Chapter 3 - Amelia’s Wooden Box

Amelia’s wooden box sat on a shelf in Lily’s bedroom.

Dark cherrywood.

Brass hinges.

A small silver keyhole.

Daniel had not opened it since his wife’s death.

Amelia Mercer had died from a cerebral aneurysm four years earlier, leaving behind a seven-year marriage, a three-year-old daughter, and a collection of letters she intended Lily to read when she was older.

Daniel could not bear to go through them.

So he locked the box.

And avoided it.

Vanessa knew that.

Maria accompanied Detective Walsh into Lily’s bedroom while Daniel waited downstairs with DCF.

The investigators photographed everything before touching anything.

The box was unlocked.

Daniel frowned.

“It shouldn’t be.”

“Who has the key?” Walsh asked.

“I did.”

“Where?”

“In my study safe.”

The safe showed no forced entry.

Daniel entered the code.

The key was gone.

His throat tightened.

Inside Amelia’s box were family photographs, handwritten letters, jewelry, and estate documents.

One envelope was missing.

Daniel knew because Amelia had labeled every packet.

FOR LILY — TRUST / PROPERTY

Only an empty space remained.

Daniel called Elliot.

No answer.

He called again.

Straight to voicemail.

Maria stood near the bedroom doorway.

“There was a red folder.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“Mrs. Mercer had it last month.”

“Vanessa?”

Maria nodded.

“I was cleaning the upstairs office. She told me to leave.”

“Did you see what was inside?”

“No.”

“Did you see Elliot?”

Maria hesitated.

“Yes.”

Daniel stared.

“In my house?”

“Three times.”

“When?”

“When you were traveling.”

Daniel felt anger rise.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Maria looked at him with exhausted disbelief.

“Sir, I tried to tell you many things.”

That stopped him.

She continued.

“You always asked me to speak to Mrs. Mercer.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Detective Walsh said, “Mr. Mercer, yelling at witnesses won’t help.”

“I’m not yelling.”

“You’re close.”

He exhaled.

“You’re right.”

Maria’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

Daniel asked more quietly, “Did Elliot and Vanessa seem…”

He could not finish.

Maria understood.

“I never saw them kissing.”

“Did they go upstairs together?”

“They went to the office.”

“Late?”

“Sometimes.”

“How late?”

“After ten.”

Daniel’s marriage shifted beneath him.

He had known Vanessa for five years.

Married for four.

Elliot had introduced them at a charity dinner.

Daniel suddenly remembered the moment.

You two would get along. You both hate pointless conversation.

At the time, Vanessa had smiled as if Elliot were almost a stranger.

Had that been a lie?

That afternoon, Mercer Family Holdings froze access to several private accounts at Daniel’s request.

Elliot finally called.

“What the hell is happening?”

“You tell me.”

“Daniel?”

“You were at my house while I was away.”

Silence.

Then Elliot sighed.

“Vanessa asked me to review estate paperwork.”

“Why?”

“She had questions.”

“She has lawyers.”

“She trusted me.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Apparently everyone trusted you.”

“Don’t do this.”

“Did you open Amelia’s box?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you discuss Lily’s trust?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

“Vanessa asked what would happen if something happened to you.”

“What?”

“Estate planning.”

“My daughter was locked inside a dryer last night.”

Elliot went silent.

Daniel continued.

“Maria recorded Vanessa talking to you while she held the door shut.”

Another pause.

“She was talking to me?”

“You tell me.”

“I called her about signatures.”

“What signatures?”

“Daniel, this is not a conversation we should have over the phone.”

“You’re right.”

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You can explain it to the police.”

Elliot hung up.

An hour later, Daniel’s corporate counsel called.

“Daniel, we have a problem.”

“Join the club.”

“This one concerns Mercer Urban Development.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What happened?”

“Our auditors found irregular payments.”

“To whom?”

“A consultancy called Northstar Civic Strategies.”

Daniel knew the name.

Northstar handled permitting and local-government research for large development projects.

“How much?”

“Approximately six-point-two million over eighteen months.”

Daniel stood.

“That’s impossible.”

“The approvals were routed through the family office.”

“Elliot.”

“Yes.”

“Freeze everything.”

“Already done.”

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

Vanessa.

Elliot.

Lily’s trust.

Missing documents.

Six million dollars.

Separate problems were beginning to touch.

That evening, Rebecca called.

“Lily remembered where she put something.”

Daniel immediately drove to Rebecca’s house, where his visit remained supervised.

Lily sat on the living-room rug holding a stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy.”

He sat several feet away.

Rebecca remained nearby.

“What did you find, sweetheart?”

Lily reached into the rabbit’s torn seam.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I took it.”

Daniel stared.

“From Vanessa?”

“From the red folder.”

Rebecca put on disposable gloves and unfolded it.

A photocopied page.

At the top:

MERCER LEGACY TRUST

Below it:

Current Beneficiary: Lily Amelia Mercer

Then several handwritten notes.

Successor control must change before D signs.

R.H. cannot remain backup.

Rebecca looked up.

“R.H.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Rebecca Hale.”

Her eyes widened.

“Me?”

“You’re successor trustee if I die or become incapacitated.”

The room became silent.

At the bottom of the page was another note.

11.8 — inaccessible directly. Control surrounding assets instead.

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Did Vanessa know you took this?”

Lily nodded.

“She kept asking where I put it.”

“And you wouldn’t tell her?”

Lily shook her head.

Daniel felt something inside him collapse.

The dryer.

The pantry.

The threats.

They were abuse.

But some of them had also been interrogation.

Vanessa had been trying to recover evidence from a seven-year-old child.

And whatever she and Elliot were planning, they knew they could not simply steal Lily’s trust.

So they intended to control everything around it.
