Chapter 7 - The Petition

Daniel wanted to destroy something.

Instead, he called Maya.

“That’s progress,” she said.

“My mother is trying to take my son.”

“She’s trying to frighten you.”

“It’s working.”

“Good. Fear makes you pay attention. Rage makes you punch neighbors.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What do we do?”

“We answer with evidence.”

The emergency guardianship hearing was scheduled for Thursday.

Evelyn arrived in court wearing navy blue and carrying no visible emotion.

Daniel sat beside Maya.

Owen sat behind them.

Evelyn noticed.

Her mouth tightened.

Her lawyer began with Daniel’s violence.

“He struck Mr. Reed repeatedly in the presence of his child.”

Maya rose.

“After being falsely told by petitioner that Mr. Reed had pushed the child into the river.”

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Falsely?”

Maya submitted the dock recording under seal.

The courtroom watched.

No one spoke while Evelyn approached Caleb.

No one moved when the net came down.

When Caleb hit the water, the judge’s face changed.

Evelyn looked straight ahead.

Her attorney whispered to her.

Then came Owen’s rescue.

Then Evelyn pointing at him.

Then Daniel’s punches.

The judge stopped the video.

“Mrs. Mercer.”

Evelyn’s attorney stood.

“My client maintains that the recording lacks context.”

The judge stared at him.

“Counsel, I just watched your client place a net over a seven-year-old child and propel him off a dock.”

“She did not intend—”

“I did not ask for argument.”

The guardianship petition was denied.

But Daniel did not walk away untouched.

The judge turned to him.

“Mr. Mercer, your response to fear was also unacceptable.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“You assaulted the person who rescued your son.”

“Yes.”

“I am ordering temporary family counseling and directing that Ms. Melissa Grant remain an approved support person during the current investigation. That is not a transfer of custody. It is a protective measure.”

Daniel nodded.

Outside court, reporters swarmed.

Evelyn paused on the steps.

Daniel approached despite Maya’s look.

He kept his hands at his sides.

“You lost.”

Evelyn’s face remained composed.

“No, Daniel. I showed the court what you are.”

“You showed them what you did.”

“Did I?”

“The video is clear.”

“Videos show moments.”

“You pushed him.”

Her eyes hardened.

“And you still don’t understand why.”

Daniel went still.

“Then tell me.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Ask your dead wife.”

She walked away.

That afternoon Priya broke the encryption on Rachel’s flash drive.

The password was Caleb’s birthday combined with the number of the hospital room where Rachel had received her first chemotherapy infusion.

Daniel had known both.

The first folder contained invoices.

The second contained bank statements.

The third was labeled ARTHUR.

Inside were photographs of pages from a red leather ledger.

Daniel stared at the screen.

The entries went back eleven years.

Cash payments.

Political consulting.

Permit acceleration.

Subcontractor rebates.

Initials.

A.M.

E.M.

M.V.

Arthur Mercer.

Evelyn Mercer.

Martin Vale.

Daniel whispered, “My father was paying bribes.”

Owen stood behind Priya.

“Looks that way.”

“For permits?”

“Some.”

Priya pointed.

“Others appear to be kickbacks from subcontractors.”

Daniel scrolled.

Then he saw Rachel’s name.

R.M. — FOUNDATION DISCOVERED DUPLICATE HARBOR GRANTS. CONTAINMENT REQUIRED.

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“Containment?”

Owen said, “Rachel found the duplicate billing.”

“What did they do to her?”

Priya opened the next folder.

It contained audio recordings.

Rachel’s voice filled the room.

“September seventh. Evelyn told me the foundation discrepancies were bookkeeping errors. Martin told me to stop asking about Blue Marsh. Daniel thinks I’m overreacting.”

Daniel sat down.

Rachel continued.

“I hate hiding this from him.”

Her voice trembled.

“But every time I say Evelyn is lying, he tells me his mother saved the company after Arthur’s first heart attack.”

Daniel remembered those conversations.

Every one.

Rachel’s recording continued.

“If I’m right, they’re using Arthur’s old scheme to move money again.”

Then came the sentence that silenced everyone.

“And I think some of Caleb’s trust documents have already been altered.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Rachel had known.

Two years ago.

She had tried to warn him.

The next recording was dated five weeks later.

Rachel sounded frightened.

“I found the Sloan amendment draft.”

Paper rustled.

“If they file this after Arthur dies, Richard becomes trustee. Evelyn can borrow against Caleb’s share.”

A door opened in the background.

Rachel whispered, “Someone’s here.”

The recording stopped.

Priya looked at Daniel.

“There’s one more file.”

She clicked.

It was a photograph of a handwritten note.

Arthur’s writing.

RED LEDGER — ORIGINAL MUST NEVER LEAVE BLACKWATER UNTIL DANIEL KNOWS THE TRUTH.

Underneath:

IF RACHEL FINDS THIS FIRST, TRUST HER.

Daniel stared.

His father had trusted Rachel with the truth.

And still had not trusted his own son enough to tell him directly.

Then Priya enlarged the bottom of the photograph.

A final line appeared.

EVELYN WILL PROTECT THE COMPANY AT ANY COST.
