Chapter 16 - No Way Back

Marcus did not deny the photograph.

Laura confronted him the next morning at Naomi’s office.

He looked like he had not slept.

“Calvin gave me an envelope.”

“You told me you found the ledger on the yacht.”

“I did.”

“You already had it.”

“No.”

“Then what was in the envelope?”

“A note.”

Marcus removed a folded sheet from his coat.

Naomi stopped him.

“Put it on the table.”

He did.

The note was typed.

Your wife’s family stole company records. Deliver the enclosed material to Richard’s archive and this ends quietly.

Laura stared.

“Enclosed material.”

Marcus nodded.

“A sealed brown envelope.”

“You didn’t open it?”

“No.”

“You carried it onto the yacht?”

“Yes.”

“And put it in the compartment?”

“Yes.”

Robert’s face hardened.

“So you planted the ledger.”

“I didn’t know it was the ledger.”

“You didn’t ask?”

“Calvin said Martin instructed me.”

Laura laughed in disbelief.

“And you obeyed.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I was still trying to contain this.”

“Yesterday?”

“Yes.”

“You gave me the Atlas binder and then secretly carried evidence for Martin?”

“I thought it was company property Ethan had taken.”

Ethan stood.

“You knew I denied taking anything from the company.”

“I didn’t believe you.”

Laura whispered, “You never stopped choosing them.”

Marcus looked devastated.

“I was trying to choose both.”

“That is choosing them.”

He sat.

“There’s more.”

Nobody reacted kindly to those words anymore.

Marcus continued.

“After I put the envelope in the compartment, Dad told me security had seen me. He wanted me frightened. He said if I turned against him, he would tell police I stole the ledger.”

Naomi nodded.

“A classic control tactic.”

“But I did move it.”

“Yes,” Laura said. “Because you keep agreeing to things before asking what they mean.”

Marcus looked at the floor.

Robert studied him.

Then said quietly, “That’s how Richard survives.”

Marcus looked up.

Robert continued.

“He rarely makes people do things they believe are evil. He gives them a smaller compromise. Then another. By the time they see where the staircase ends, they’re afraid to admit how many steps they took.”

Laura thought about her father’s confession.

Marcus’s restructuring.

Her own corporate email photographs.

Ethan moving the ledger.

Richard had benefited from all their mistakes.

The board meeting aboard Sovereign was four hours away.

Naomi’s attempt to obtain emergency injunctive relief had failed again.

The judge wanted clearer proof that the transaction itself was wrongful.

Northgate had not withdrawn.

Claudia still refused to testify publicly.

Dana had only two firm votes.

Richard appeared poised to win.

Then Robert’s phone rang.

Claudia.

Her voice shook.

“I’ll testify.”

Robert stood.

“What changed?”

“My grandson asked why I was afraid.”

She paused.

“I realized Richard was still collecting interest on money he paid me seven years ago.”

Laura closed her eyes.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

It was the bravest answer she could have given.

Claudia continued.

“I also remembered something.”

“What?”

“Richard kept backup copies of Meridian’s accounting archive aboard the first research vessel after the investigation.”

Robert frowned.

“The Mariner?”

“Yes.”

“That vessel was scrapped.”

“Not the navigation server.”

Marcus looked up sharply.

Claudia continued.

“When Sovereign was refitted, Richard had the old Meridian navigation cabinet installed as a decorative unit behind the bridge.”

Robert stared.

“The chronometer compartment?”

“No. Below it.”

Marcus stood.

“There’s a brass access panel beneath the cabinet.”

Claudia said, “The old server used removable optical cartridges. One contained Meridian’s accounting backup because we used the same hardware for route-analysis files.”

Naomi leaned closer to the phone.

“Would that backup include Blue Current?”

“If it’s the cartridge I think it is, yes. Original vendor creation logs. Payment approvals. Stock ledger database.”

Laura’s pulse pounded.

“Does Richard know?”

“Maybe he forgot. The system became obsolete.”

Robert gave a humorless laugh.

“The man who worships old trophies may have mounted his own evidence on a wall.”

Naomi immediately raised a hand.

“We do this lawfully.”

Dana, still a director, had authority to inspect corporate books relevant to her board duties.

Marcus remained CFO until the board removed him.

Claudia could identify the system.

Naomi contacted Northgate’s counsel and disclosed Claudia’s claim.

Northgate demanded that any such archival media be preserved before closing.

Suddenly Richard could not destroy it without creating a far worse problem.

The trap reversed.

At eleven thirty, Dana called.

“Northgate wants the board meeting moved forward.”

“To when?”

“Noon.”

Laura checked the time.

11:34.

“Where?”

“Still aboard Sovereign.”

Naomi stood.

“We’re going.”

Richard’s lawyers objected to Laura’s attendance.

Dana formally requested her presence as a factual witness.

Northgate’s counsel supported it.

Robert and Ethan were excluded.

Claudia agreed to appear by secure video.

Laura looked at her father before leaving.

Robert gave her the brass key.

“You may not need it.”

She closed her fingers around it.

“What if I do?”

“Then remember what Richard never understood.”

“What?”

“A key is only power if there’s still a lock.”

At Newport Harbor, Sovereign gleamed beneath a clearing sky.

The same yacht.

The same silver railings.

The same windows behind which Richard had fed Robert scraps forty-eight hours earlier.

Marcus stood at the gangway.

Laura walked toward him.

“Are you with me?”

He looked at the yacht.

Then at her.

“I’m against what he did.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I don’t know if I deserve to say I’m with you.”

For once, he was not asking to be forgiven.

Laura stepped onto the gangway.

Behind the glass doors, Richard waited.

And when he saw the brass key in her hand, every trace of color left his face.

May you like

There would be no more postponement.

Whatever the old cabinet contained, the final confrontation had already begun.
