Chapter 15 - Derek Falls

The federal investigators did not arrest Derek.

They subpoenaed him.

That felt almost worse.

His lawyers reviewed years of approvals.

The truth was ugly.

Derek had not knowingly participated in Grant’s theft.

But he had signed blanket authorizations.

Approved vendor expansions.

Delegated payment authority.

Ignored audit warnings.

He had created the environment Grant exploited.

Three suspicious transfers contained Derek’s valid digital approval.

“You didn’t know the beneficiary,” Benjamin said.

“But I signed.”

“Yes.”

“Does that make me criminally liable?”

“Intent matters.”

“Morally?”

Benjamin sighed.

“I’m your lawyer, not your priest.”

Derek stared at the documents.

“I signed while Emily was dying.”

“Then tell investigators that truthfully.”

That truth sounded terrible because it was.

Emily in an infusion chair.

Derek answering emails beside her bed.

Caleb asleep against her shoulder.

Grant sending an “urgent vendor approval.”

Derek clicking approve without reading.

He remembered.

He had called it efficiency.

Now it looked like negligence.

The board removed Derek from all executive authority pending audit.

This time he did not resist.

Hale Mountain’s stock in private markets collapsed.

Lenders demanded restructuring.

Employees protested.

Some blamed Grant.

Some blamed Derek.

Some blamed Caleb’s trust.

Reporters gathered outside the chalet.

Derek’s assault case against Mason reached a resolution.

He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault.

No jail was imposed, but he received probation, anger-management counseling, community service, and a restitution order for Mason’s lost wages and medical expenses.

Mason attended sentencing.

Derek spoke directly to him.

“I attacked you because I chose anger before facts.”

Mason nodded.

Derek continued.

“You saved my son. I repaid you with violence.”

The judge accepted the plea.

Outside, reporters shouted questions.

Derek answered only one.

“Mr. Hale, do you still consider yourself fit to run Hale Mountain?”

Derek stopped.

“No.”

Everyone went silent.

“At least not now.”

The admission became headline news.

That afternoon Caleb returned from the confidential location.

Derek expected him to run into his arms.

Caleb did not.

He stood near Margaret.

“Are you going to jail?”

“No.”

“Did you steal money?”

“No.”

“Did you sign papers?”

“Yes.”

Caleb frowned.

“So you helped.”

Derek swallowed.

“I helped make it possible without knowing.”

“That sounds like an excuse.”

“It could be.”

“Is it?”

Derek thought.

“No. It’s an explanation.”

Caleb walked past him.

The emotional setback hurt more than losing the company.

For days Caleb stayed distant.

He preferred Mason.

Margaret.

Olivia.

Any adult who had believed him faster than Derek did.

Derek accepted it badly at first.

Then better.

He kept showing up.

Therapy.

Breakfast.

School pickups.

Quiet evenings.

No demands.

Meanwhile Serena’s cooperation exposed Victor Lang.

Federal prosecutors charged him with conspiracy, wire fraud, and self-dealing-related offenses.

He resigned from the board.

Summit Crest terminated the Frostline transaction and claimed it had been deceived by Grant and Serena.

Margaret prepared civil claims to recover White Pine funds.

Still no Grant.

Then Caroline Moss found the final missing piece.

She remembered an offsite data archive Grant used during acquisitions.

A private server facility in Utah.

Federal agents searched it.

They found accounting backups.

Grant’s encrypted messages.

And a folder titled FROSTLINE CONTINGENCY.

Inside were photographs of Caleb.

School schedules.

Medical information.

The trust remainder clause.

Drone images of the tubing lane.

And a document titled INCIDENT SCENARIO.

Derek read only the first page.

TARGET OUTCOME: FATAL OR PERMANENTLY INCAPACITATING INJURY.

He dropped the page.

There was no longer any ambiguity.

Grant had planned Caleb’s death.

The folder contained Serena’s replies.

Some hesitant.

Some explicit.

One message from two days before the incident read:

If Mason is there, use him.

Derek closed his eyes.

Serena had not merely panicked after the rescue.

Mason had been the planned scapegoat.

Then investigators opened another file.

SECONDARY CONTINGENCY.

Target:

Derek Hale.

If Caleb survived and Derek blocked the sale, Grant planned to frame Derek for the reserve-account theft.

Which was already happening.
