Chapter 10 - The First Reversal

The recording ended before Madeline answered.

Three minutes and twelve seconds.

The crucial conversation occupied less than forty seconds.

Claire: You need to tell Daniel what you and Aaron have done.

Madeline: Not tonight.

Claire: There may not be another night for me.

Madeline: You don’t understand what you think you understand.

Claire: Then explain Graycap.

Silence.

Claire: Explain Santa Fe.

Madeline: Claire—

Claire: Does Daniel know you’re sleeping with Aaron?

Then the file cut.

Not naturally.

Abruptly.

Digital forensics confirmed someone had edited the recording.

The final segment was missing.

Daniel spent the next day imagining it.

Had Madeline confessed?

Threatened Claire?

Begged her?

Had Claire named other evidence?

The missing minutes became an obsession.

Elena eventually took the recorder away from him.

“You’re trying to recover truth by staring at absence.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That sounds like something Claire would say.”

“She hired me for a reason.”

The first major court hearing occurred the following morning.

Madeline entered with Grant Hollis.

A faint yellow bruise remained on her cheek.

She wore no makeup over it.

Strategic.

Daniel knew it.

He also knew he had caused it.

He could not erase that fact simply because her crimes were worse.

Hollis emphasized it immediately.

“Mr. Mercer admits striking my client after he had already disarmed her.”

Daniel’s attorney, Priya Desai, responded.

“He acted while protecting two children after witnessing physical abuse.”

The judge listened.

Then Madeline testified.

Her voice shook in carefully measured places.

She admitted using the cord.

The admission surprised Daniel.

Hollis had chosen a different strategy.

“I lost control,” Madeline said.

“Why?” her attorney asked.

“I had spent months caring for children with escalating behavioral issues largely alone.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Madeline looked toward him briefly.

“Daniel was rarely home.”

True.

She continued.

“I made an unforgivable mistake. I accept that.”

A woman admitting wrongdoing could sound more credible than one denying everything.

“I struck Sophie four times. I am ashamed.”

Sophie’s correction from the first night.

Four.

Madeline had listened.

Adapted.

Hollis asked about the recordings.

Madeline’s eyes filled.

“Aaron Pike pressured me regarding Daniel’s company. I was frightened of him.”

Daniel leaned forward.

There it was.

The split.

Madeline was abandoning Aaron.

“He said Daniel had become unstable since Claire’s death,” Madeline continued. “He encouraged me to document arguments.”

“Did he tell you to harm the children?”

“No.”

“Did you plan to harm the children in order to influence corporate control?”

“No.”

“Did you abuse them?”

Madeline hesitated.

“I used punishments I deeply regret.”

Priya whispered, “She’s trying to get ahead of the evidence.”

Madeline then produced her own recordings of Daniel.

On one, Daniel shouted:

“You don’t get to tell me what happens in my house!”

Another:

“If you bring Rebecca into this again, I swear to God—”

The clip ended.

No continuation.

No context.

Another captured glass breaking.

Daniel remembered that night.

He had thrown a wineglass into an empty sink after Madeline told him Claire’s family only wanted his money.

He hated how the sound made him appear.

The judge did too.

At the end of the hearing, the temporary order protecting Madeline from Daniel remained.

However, the court also issued a separate temporary order prohibiting Madeline from contacting Sophie and Ethan pending investigation.

Daniel should have felt relieved.

Then came the reversal.

Because of mutual allegations of violence and the children’s exposure to the conflict, the judge ordered a temporary independent custody evaluation.

Daniel retained physical custody for now.

But no unsupervised travel.

No removing the children from Colorado.

And, most damagingly, the written order stated:

The Court finds sufficient preliminary evidence of domestic violence by Daniel Mercer to warrant continued protective restrictions pending final hearing.

Section Nine.

Elena read the sentence in the courthouse hallway and went pale.

“The bank will act.”

They did.

Two hours later Summit National suspended Daniel’s authority over Claire’s trust shares.

Aaron called an emergency board meeting immediately.

By evening Halcyon Energy submitted a formal acquisition proposal.

$342 million.

High enough to trigger mandatory consideration under Claire’s trust.

Daniel sat in Priya’s office staring at the offer.

Madeline had lost access to the children.

But Aaron had gained exactly what he needed.

Daniel’s mistake—the slap—had become the mechanism.

Priya said quietly, “You need to prepare for the possibility the company is sold.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I built it with Claire.”

“I know.”

“My children own part of it because she wanted them to.”

“I know.”

“And Aaron is stealing it using a court order created from something I did.”

Priya held his gaze.

“Yes.”

Daniel pressed both palms against his eyes.

For the first time since the chalet, he understood something terrifying.

Stopping Madeline would not undo what had already begun.

And rescuing his children might cost him everything else Claire left behind.
