Chapter 1 - The Camera Above the Garden

The metal dog bowl slammed against the stone bench beside eight-year-old Lily Mercer’s head.

BANG! BANG!

She recoiled so sharply that Oscar, the golden retriever beside her, sprang to his feet barking.

“You never listen until someone makes you!” Celeste Mercer shouted.

Rain blew sideways through the garden of the Mercer family’s seaside villa in Palm Beach County, Florida. Beyond the stone wall, Atlantic waves hammered the shore. Palm fronds bent beneath the wind.

Lily pressed herself against the bench.

“I was only sitting with Oscar.”

“You were told to come inside.”

“I told you I wanted Dad.”

Celeste’s expression hardened.

Daniel Mercer had been gone for three days inspecting a hurricane-damaged property owned by Mercer Coastal Resorts, the luxury hotel company his father had founded.

Celeste grabbed Lily’s wrist.

“Your father cannot keep running home every time you decide to become difficult.”

“You’re hurting me!”

“Then walk.”

Lily stumbled as Celeste dragged her down the wet path.

“Dad’s going to know!”

Celeste stopped.

She bent until her face was inches from Lily’s.

“Only if he believes you.”

Lily’s fear became visible.

She tried to pull away.

Her sneaker slid across algae-darkened stone.

She disappeared sideways into the shallow storm drain.

Celeste froze.

Lily landed in muddy runoff with a cry.

The drain was only a few feet deep, but the fall shocked her. Mud covered her white shirt and shorts. Her palms stung where she had caught herself.

Oscar barked furiously from above.

“Stop that noise,” Celeste snapped at the dog.

Headlights swept across the garden wall.

An SUV turned into the driveway.

Celeste’s face changed.

Daniel was home.

He saw Oscar first, running toward the driveway.

Then he heard Lily crying.

“Lily?”

He rounded the garden wall and stopped.

His daughter was sitting in muddy water.

His sister stood above her.

“Lily!”

Daniel jumped into the drain, lifted his daughter, and held her against his chest.

“What happened?”

Lily shook so hard her teeth clicked.

Celeste spoke first.

“She slipped. She’s been playing near that drain all afternoon.”

Daniel looked at her.

Then at the dog bowl lying beside the stone bench.

Then at Lily’s reddened wrist.

His voice lowered.

“Why is her wrist marked?”

“She fought me when I told her to come inside.”

Daniel crouched in front of Lily.

“Sweetheart. Look at me.”

Lily did.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Her eyes flicked toward Celeste.

She immediately looked down.

“She dragged me.”

Celeste scoffed.

“She’s angry because I disciplined her.”

Daniel slowly stood.

“Then why is she scared to look at you?”

Celeste’s mouth opened.

No answer came.

A man in a navy resort-security jacket hurried through the gate. Marcus Reed had worked security for Mercer Coastal Resorts for eleven years.

“I heard shouting from the west patrol route.”

Daniel pointed toward Lily.

“I want to know what happened here.”

“There is nothing to investigate,” Celeste said.

Marcus glanced at the bench.

Then upward.

Beneath the second-floor balcony sat a small black security camera.

Marcus raised his tablet.

“Actually, that unit covers the entire garden.”

Celeste went pale.

Daniel noticed.

Marcus began accessing the recording.

Celeste stepped toward him.

“Turn that tablet off.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why?”

“It’s company security footage. Daniel cannot just—”

“This is my house,” Daniel said.

Celeste looked at him.

Technically, that statement was not entirely true.

The villa had belonged to their father, August Mercer. After August’s death eighteen months earlier, ownership had transferred into a trust established for Lily.

Daniel served as trustee until Lily turned twenty-five.

Celeste knew that better than anyone.

Marcus tapped the screen.

A loading symbol appeared.

Lily tightened both hands around Daniel’s fingers.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“She hit the bench with Oscar’s bowl.”

Celeste snapped, “Lily.”

Daniel turned toward his sister.

“Don’t say her name.”

The screen flickered.

Video appeared.

There was Lily beside Oscar.

There was Celeste approaching.

Daniel watched his sister lift the stainless-steel bowl.

The first crash against the bench exploded through the tablet speakers.

Lily flinched against him even though it was only a recording.

The second crash followed.

Then Celeste’s recorded voice:

“You never listen until someone makes you!”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

The footage continued.

Celeste seized Lily.

Dragged her.

Then came the sentence Daniel would hear in his sleep for weeks.

“Only if he believes you.”

Silence settled over the garden.

Marcus looked sick.

Daniel faced his sister.

“You threatened my daughter because you thought I wouldn’t believe her?”

Celeste regained herself surprisingly quickly.

“You’re exaggerating.”

“I watched you terrorize an eight-year-old.”

“I was controlling a tantrum.”

“She wasn’t having a tantrum.”

“You weren’t here.”

That landed.

Daniel knew it.

Celeste saw that he knew it.

“You’re never here,” she continued. “You leave her with employees and relatives while you fly between resorts pretending business makes you a devoted father.”

Lily whispered, “Dad…”

Daniel put his arm around her.

Celeste stepped closer.

“You want to judge me? Look at yourself.”

Daniel stared at her for several seconds.

Then he spoke to Marcus.

“Save the recording in three places.”

Celeste’s eyes sharpened.

“Daniel.”

“Company server. External drive. Cloud archive.”

“You have no idea what you’re starting.”

“No. You started it.”

Celeste gave a strange smile.

It was not fear anymore.

It was almost relief.

“You really think this is about a dog bowl?”

Daniel felt something cold move through him.

“What does that mean?”

His phone buzzed.

An email notification.

He glanced down.

MERCER COASTAL RESORTS — EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING NOTICE.

Tomorrow.

Nine A.M.

Subject:

Petition for Temporary Removal of Daniel Mercer as Chief Executive Officer and Trustee Representative.

Daniel looked up.

Celeste was already walking toward the villa.

He called after her.

“What did you do?”

She stopped beneath the balcony camera.

Without turning around, she said quietly,

“I made sure that when everyone finally asks whether Lily is safe in this family, you won’t be the only person answering.”

Then she disappeared inside.

Daniel stared at the board notice.

The garden recording had exposed Celeste.

But somehow, she had expected a war.

May you like

And she had begun it before he ever came home.
