Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Initials

Nathan asked to meet at Isabella’s studio.

Not the company headquarters.

Not the penthouse.

Her studio.

It occupied the top floor of a converted warehouse in Chelsea and smelled of wood samples, tracing paper, coffee, and the faint mineral dust of architectural models.

It was the one place Nathan had never fully controlled.

Isabella stood beside a model of a waterfront hotel when he entered.

She did not offer him coffee.

She did not ask whether he had slept.

“Why did you take my wedding ring?”

Nathan looked toward the windows.

“I found it.”

“Where?”

“In the bathroom.”

“Try again.”

His eyes returned to hers.

“We saw the video.”

The fight went out of him.

“I took it.”

“Nine days ago?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nathan rubbed a hand over his face.

“Because I was a coward.”

“That is a diagnosis, not an explanation.”

He almost smiled, then realized she was not joking.

“I had bought Evelyn’s ring.”

Isabella waited.

“I came home. You were asleep. Your hand was on my side of the bed, and your ring caught the light.”

His voice broke slightly.

“I couldn’t look at it.”

“So you stole it?”

“I took it off the bathroom counter the next morning.”

“And watched me search for it.”

“Yes.”

“Why put it in the safe?”

“I was going to return it.”

“To me?”

“I don’t know.”

She stared at him.

Nathan had always been decisive in public.

He could negotiate a two-hundred-million-dollar acquisition without raising his voice.

Yet in the destruction of his own marriage, he seemed to have drifted from one cowardly choice to the next.

“Why was your mother coming upstairs?”

Nathan sat.

“She believed you were going to block the Ashford transaction.”

“I didn’t even know the transaction existed.”

“She knew you would once you saw the board materials.”

“So her solution was to manufacture an incident suggesting I was unstable?”

“I told her not to.”

“But you didn’t stop her.”

“No.”

“Did you know about the champagne?”

“Not specifically.”

Isabella held his gaze.

“Did you know she intended to provoke me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know she was preparing custody allegations?”

Nathan’s silence returned.

Isabella turned away.

The city stretched beyond the studio glass.

“I want to meet Evelyn.”

His head snapped up.

“No.”

“That was fast.”

“She has nothing to do with this.”

“She is the woman you intended to marry after removing me from my own company and preparing a custody case against me.”

“I wasn’t removing you from the company.”

“The documents say otherwise.”

“The proxy was never signed.”

“And the engagement ring was never given. Yet you bought it.”

Nathan stood.

“Evelyn is not what you think.”

“What do I think?”

“That she planned this with my mother.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

“Then she can tell me.”

Nathan refused to give Isabella her number.

He did not need to.

At 4:17 that afternoon, Evelyn Ashford came to the studio on her own.

She was thirty-six, dark-haired, composed, wearing a charcoal suit without jewelry.

The first thing she said was, “I’m sorry.”

Isabella nearly told her to leave.

Instead she stepped aside.

Evelyn did not sit until invited.

“You know who I am.”

“Yes.”

“Nathan told me you discovered the ring.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“He never gave it to me.”

“That is supposed to make me feel better?”

“No.”

At least she had the sense not to pretend.

“How long?”

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“We started talking outside work in June. We slept together in July.”

Three months.

Nathan had told the truth about that part.

“What did he tell you about me?”

“That you had been living separately inside the marriage for almost a year.”

Isabella laughed.

“In July, he took me to Maine for our anniversary.”

Evelyn went pale.

“He said that was for Lily.”

“We spent two nights there alone.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Did you ask?”

“Yes.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

That answer, at least, was honest.

Evelyn opened her bag.

“I brought something.”

She placed her phone on the table and opened a chain of messages.

Nathan’s name appeared across the top.

Once Monday’s vote passes, Isabella will sign the separation.

Another:

She already understands the marriage is over. We’re only being careful with Lily.

Another, sent two weeks earlier:

I bought the ring. I’m not asking until this is finished cleanly.

Isabella stared.

“Cleanly.”

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

“That word sounds different now.”

“Why are you showing me this?”

“Because my father received a call from Celeste this morning asking Ashford Capital to accelerate the Monday vote.”

“And?”

“I told him not to.”

Isabella looked up.

Evelyn continued.

“Then I withdrew from the transaction team.”

“That doesn’t undo sleeping with my husband.”

“No.”

“You knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“You believed a convenient version of the marriage because it gave you permission to take what you wanted.”

Evelyn absorbed that.

“Yes.”

The lack of excuses was almost harder to hate.

“Why did Celeste want the financing so badly?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because Ashford wasn’t only buying debt.”

“What else?”

“Ashford would receive the right to purchase twenty-six percent of Vale Meridian if certain targets were missed.”

Nathan had not mentioned that.

“Whose shares?”

“Primarily Celeste’s family trust.”

Isabella stared.

“So Celeste would lose control.”

“Eventually, yes.”

“Then why support the deal?”

“Because the alternative may be worse.”

“What alternative?”

Evelyn took a breath.

“Default.”

The door opened behind them.

Nathan had returned.

He saw Evelyn.

His face hardened.

“I told you not to come here.”

Evelyn stood.

“You don’t get to tell me anything anymore.”

Nathan looked at Isabella.

“What did she tell you?”

“Enough to know you lied about the financing too.”

“It’s complicated.”

Isabella almost smiled.

“There’s that word again.”

Evelyn picked up her bag.

Before leaving, she stopped beside Isabella.

“One more thing. Nathan never told me about any custody strategy. But Celeste did ask me a question once.”

“What question?”

“She asked whether I would be comfortable raising Lily.”

Nathan whispered, “Evelyn.”

But Isabella heard only the blood rushing in her ears.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“And what did you say?”

“I told her Lily already has a mother.”

Evelyn looked toward Nathan.

“That was the moment I should have understood what kind of future they were planning.”

Then she left.

Isabella looked at her husband.

“You let your mother interview your mistress to replace me.”

Nathan’s eyes closed.

May you like

And Isabella knew there was no version of the marriage left to save.
