward.

Serena stumbled into the changing table.

Laura immediately lifted Mia.

The baby buried her wet face against her mother’s shoulder.

Daniel exhaled.

“She locked the doors. She took my phone.”

Laura stared at Serena.

“You tied up your own brother?”

Serena’s face remained cold.

“He wouldn’t cooperate.”

“Cooperate with what?”

Daniel looked toward Mia.

“The bracelet.”

Serena snapped, “That was never meant to stay with the child.”

Laura stopped cutting the rope around Daniel’s wrists.

“She is your niece.”

“That’s exactly why it matters.”

The room changed.

Laura finished freeing Daniel.

Red marks crossed his wrists. Two raised lines ran diagonally across the back of his shirt where Serena had struck him with the rope.

Laura touched one.

“She hit you?”

“Twice.”

Serena said, “He tried to stop me.”

Daniel stood.

“You broke into my nursery.”

“It’s the family villa.”

“You disabled the security system.”

“I had authorization.”

“You took my phone.”

“Because you were calling people who didn’t understand.”

Laura stepped between them while holding Mia.

“Understand what?”

Serena looked at the bracelet.

Daniel followed her gaze.

The little piece of gold had belonged to their family for generations. Richard Westbrook, Daniel and Serena’s father, had fastened it around Mia’s wrist himself six weeks before his death.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Dad gave her that.”

“And he should never have done it.”

Laura saw fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

She tightened her hold on Mia.

“What did he hide inside it?”

Serena froze.

Daniel stared.

Laura carefully opened the clasp.

Something smaller than her thumbnail dropped into her palm.

A microSD memory card.

Serena lunged.

“Give me that.”

Laura closed her fist.

Daniel moved between them.

“You tied me to a chair for a memory card?”

Serena laughed once.

“You still think this is about jewelry?”

Daniel looked toward the walnut drawer beside Mia’s wardrobe.

“Dad’s old archive reader.”

The drawer had been locked since Richard died.

Laura pulled her villa master keycard from her pocket.

CLICK.

Inside sat a compact secure reader Daniel had not touched in years.

He inserted the card.

A password field appeared.

Then, without prompting, the reader recognized the card’s embedded certificate.

Folders appeared.

One word stood above them.

MARINER

Daniel sat slowly.

“What the hell is this?”

Laura clicked the first folder.

Trust agreements.

Property schedules.

Private-company capitalization tables.

A document titled:

MARINER CONTINUITY TRUST — SPRINGING BENEFICIARY EVENT

Then a name.

MIA ELIZABETH WESTBROOK

Laura stared.

“Mia is connected to all of this?”

Daniel opened the document.

His face changed.

“She doesn’t just inherit something.”

“What does that mean?”

He read silently.

Then looked at Serena.

“What happens when Mia turns one?”

Serena said nothing.

Daniel scrolled.

Twenty-four percent of Westbrook Maritime & Properties.

Mariner Point.

Three coastal warehouse properties.

A private investment account.

All held inside a trust Richard created years earlier.

Mia’s first birthday triggered a change in control.

Serena suddenly shouted:

“You were never supposed to find that before her birthday!”

Silence.

Serena realized too late what she had admitted.

Laura turned toward her.

“What were you planning to do before then?”

Another file began loading.

An old photograph.

At first only the background appeared.

A pale coastal building overlooking dark water.

White columns.

A weather-beaten copper roof.

A stone plaque bearing the MARINER crest.

Laura’s stomach tightened.

“I know that place.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Where?”

Serena took a step forward.

“Laura, don’t tell him.”

That frightened Laura more than anything else Serena had done.

The photograph became clearer.

A man appeared first.

Richard Westbrook.

Younger.

Maybe fifteen years earlier.

Beside him stood a woman holding a thick black ledger.

Daniel leaned closer.

His eyes widened.

“Laura…”

Laura could no longer breathe.

The woman had the same dark eyes Laura saw every morning in the mirror.

Her mother.

Helen Parker.

Dead for six years.

Laura whispered, “That’s Mariner House.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You’ve been there?”

“I grew up near it. My mother worked there.”

Serena’s voice dropped.

“Your father chose that woman before Mia was even born.”

Daniel turned.

“Chose her for what?”

Serena looked toward the screen.

Laura opened the next document.

At the top were three words.

INDEPENDENT TRUST PROTECTOR

Original protector:

HELEN PARKER

Successor upon death:

LAURA PARKER WESTBROOK

Laura went completely still.

Daniel whispered, “You?”

“I didn’t know.”

Serena laughed bitterly.

“That was the whole point.”

Laura looked at her.

“What point?”

But before Serena could answer, the villa alarm suddenly came back online.

Every security panel in the nursery flashed red.

Then Daniel’s recovered house phone rang.

He answered.

The estate manager spoke breathlessly.

“Mr. Westbrook, police are at the gate.”

Daniel looked at Serena.

Laura had called 911 from the driveway before entering after noticing the villa doors had been electronically sealed.

Good.

Then the estate manager added:

“And your company’s general counsel is trying to reach you. He says there’s been an emergency board filing.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What filing?”

A document arrived on the nursery screen.

EMERGENCY RESOLUTION — REMOVAL OF DANIEL WESTBROOK AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Proposed effective time:

Tomorrow, 9:00 a.m.

Proposed successor:

SERENA WESTBROOK

Laura slowly looked at her sister-in-law.

Serena’s fear disappeared.

And for the first time that night, she smiled.
