Chapter 8 - Elena’s First Bad Move

The endorsement letter leaked to the press.

Marcus denied leaking it.

No one believed him.

Headlines framed Elena as a grieving heiress trying to undo her grandfather’s succession plan after discovering her fiancé had cheated.

The truth became gossip.

Her bruised face became a photograph.

The vineyard became spectacle.

Then Elena made it worse.

She released a sixty-second excerpt from Lorenzo’s hidden recording to a business reporter.

Against Maya’s advice.

The clip showed Celeste instructing Lorenzo to say, “If Elena marries you, everything transfers.”

Elena wanted public pressure.

She got it.

For twelve hours.

Then Marcus’s lawyers released the earlier edited clip without the follow-up.

They argued Elena was selectively using a dying man’s private recordings to manipulate litigation.

Celeste appeared on television.

“My father changed his mind many times in his final months. Elena is grieving and being badly advised.”

Elena threw the remote at the sofa.

Maya stood in her living room.

“I told you not to litigate through the press.”

“They were winning the narrative.”

“This is court, not narrative.”

“Tell that to the stockholders.”

“Your grandfather’s estate isn’t a social-media poll.”

Elena turned away.

Maya continued.

“You also just alerted everyone to how much recorded evidence exists.”

Elena froze.

The archive.

She called Daniel.

No answer.

Then the security alarm sounded.

Someone had entered the old production office where disaster backups were stored.

By the time Daniel arrived, the intruder was gone.

Nothing obvious had been taken.

But the server cabinet stood open.

Elena felt sick.

Marcus had learned there were more recordings.

Because she told him publicly.

“My fault.”

Daniel did not disagree.

Police found no forced entry.

The person used an authorized estate credential.

Celeste’s.

She denied it.

Logs showed the credential was activated from a phone registered to her.

Maya sought an expanded preservation order.

The judge granted part of it and admonished every party:

“No one destroys evidence. No one moves records. And no one turns this case into entertainment.”

Elena sat through the reprimand.

She deserved it.

That afternoon the trust committee met.

Celeste used Elena’s public leak as evidence she was “destabilizing the family enterprise.”

She suspended Elena from her executive role in Valenti Estate Hospitality pending review.

Technically, Celeste had authority as trustee controlling current voting units.

Elena lost her office.

Her company email.

Her salary.

Her access to certain systems.

When security escorted her from the administration building, employees watched through glass doors.

Humiliation again.

But different from the cellar.

Marcus had used violence to make her feel powerless.

Celeste used governance.

Both worked.

Outside, Daniel approached.

“I’m sorry.”

“You have to stay.”

He looked surprised.

“Inside.”

“Elena—”

“I need someone who cares about this place still working there.”

Daniel nodded.

“You trust me?”

“I’m trying to learn how.”

That evening Ruth found the origin of Lorenzo’s endorsement letter.

Board minutes from the same date showed Lorenzo had appointed Marcus to a temporary restructuring advisory committee.

He had trusted Marcus once.

The hidden recording came later.

Marcus had not entered the family as a known enemy.

He had become one after being invited in.

Elena looked at the timeline.

“He impressed Grandfather.”

Ruth nodded.

“Marcus is intelligent.”

“That makes everything worse.”

“It usually does.”

Then Daniel called from the vineyard office.

“I found why someone opened the backup cabinet.”

“What’s missing?”

“Not files.”

“What then?”

“A hardware key.”

A small encrypted device used to access archived camera footage from Lorenzo’s private library.

Without it, certain older recordings could not be decrypted.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Celeste.”

“Maybe.”

Maya called minutes later with worse news.

The court had ordered an independent forensic examiner to collect the remaining archive.

When the examiner arrived tomorrow, one access device would be missing.

Marcus would argue Elena had lost control of evidence after leaking it.

Her credibility was now part of the case.

Power had reversed again.

Then Elena received a message from Sophia.

I know who took the hardware key.

A second message appeared.

It wasn’t Celeste.

Elena stared.

Who?

May you like

Sophia replied:

Daniel.
