Chapter 11 - The Manufactured Father

The deepfake was imperfect.

Good enough for family.

Not good enough for forensic analysis.

Richard's face came from archival interviews.

His voice had been constructed from Hartwell promotional recordings.

The wedding photograph in the background exposed the timeline mistake.

Margaret's attorneys withdrew the video and blamed an “outside media consultant.”

The judge was not amused.

The trustee suspension hearing changed tone immediately.

Margaret's credibility collapsed.

But the court did not instantly hand control to Daniel.

Instead, the judge appointed a temporary independent fiduciary to oversee Hartwell trust votes until the validity of the amendment could be determined.

Margaret lost control.

Daniel did not gain it.

Both sides were furious.

Emma considered that a good sign.

Independent power was safer than family power.

Then her own crisis arrived.

The police asked her to come in voluntarily.

Margaret had formally accused her of unauthorized computer access, theft of proprietary records, and attempted corporate espionage.

Emma sat beside Laura in an interview room.

Detective Reed looked apologetic.

“I have to ask.”

“I understand.”

“Did you access Daniel's company laptop without permission?”

“No.”

“Richard's hidden files?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know they contained Hartwell records?”

“Not until I opened the safe.”

“Did you copy them?”

“I photographed some pages.”

“Before police involvement?”

“Yes.”

Laura shifted slightly.

Emma continued.

“I was afraid the originals would disappear.”

Reed asked, “Did you send any to the reporter?”

“No.”

“Lena Park?”

“Yes, after counsel told me what could be shared.”

“Before counsel?”

Emma hesitated.

One spreadsheet.

She had photographed it and sent it to Lena the night before the staircase.

Laura looked at her.

Emma felt sick.

“I sent one image.”

Reed wrote it down.

Not criminal necessarily.

But problematic.

That afternoon Hartwell's board obtained a temporary injunction limiting Emma's possession and dissemination of corporate records pending privilege review.

The press reported it as:

COURT RESTRICTS CEO'S WIFE IN CORPORATE THEFT DISPUTE.

Emma's consulting firm terminated her.

Daniel found her sitting on the hotel bathroom floor.

“They fired me.”

He knelt.

“I’m sorry.”

“My entire career is compliance.”

“You didn't steal.”

“I mishandled protected information.”

“To expose fraud.”

“Intent doesn't erase process.”

Daniel said nothing.

Emma began crying.

Not loudly.

That made it worse.

“I spent years building a reputation that I was careful.”

“You are careful.”

“No, Daniel. I was scared and angry and I made choices.”

He reached for her.

This time she let him hold her.

“I’m going to fix—”

She pulled away.

He stopped himself.

“Right.”

Emma almost smiled.

“No fixing.”

“No promises.”

“What then?”

“I’m staying.”

The words hurt more than promises.

She rested her head against his chest.

For the first time, they grieved instead of strategized.

The next day Richard's real video archives were examined.

Investigators found the source clips used to create the fake.

All were stored on a Hartwell media server accessible to Victor's firm.

Victor denied involvement.

Then Nicole Reyes produced an invoice from the media consultant.

Paid by Redbridge.

Approved by Lucas Bennett.

Daniel stared.

Lucas was no longer merely compromised.

He was actively participating.

Police obtained his communications.

One message from Margaret:

If Daniel sees the real trust drafts, remind him what happens to the lender certification.

Lucas replied:

He won't fight once Emma is gone.

Emma read it twice.

“Once Emma is gone.”

The staircase was part of the corporate strategy.

Not a spontaneous family fight.

Margaret needed Daniel isolated before the vote.

Police also recovered deleted messages between Margaret and Lucas from the morning of the shove.

Margaret:

She found Richard's safe.

Lucas:

Then get the drive.

Margaret:

She won't hand it over.

Lucas:

Make her leave. We can deal with Daniel afterward.

One hour later, Emma packed the gray suitcase.

Then came the most disturbing message.

Sent eleven minutes before Daniel arrived with groceries.

Margaret:

She's still refusing.

Lucas:

Then scare her.

Margaret:

How far?

Lucas:

Far enough that she stops.

Emma felt sick.

Daniel stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“I’m going to kill him.”

Emma grabbed his wrist.

“No.”

“He told her to—”

“No.”

Daniel's breathing became heavy.

“Don't become useful to them again.”

He looked at her.

She held his gaze.

“They need you angry.”

Slowly, Daniel sat.

Then Detective Reed scrolled to Lucas's next message.

Sent thirty seconds after the shove.

Before Daniel walked inside.

Lucas:

Is it done?

May you like

Margaret had responded with a single word.

Yes.
