Chapter 17 - Michael’s Last Map

Daniel came because Claire lied.

She told him Ruth had found a copy of the planting journal.

He arrived at Vale Ridge just before sunset.

Evelyn arrived fifteen minutes later.

Neither expected the other.

Claire had arranged the meeting in the old barrel hall with Brooks observing from a nearby office and deputies waiting outside under agreed legal protocols.

The board members were present because the emergency control vote was scheduled for the next morning.

Grant stood beside no one.

That seemed appropriate.

Claire placed Michael’s old vineyard map on the table.

Daniel’s eyes went directly to it.

Evelyn noticed.

Claire noticed him noticing.

“Where is the journal?” Claire asked.

Daniel said, “I don’t know what you mean.”

Claire projected the mausoleum security image onto the wall.

Daniel entering.

Daniel leaving with a leather book.

No one spoke.

Claire said, “You’ve spent fourteen years lying because you thought love excused betrayal.”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“Do not talk to me about Sarah.”

“I’m done protecting everyone’s preferred version of the dead.”

That hit Michael too.

Claire felt it.

She continued.

“My father concealed crimes to protect Vale Ridge. My mother concealed an affair because she was ashamed. Grant concealed theft because he feared losing everything. Ruth concealed information because she feared for her son. Evelyn concealed fraud because power matters more to her than people.”

Evelyn said coolly, “And what did you conceal?”

Claire looked at her.

“My suspicion.”

A flicker of surprise.

“I knew for years Grant manipulated me when it came to my father. I kept calling it marriage because admitting the truth would mean admitting I had chosen him.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

Claire continued.

“We all paid for silence.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Give me the journal.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand what Michael wrote.”

“Then show me.”

Daniel laughed.

“He blamed me for Sarah.”

“Did you deserve blame?”

“I loved her!”

Grant suddenly said, “You sound pathetic.”

Daniel turned on him.

“You targeted Claire before you met her.”

Grant absorbed it.

“Yes.”

“You married her for position.”

“At first, maybe.”

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

Grant forced himself to continue.

“Then I loved her and still kept lying. That makes it worse, not better.”

Daniel sneered.

“You think confession makes you noble?”

“No.”

Grant looked at Claire.

“I think it makes me late.”

The barrel hall went silent.

Claire returned to Daniel.

“The journal.”

Daniel’s hand moved toward his jacket.

Deputies shifted outside.

He slowly removed the leather book.

Claire took it.

The final pages contained planting notes.

Row Eleven.

Row Twelve.

Row Seventeen.

But the numbers beside them were not irrigation measurements.

They were account numbers.

One was underlined.

Claire handed the journal to Elaine.

Elaine compared it to Michael’s financial records.

“It’s an escrow account.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Claire saw it immediately.

“You know it.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Elaine checked the accompanying notation.

$11.6M.

Grant whispered, “What?”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“Michael moved money.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“Then what is it?”

Daniel answered.

“Falcon Crest reserve capital.”

Evelyn turned on him.

“Shut up.”

Everyone froze.

It was the first time Claire had ever heard Evelyn lose control.

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“There she is.”

Claire asked, “Why would Dad have access to Falcon Crest reserves?”

Daniel’s hands trembled.

“Because Sarah did.”

Claire’s heartbeat quickened.

“My mother?”

“Before she died, Sarah transferred copies of Evelyn’s internal records to Michael.”

“That doesn’t explain the money.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Tell her.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

Daniel laughed.

“You made me carry your secrets for fourteen years.”

“You were paid.”

“I lost Sarah.”

“You lost Sarah because Sarah finally understood you.”

Daniel flinched.

Claire almost pitied him.

Almost.

Daniel pointed at the journal.

“Evelyn parked investor reserves in an account nominally controlled by Falcon Crest but beneficially tied to Vale Ridge’s transaction structure. Michael discovered it last year.”

Claire looked at Elaine.

“Can that money offset the debt?”

“Potentially, if ownership can be established.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“That account is not Vale Ridge property.”

Claire said, “Then why steal the journal?”

Evelyn stopped.

The room became very quiet.

Claire finally saw the weak point.

Not murder.

Money.

Always money.

“You need that account hidden because if a court traces the funds, it proves Falcon Crest’s rescue financing was funded partly with money diverted from your own investors.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“And the whole debt structure collapses.”

Still nothing.

Grant stared at his mother.

“You weren’t protecting the twenty-two million.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“You were protecting yourself from the original fraud.”

Claire closed the journal.

“The board vote is over.”

A director asked, “What do you mean?”

“I mean Vale Ridge will seek immediate injunctive relief and submit this evidence to regulators.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You still need proof of ownership.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Then she looked at Daniel.

“That’s why he came.”

Daniel went pale.

Claire continued.

“Because Daniel drafted the escrow agreements.”

Every face turned toward him.

Daniel’s shoulders sagged.

For fourteen years, everyone had needed Daniel because Daniel knew where every signature lived.

Now that knowledge had become his prison.

Brooks entered the room.

“Mr. Price, we should talk.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“If I cooperate, Evelyn goes down.”

Claire said, “This isn’t about what happens to Evelyn.”

“What is it about?”

“My father.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“And Sarah?”

Claire stared at him.

“My mother stopped belonging to your story the day she told you no.”

Daniel finally looked away.

Then he whispered, “I’ll give you the agreements.”

Evelyn moved toward the door.

Two deputies blocked her path.

Her attorney immediately objected.

Brooks remained calm.

“Mrs. Mercer, we have a warrant.”

Grant closed his eyes.

Evelyn looked at her son.

“You did this.”

Grant met her gaze.

“No.”

He glanced at Claire.

May you like

“She did.”
